It doesn't appear that the Spratley Islands bases are intended to be fortresses. I believe Kamome is right on the money in calling them intelligence nodes. If the USN or any allied navy intends to perform combat operations anywhere near these unsinkable information gathering installations, they had better open with a time-on-target strike on all of the radomes. To ignore them would be inviting a rain of the PLA's large, ballistic missiles targeted on your task force.

The goal isn't to make the forts impregnable. The goal is to detect a threat first so there can be faster backup once shit hits the fan. The counter to that is to either hit fast and hard (a full on invasion basically). Or knock out the systems, which also needs a hard and fast (yet stealthy) approach.

Problem with those islands is that they are high value, high payoff targets with practically no ability to defend themselves against the US Navy and Marine Corps. They will be the first things to get hit in any war, and they will have no hope of maintaining their operations. And then they'll get invaded and taken.

Why fight on your territory when you can make your enemy fight for some useless land ? Let him spend men and resources trying to take a few worthless islands whilst you can prepare a counter attack to attack his core ....remember Iwo Jima ? 50 thousand Americans died trying to take basically a volcanic lump of rock whilst Japan made preparation to defend Okinawa , after Okinawa , America realised that it was going to cost a lot of men and materials to take the Japanese mainland that's why they used the first nukes ....China plans to do the same ....to be able to attack China unmolested those islands need to be taken by conventional means , America cannot use nukes on them as then China can claim the USA used nukes first and retaliate with nukes ala their no first use policy ...America cannot take those islands by just aircraft alone , i.e bombing because of the extensive radar and anti aircraft network that has been set up there ...therefore boots on the ground is the only answer so whilst a battle rages for those islands , China has time to prepare a more robust response to America's core forces which would be exposed once the attack on those islands have been initiated ...

I doubt the USMC would use Boots on the ground to take those islands. The big weakness is that the location of the radars are fixed and known. They would face a barage of BM, cruise missiles, glide bombs and loitering munitions. China would have used a lots of assets to build them with no real purpose.

When the shit hits the fan China are prepared with more SAM and patrolling fighter squadrons and deployed naval assets with air defence. War do not start over a day, that is somthing that are being built up, the day China start deploying fighter squadrons, AWACS and SAM on this islands are the day you should take cover.

A primary defense for SAM sites is to be able to knock down quickly and move elsewhere, otherwise they risk getting struck by SEAD sorties. These islands have nowhere else to set up at, and once cut off from reliable resupply of missiles to shoot the entire place becomes vulnerable to even simple carpet bombing with cluster munitions.

These “grabbed” islands developed into fortresses will soon be “recovered” by Admiral Nature!

As China is one of the biggest trading countries on earth, it also knows that trade lines are its biggest weakness because they could be subjected to disruption by foreign powers. That’s why US strategists like Mahan theorized the control of the sea doctrine, recognizing how SLOC are essential to a country economic well-being. China knows that and it’s trying to build up its blue water fleet for this reason too among others

In my experience, the majority of the Japanese people I talked with are not really interested in studying and understanding this issue and just want to not think about it altogether. They are essentially the same claims but not identical, so technically you can't say Taiwan uses the 9-dash claim.

Taiwan had an 11-dash line soon after the WWII, It was the US navy that helped send Taiwanese--or Republic of China troops to reclaim the Spratleys from the Japanese forces. People's Republic of China inherited the 11-dash line from ROC.

Those radars were set up to such scale that, once some massive attack is detected, a full retaliation against US bases and fleets will be triggered. That's why they don't even put a big fleet to guard those islands.

Those artificial islands are sitting ducks. They more outposts than fortresses. The only purpose they would serve is as a base of operations for offensive strikes. They don’t seem to be organized for that. How easy or difficult would it be to isolate or bypass them. How long would they be able to operate without resupply?

These fragile man made islands will not survive under heavy bombing. During the Vietnam war, after each B52 bombing run, hundreds of bomb craters, 10 ft in diameters, 6 ft deep were left on the ground.

Vietnam was the first country to start seizing and occupying islands in the South China Seas in the late 1970’s. These islands are very small and less than 100 acres. Vietnam has 27 islands, the Philippines 7, China 7, Malaysia 5 and Taiwan 1 island. It’s all about the fishing and oil resources, that’s why these are spending money to maintain a presence there.

What would be the chances of so called stealth ships ?

What was discussed here is really nothing different from an other air and ground defense system for any other countries. In terms of equipment, what's mentioned here are pretty standard around the world. Also mounting a radar 30/40 feet above the ground is not going to increase radar detection significantly. Over the horizonal radar detection is not a new technology. Detection range of 430 km is pretty standard for most VHF radar system. Overlaying radar coverage and info from multi sensors is practiced around the world.

Thank you so much for the comment Jack! IMO there a substantial difference with what has been done in other countries. The Seven outposts in the Spratly all have these different radars capabilities creating a multilayered, redundant detection system. The PLAN is not installing any groundbreaking technology on these islets, but they have installed plenty of these systems. As they say there’s a certain quality in quantity. The fact of building that network of radar, of various type and on different platforms (land, sea and air) on seven different islets is something different than from an “other air and ground defense system”. Looking forward to read your reply!

@@Kamome163 The 7 outposts with overlapping multilayered detection system is probably just a function of what is done to create the necessary air defense capability for this particular geographical need. In other outposts like Guam or Diego Garcia, the needs will be different and hence, different system structure will be put in place. In some of the other islands in SCS where countries like Vietnam, Philippines can stake claims and built outposts, these countries would probably have invested in such air defense system if budget permits. Any "dramatization" of what China did in SCS (my apologies if I this was not the case) is not helpful in securing peace and balance of power in the region, especially when the US has a disproportionate military presence in the area.

My lacking of not being clear enough. I'll remember that for the next videos! My goal here is to provide a neutral analysis of what is the situation. I'm not taking, nor want to, any side or preference when discussing these issues in my videos. As you mentioned the US has built extensive detection capabilities on DG and Guam just to name a few. I suppose the building of the THAAD is an even thornier issue. So it's not really about right or wrong is really about taking a different perspective on this kind of issue. For the US is crucial to dampen China's maritime clout and influence in the region, and for China is essential to secure its coastal areas by creating a buffer region. IMO this is why what is going on in the Spratly is quite relevant. Is not just the construction of an air defence system, which by what I could read in terms of firepower is much less compared to what a single type-055 carries (www.jhuapl.edu/Content/documents/IntroductiontoSCSMILCAPStudies.pdf). Instead, it has to do with the control of this body of water (Southern SCS) which is becoming more and more like China's backyard. Like what the Caribbean is for the US. If Chinese ships were to suddenly start doing calls and exercises off of Florida's coast, I guess the US wouldn't be too happy about it. As you can see from my text wall (Sorry about that), talking about all the factors at play will inevitably bring in more dynamics and facts, and my videos would be at least one hour long. I agree with you, it is important to not foment hatred nor tensions. That's why I want to provide fact-based analysis, from different perspectives, on these issues.

However the title "China's Informationized WARFARE Strategy in the South China Sea" has pretty much portray China as the aggressor even though it's operating in its own backyard. Am sure if USA does something similar on either the East or West coast, it'll be known as DEFENSE strategy rather than Warfare Strategy. Looking at the comments section, one can also find more pro US and anti China remarks too. Perhaps a better way to paint a more neutral/balance picture is to include information of US military assets too (South Korea, Japan, Hawaii, Australia and of course US carrier battle groups) so viewers can see and decide if military development in the SCS is one-sided or a respond to possible military threat.

All those radars and electronics work great (supposedly) until the first pulse weapon goes off. And they don’t have to be nuclear either. Or the submarine or air launched anti-radiation missiles and/or cruise missiles slam into the radar domes. And we have lots of them.

I can see a problem with that. While China's ability to use radar would be taken out, so would ours. It might be more important for the US to keep track of what the Chinese are doing than wrecking their ability. Just explosives would work fine. I would guess that control of satellites that can do the same thing would be necessary, if they work there.
