CHICKEN CHALLENGE | PIT BARREL COOKER v. WEBER 26 | BEER CAN CHICKEN

#bbcharcoal #pitbarrelcooker #bbqit
Today is the first-ever Chicken Challenge on BBQ iT! To start it off, I thought a beer-can-chicken on the Weber 26 versus the PBC would be an awesome test. It was. The Pit Barrel Cookers have been around for almost a decade now, and its popularity is growing. I simply love the product made by Noah Glanville and his wife. It's a family run business with a great story, so check out the link below!
The Weber 26 is also one of my favorite cookers! So this is a battle of 2 of the most versatile cookers I own.
THE COOK:
On the Weber, basically, start with both vents wide open.
Char logs, (or whatever coals you have) are set to one side, ala "offset" style. Dump a half chimney of coals on one side of Weber and allow to come up to temp. Once 325 F. or 162 C., you're ready to add the wood for smoke flavor. In this case, I'm using Pecan chunks, and Apple chips.
On the PIT BARREL COOKER
start with a basket full of coals, but leave about a 1/5th of space for the hot coals that start the cooker. Once you dump a 1/2 basket or so, drop the PBC basket in. Start with both rods in place, and the bottom vent fully open. You'll cut this back once it's up to temp.
When you hit approx. 300-325 F. or 149-162 C. you're ready to add the wood of choice! Again, the B&B Pecan is amazing, and he B&B Apple adds such a sweet touch!
Cook both birds until they hit 160-165 F or 71-74 C. and let them rest for 20-25 minutes.
DO NOT SKIP THE RESTING PART!!!! TRUST ME!!!
A huge thanks to my homie JJ for coming in and shooting this week!! He's an awesome DP, and homie! Love yo brotha!

Craig, I have the junior version of the Pit Barrel for two persons it’s just right. 1- Did you have a lot of coals left after doing the chicken? 2- I only use lump coal so there are no chemicals. I spoke to the folks at PBC and they said that lump tends to burn hot vs brickets. Mine ran hot (Royal Oak) much like yours and I was expecting it to be dry. This was a RibEye roast and it was perfect. Next I have try the rubs you used. Good video. I have smoke picanha steaks steaks twice both were amazing with only Salt, Pepper and Garlic powder. Oh I learned something new about smoking and oil thanks. Kevin

I think you'd get the same effect by letting the Weber 26" chicken cook OVER the coals and not on the side away from the coals. The intense flavor comes from juice dripping on the burning coals and smoking the meat more intensely. That is my take and I have both cookers. Plus the Pit Barrel runs hotter in the beginning of the cook which ads another variable not spoken for here. But good vid, I'd eat both of them!
