"Even the really smart people who study this stuff can't explain why that is" I'm a planetary geologist who studies the Moon, and I (and all my colleagues) can explain why the near side has the dark splotches (called "maria" or "seas" in Latin) and the far side does not. The structure of the Moon is broken into 2 main layers: anorthositic crust and a gabbroic mantle. The anorthositic crust is that gray/white stuff you see at the surface and it has more calcium and aluminum. The gabbroic mantle is a subsurface layer made up of more iron and magnesium. The maria are from large impact craters that occurred 3.5 to 4 billion years ago. The impacts were so deep that they exposed the mantle, melted it, and then recrystallized it as a black igneous rock called basalt. So, why are maria only on the near side? The far side has a thicker crust, so, the large asteroid impacts did not reach the gabbroic mantle. Why does the far side have a thicker crust? The Moon formed while the Earth was still a ball of magma, and the heat from the Earth would have caused the calcium and aluminum on the Moon to gravitate towards the far side since it would have been "cooler". What will Chang'e 6 find on the far side? Potentially, the oldest samples on the Moon since that is mostly the pristine crust.

Phrase: "the moon is a Bow" originates with tibetans. Not a bow in the cresent shaped sense, but rather the moon is a bow in the "fires arrows" sense. It suggests they observed asteroid or comet passing through a keyhole on the far side of the moon that throws things at earth.

They didn't contribute anything. Only Germany did from stolen technology from ww2. Everything pretty much used to get to space is German technology stolen under operation paperclip. It's like saying China should be proud to have finally landed on the moon when most of the technology was either given or stolen from other countries because they are a slave race they wanted them to produce something for them. Russia has been to Venus, moon,Mars and Mercury their capsuls and lander might not have lasted long but it's an achievement not many can say they could do besides United States. But no matter the congrats are all thanks to Germany and the stolen technology from ww2.

Looking at the faces of the scientists and engineers in the Chinese space control centre, their space program will advance rapidly and achieving unimaginable. Why? At least 80% of their scientists are in their 30s and thousands more in their 20s are pursuing their advance degree in various space engineering studies. To top it up, the government is providing generous funding and other supports to ensure their space program will continue as planned.

@@michubern1444 Mars Sample Return is indefinetely delayed, and was already scheduled behind China's dates, however fiscal analysis are ongoing on the mission and may result in the whole cancellation of the program by fall of this year. Tianwen-3 will be the first, and maybe only for sometimes, Sample returner mission. China's plans are very interesting, they develop the require experience with the planet that interest them, create all the logistic and production chain needed, map the surface with orbiters and analyse the surface in details, return samples, primarily to acquire the return flight experience, then move on to the next phase until they feel confident enough so that they can sent peoples to the designed site, they did the same thing with their space station with Tiangong 1 and 2, but Tianwen in their case seem to be more based on basic experience on surface activity before any plans are made, there are planned mission of an yet unknow / undisclosed nature in 2033, 2035, 2037, and 2041, i suspect this would be a plan similar to chang'e but with nuclear spacecraft, launched by Long March 9, that would be why they're trying to make some experience now with regular probe until their technology can make significant progress to move on to thoses more complex missions, to my understanding, the 2033, 2035, 2037 missions will all be robots, equipped with ai, to test the martian landing phase, send the rovers to explore the surface, bring back samples more quickly than with Tianwen-3 and in bigger amounts, and finally explore the sites with more ressources that they could be interested in to land with humans, then by 2041, the human mission would be launched to land peoples on mars for the first time and build their base there. The same deal with the Tianwen-2 spacecraft to bring back samples from sateroid, i really think we're about to see announcement of a new plan consisting of autonomous spacecraft that gonna go study asteroid and try different manoeuver around them to create the means to change the trajectory of asteroid and study what they can do with thoses possibilities, maybe mining them, maybe deviating them from a collision with earth trajectory.... There's also a Tianwen-4 mssion that focus on studies of the Jovian system (which seem logical as a next step), as well as a fly by of Uranus to then go outside the solar system, all of this is to acquire the necessary capabilities to go further and make more complex plans. I don't know yet if they'll end up making other plans with others planets and moons, but this is already quite the composed and pragmatic pace to go explore space, no race against another nation, no waste of time, capabilities, money and ressources, just the most sraightforward approach to an unknow domain where the USSR and the USA barely scratched the surface. So long as they keep on going i'm gonna be way more interested in them than in NASA, because i mean, Curiosity and Opportunity missions to mars were amazing and all, but then NASA became obsessed with the moon when it became clear that a race could be played, they're not doing anything of the experience they acquired thoses last few decade with mars, and they might throw everything away for good if they cancel MSR, by chosing their dead end Artemis program instead, so when an agency that gave up the moon for 52 years, and lost all the experience of it to the point that they can't figure out the most basic capabilities anymore to land there properly, I'm thinking that maybe they're not really that serious about space to begin with...

If I had to guess, I'd say that the visible side of the moon being closer than the farther side has had tidal forces (causing vulcanism) acting on it from an earlier time when the moon was closer than it is now. But then what do I know, I am just a plumber.

Nice seeing you guys. As for the lander... Given that there is solar power on the moon, they should send a drilling machine that just keeps drilling indefinitely. Why stop at 2 meters, when you can go 200? Underground bases should make more sense than above ground bases.

Thank you for using the phrase “far side”. Other media still using the annoying phrase “dark side” Art Toy, Lawrence, Michigan.

At last we saw the whole team behind the scene! Greetings from Russia and especially to Sean! I Really REALLY appreciate your weighted, balanced, neutral and respectful position to the USSR/Russia's space programs and achievements.

The Ascender blasted off into lunar orbit with soil samples already. The rover is most likely used for that awesome picture you showed of the lander.
