I also lived on refried beans when I was young and struggling. I learned how to make flour tortillas for next-to-nothing and could get a bag of beans for less than a buck. I ate better than all of my friends.

Beans & wheat, rice or corn eaten together makes complete protein from the amino acids of the combined foods. You’re getting a healthier protein at a fraction of the price of meat. Peanut butter & whole wheat also provides complete protein.

This bean dip is amazing. I love it, my girlfriend loves it, our imaginary dog loves it. We've made it twice since this video came out and we binge ate it both times. We made a little compromise in our cheese choice: we only went with cheddar since we're on a budget - and the heat level was fine for us without the jalapeños. (Also skipped the cilantro since i hate the taste of soap in my food) Fantastic recipe, Chef John. Thanks

This is amazing warm, cook on the stove top till it’s hot with all ingredients except the green onions and cilantro which you mix in once ready to serve. This cold per Chef John works excellent if you want to elevate your layered dips.

Just made this for a Super Bowl party and it is really good. Best bean dip ever. Another home run for Chef John.

I’d forgotten about the seven layer bean dip. It was a big hit in the 80’s.

7 Layer Dip is still around, here in central Illinois!

Made this for the Super Bowl game today. I had to adjust everything down just a little because the refried beans here on Vancouver Island are only 14 ounces. Love the dip! I don’t share your addiction to Cayenne so didn’t add any. Thanks, John.

I've been making a dip very similar to this for decades but I bake it. I also use butter instead of oil.

As we had an open campus in high school, meaning we could leave campus for lunch, it wasn’t uncommon too see more than one person go too the grocery store across the the street and buy a bag of the taco flavored Doritos , a can of bean dip , and the soda of their choice 😂

The scattering on top definitely improving the look. Looks like mashed raw chicken liver but I am sure it tastes fabulous. Going to try this

As delightful as you might think this is cold, it's FAR better if you heat it, which melts the cheese (add more than in the recipe). Also, a tiny (tiny!) amount of liquid smoke really makes a huge difference.

Just made this. I think I did well following your recipe… but the consistency is more fluid, and yours looks more thick. I think it’s because the refried bean I got looked to be surrounded in oil or something… I’m still going to bring it to the Super Bowl party!! Hopefully people still like it 😂

Sounds like you may have used pinto beans instead of refried beans.

prior, your grated cheese has always been curly. asking bc (nk) I've long admired/coveted the cutey cheese curls. (seriously, I'm totally not kidding. what grater did you used to use to get the curly cheese? asking bc I like cute food - and curly cheese is much cuter than straight.) trader joe's sells pasta that's basically bucatini curled like a telephone cord ... which I love bc it's adorable.

My cheese is curly because I use the grating disc on my food processor. It’s so much faster too.

I do something similar to this, but I prepare and serve it hot, which I feel is better both texture and flavor-wise. also, black beans for tastier results!

As the inventor of the 7 layer dip, I'd just like to say that you can't possibly know if your dip is better. A year after I gave away the recipe, there were 230,000 locations on the web where you could find Someone Else's versions. I have yet to see my version anywhere. BTW, it was invented as a way to keep your chips crisp while consuming beef nachos, if your looking for a clue to how to make the original recipe.

I don't even know what song you're talking about but I recognized the brand just from the small shot of the back of the can we got. My family prefers the kind with jalapenos in it, I wonder how that would work with this dip.
