You have now witnessed one of the greatest live guitar solos. Terry Kath was one of the best guitarists in the world. Sadly, he was taken from us way too soon as a result of an accidental shooting. I was fortunate to have seen Chicago at Fillmore East about 3 weeks before this concert. Terry was on fire that night too. 🎸🔥

I love seeing it slowly dawn on people's faces that they are seeing something truly special as Terry Kath continues to gather steam.

Terry was one of a kind! R.I.P. Although the studio version is great, this version really highlights Terry's skills and the raw quality he brought to the group. I love it. Another really good one from this concert is, "It Better End Soon." It's got an amazing guitar solo and preachin' vocal by Terry.

Go dig up their debut album when they were known as The Chicago Transit Authority and play these two tracks: "Introduction" and "Poem 58". Guitar player Terry Kath wrote "Introduction" and sang lead vocals. He was called "The White Ray Charles" by his bandmates. Soulful baritone voice! "Poem 58" is nine minutes of PURE FUNK led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. Kath's guitar will have you needing an ice pack for your jaw after you pick it up from the floor!

Terry Kath genius. Self taught, didn’t read music. Notice the horn players getting off on his solo. I’m telling you Terry was in a different dimension! Back when there was real music. Today’s music is shite

The magnificent Terry Kath. Chicago descended into a mediocre sappy ballad band after he passed. We may be getting old but watching and listening to him never does

I grew up in Western Massachusetts, Tanglewood and The Lennox Music Inn were great places to see concerts! I was at The Allman Brothers show in '79 where people crashed the gates. It was one of the last shows there!

When I saw Jimi Hendrix in early 1969 (my second and final time seeing him), Chicago, then CTA, opened for Hendrix. What I don’t know is if Jimi already knew about Terry, or found out about him on that tour.

Not sure about Chicago but by that stage Jimi hand picked some of his opening acts so its possible he saw them and invited them on the tour like he did with the moving sidewalks (Billy Gibbons).

James Pankow told the story in multiple interviews that CTA was playing at The Whiskey A Go Go in L. A. and Hendrix was in the audience. As the band was coming out of the dressing room to do their second set, and standing in the hallway was Jimi. Jimi went to their sax player Walt Parazaider and said "you guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs, and a guitar player that's better than ME! You wanna go on the road?" They said YEAH! and became Jimi's opening act on a national stadium tour.

Astounding audio for live recording then. Terry Kath is a Paganini type player, not afraid to go out of bounds, and fast phalanges.

While this was recorded for the second Chicago album, if you want to explore Chicago’s experimentation with different sounds, check out their debut album, Chicago Transit Authority, if you haven’t already done so. Somehow, the band convinced their record label to allow them to release a double album for their debut, and they continued doing so, with a three album set of a live performance at Carnegie Hall among them, up until their fifth album I believe. What new band can get away with that? As far as I am aware, only Chicago, or Chicago Transit Authority, as they were called when they first came on the scene. I believe there’s a lot of stories regarding this appearance at Tanglewood, but I’ve only read them from others more informed, so perhaps others will jump in with some of them. I think one them states that one of the reasons the drum kit is still being adjusted at the start of the video is that Chicago took the stage as a last minute replacement. That may be total myth, but it is among the stories I have heard.

There's a story that the trombonist tells of them playing a club in the LA area, as they are going backstage he's tapped on the shoulder, a guy says "you guys are great and your guitar player is better than me" he then turns around and is standing face to face with Jimmie Hendrix

I can see by your smile when it hits... "The Terry Kath Experience" 2016 - excellent documentary Underappreciated 'san francisco sound' greatness: "Sons Of Champlin" - the album 'Loosen Up Naturally' 1969 and the songs 'Freedom' or 'Get High'. "It's a Beautiful Day" 1969 and the songs 'Hot Summer Day', 'Wasted Union Blues'...then you'll be ready for 'Time Is'. Thank you for not stopping. I love seeing youngsters discover the power but those youtube-required 'pauses' will give me a heart attack - would you stop in the middle of foreplay with a new lover to make comments?

I'll be honest: I don't really like the Tanglewood version of 25 or 6 to 4 that much. Of course it's impressive to see Terry Kath on his guitar, but I think the much more structured solo of the studio version is much better. Also, the horn section must have had a bad day. There was a lot off or missing completely.

I agree. Kath sounds so much better to me on the studio cut. I guess some people like improvisation, but not me. Also, the sonics of a studio production usually sound immaculate. I almost never seek out live albums to listen to.
