At the end the person doesn’t say take care, he says Terry Kath.

Terry Kath was Chicago. They were not even remotely the same band without him. He was a genius. Check out the documentary "The Terry Kath Experience". Well worth it.

I'm a drummer myself & Steve Smith the former drummer for Journey is my cousin. So I bought some drums back in the 80's figuring it was in the " Smith" genes but that didn't pan out. Lol

@@angelagreen778 Well Hendrix was unreal. But he loved SRV & lots of others. He was very humble. It's like picking the beat off any list of greatest "anything" Everyone will have their own opinion. But this solo by Kath is mind blowing.

Terry Kath played Lead and Rythm Guitar at the same time LEGEND!

"I'm A Man" from the same concert (Chicago - Tanglewood '70) is also an epic tune. Terry Kath is a guitar God. peace.

Great version to pick. At the end they said "Terry Kath", not "take care". Terry was a criminally underrated guitarist. He blew away Jimi Hendrix so much Jimi took them on tour to open for him back when they were the Chicago Transit Authority. Try "Poem 58" from that CTA debut album, and the full seven song suite "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" from the second album, which includes "Make Me Smile" and "Colour My World" in that suite.

I saw Chicago this year. They are doing Ballet for a Girl live again in their shows. It was written by the trombonist.

You are fortunate to have a father who knows music! Some one to guide you a little.

Terry Kath was the Man. This remains one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen.

This is a master and his guitar! This shred predates the analog pedal effects that took off in the 70s and also digital IRs that dominate 21st century performances. Most 60s masters fought amp and speaker tweaks to get the sound and work feedback to effect. Terry Kath was one of the greats… yes, Tanglewood’s 25 or 6 to 4 guitar solo is among the very best ever!

If you become a musician, and play with other musicians, you can feel the all mighty groove with the right group of people, When all the parts are timed perfectly and everyone is in the zone. It is transcendental. It is the force.

A golden moment in the history of music. There's so much going on instrumentally, but don't overlook the vocal harmonies.

That's Chicago, that's their sound, they practice and glean perfection in every performance. Consistently perform with their target being perfection. That's their philosophy still today. Several of the original members attended music schools. They are very talented and are committed to excellence. They are committed to their unique sound.

This was my favorite band in my teens- I saw them 6 times from 1970-1975. They were phenomenal! So glad another generation is appreciating what they accomplished before the tragic death of Terry Kath ( R.I.P.)

Dude I almost feel bad for you that you're so young you never saw these groups actually play live. I have a tee shirt that says " I may be old but I saw all the great bands" And although I've seen them all this solo by the late Terry Kath is still one of the top 3 I've ever heard Keep rockin man.

That solo is awesome. The sheer innovative boldness and incredible flow is unmatched.

That guitar solo might be my favorite of all time. It’s surreal.

From a person who was there said it wasn’t Russian Roulette. He was a gun collector and had a handgun he was playing around with. The guy said to him to be careful and Terry said “hey, it’s not loaded see?” He thought it was empty and the clip was but there was a bullet in the chamber that he didn’t know about. He pulled the trigger and accidentally ended his life.

Your dad has good taste! Speaking of amazing live performances - ask him about the Allman Brothers Band at the Fillmore East. Perhaps listen to one or more of their studio version songs first and then try the live versions (as you did with this one). Whipping Post, Jessica, and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed are a few songs to get you started. And, as with many great rock bands, we have another tragic death. This time, It's Duane Allman.

Hot’Lanta is a great song from that concert!

He didn't say "take care", He said "Terry Kath". The world was robbed of an agreed upon collaboration between Jimmy Hendrix and Terry Kath. Hendrix brought Chicago on tour with them to open and the two admired each others playing so much. Hendrix died before they got the chance to do it. On a side note, I love how you say they sound better than the studio version because factor in that Tanglewood is an outdoor venue. That statement lends even more to just how good they sounded together. Also, I grew up with kids that had a bigger drum kit in their bedroom than they did. They got the most out of it though.

One of the first bands with horns to do “rock” music. Back in the day, my girlfriend was infatuated and in love with the band, the musicians, their music. I still get a tear in my eye thinking about the tragedy that ended CHICAGO as a rock band, let alone my former girlfriend. My heart has always been with her in a lot of ways. Music was one. RIP Terry Kath!

Chicago holds a special memory for me. They were the first band I ever heard LIVE - at the Historic Hersheypark Arena in Hershey, PA in 1977! To this day one of the best concerts I have ever heard! And that is saying something since beginning in 2002 to present I have worked for Hershey Entertainment and have ushered well over 200 concerts in almost 20 years!

I listen to the Tanglewood concert at least once a week, I recommend that you watch the whole concert, it's worth the time, it is awesome. PS, you have an awesome Dad for recommending it to you.

Except for all the hit singles and sold-out tours , of course. I get it, I liked the rockin' Chicago best, but you cannot call the latter version dead.

Side note, if you look closely at the singer Peter Cetera’s mouth there is a shine of metal. His jaw wax wired partially shut. He had his jaw broken in three places in a brawl after a Cubs game. That’s how you know they are truly from Chicago. 😜

If you check out the story it was accidental! Messing around with an " empty" gun but there was one in the chamber!

Dude - I just came across your review of this - because I typically go to you tube once a month just to replay this Chicago concert at Tanglewood. I was a teenager when CTA was big - and as the others here have stated - Terry Kath was the man! I am so glad a young music lover like yourself has discovered their early music. I refer this video (the whole concert) to every young musician I meet - you can tell they truly loved what they were doing (watch them as they play) - and oh by the way, this was 1970 - WAY before the concert production capabilities available today. They were all true musicians, with Terry leading the way. You didn't tell me anything in your review that I did not already know, but your excitement about the performance and Terry in particular was great to see and well worth watching! Love it!

Terry Kath died from a self-inflicted gun shot to the head, but he did not commit suicide. He was playing with a gun with an empty magazine and did not know that there was one round in the chamber. You were right... he IS a legend. Jimi Hendrix said he was a better guitarist that he and that he was the greatest guitarist in the universe and he got that right! I love Terry so much! His voice resembles Ray Charles a bit. He wa so amazing, in every way. Gone, but NEVER forgotten. I listen to Chicago every day! 🎷🎹🎸

you make a good point right away...back in the day bands would not just play the album version but would give you extended jams, medleys (bits and pieces of different songs put together), crowd interaction and all kinds of stuff. You would leave the arena exhausted and your ears were ringing for days...good times you would have loved it.

Check out Peter Frampton...Frampton Comes Alive....he WILL Not disappoint. He has a long guitar solo that is phenomenal. Hi FROM CARMEN IN NORTH CAROLINA. Love Chicago by the way. That solo is considered one of the BEST... Jimi Hendrix said he was UNREAL.

Tanglewood is only a few miles from where I live, and an incredible Concert Venue. I have seen some legendary acts there and the sound is always perfect. While I was only 2 in 1970 ... I know of a few people who were at this show or had Parents at this show and said they were blown away... and one of the most memorable concerts they every attended. I unfortunately grew up in the 80s when Chicago was in their ballad stage.... I didn't realize until I was in College how awesome they are.

I took a quick skim down the comments and didn't see anyone reference what it was about. Perhaps I should scroll further. Anyhoo, it's a time reference. It's about having a case of writer's block and trying to come up with a song. He's up till all hours into the morning and finally just writes down what he's experiencing trying to break the block. He looks at the clock and it's about, 3:34 or 3:35 in the morning or....25 or 6 (minutes) to 4 am. And yes Terry Kath is a god. He is such an underrated guitarist (Hendrix even said, "That cat is better than me") to the general public, Also not to be overlooked is his songwriting and especially his vocals. His husky and soulful vocals (Really showcased on "Make Me Smile"). He has often been referred to in musicians circles as a white Ray Charles. May Terry forever rest in peace.

CHICAGO!! THE GREAT!! They released #1 album after # 1 album in the early 70's. They were immensely popular and a musicians band. Lead GUITARIST TERRY KATH (RIP) was the soul of the band One of the best shows ever captured by these guys. Thanks!!

Jimi Hendrix called Terry Kath his favorite guitarist. Kath was legend. The horn section was legend too. My dad actually went to high school and college with one of them. Peter Cetera was a great bassist too, a real asshole but a great bassist. Definitely see the Terry Kath experience though where his now grown daughter gets to discover the man, the myth, the legend that is Terry Kath.

Hey Daniel, thanks for a wonderful channel. Been into reaction channels for a while, but yours is definitely one of the funnest and most genuine. It's weird feeling such a kindred spiritedness with a sixteen year old, but you remind me so much of myself at that age, including the music and the conversations I'd have with buddies back in the day. One band you really should listen to, considering your fascination for awesome guitar work, musicianship in general and spiritual undertones (I'm not religious myself but can't get enough of this stuff) is John McLaughlin's MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA (ask your dad), and specifically the album VISIONS OF THE EMERALD BEYOND (probably the easiest Mahavishnu album to listen to). Eternity's Breath 1 & 2 are totally mind-blowing as are the other tracks. It'd be awesome to see you react to that one. Thanks again, and keep up the good work :)

Tanglewood is in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. It’s the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the New York City Ballet. I’ve seen both at Tanglewood. It’s also a great concert venue, and I’ve been to several concerts there. It’s main amphitheater is called “The Shed”, although it’s NOT a shed by any stretch of the imagination. It has some of the best acoustics I’ve ever heard. Wish I’d heard this concert!

All love and respect to Terry Kath on lead guitar. But my vote for best live guitarist is the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan. His covers of 2 of Jimi Hendrix's classics: "Voodoo Chile" and "Little Wing" are both amazing. But so are "Lenny" and "Texas Flood". Now you see why Jimi Hendrix admired Terry Kath so much. It's said that the first time Jimi heard Terry Kath playing, he said " that guy's a better player than I am " They were supposed to go on tour with Hendrix, he died before that happened. Terry Kath, after a party one night was playing with two guns he always carried, he thought his semi auto was clear, it wasn't. He put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. There were a couple of people there, but it wasn't a suicide. Tragic loss, the band went really soft after, never got back what they lost.

Spot on except that they DID actually tour with Hendrix, it was his early death that prevented them from working with him in the studio, which was on the cards but sadly not to be.

So, the song was about trying to come up with a song at the last minute. He was coming off a bender of some sort. He was looking at a clock and it was either 25 minutes to six or six minutes to four.

Jimi Hendrix liked Terry so much, he said Terry is better than I am. Then he invited Chicago to Tour with him, which they most gladly said YES. This was done just as Chicago was just becoming popular, as Jazz rock was yet to catch on. Chicago was so good, as song writers, they had 6 completed albums before they got signed. As a result there first 3 albums were double albums. Some songs had a classical vibe. Listen to them. No filler songs

Since you love this live version, stop what you're doing immediately and go listen to the song "Introduction" from the same concert... you will thank me later. :) Then again screw it, listen to the entire 1:35 concert. It's a masterpiece! Chicago at their absolute best!

Suggestion: When you are showing a video go full screen in your browser so its a little easier for us to see. If its just a still of the album cover it doesn't really matter but for videos it would help. You can use your phone to read lyrics if necessary since we can't read them on the screen anyway.

I wasn't there at the concert, but based solely on the "take care" at the end, it sounds as though this might have been the very last performance of that particular concert. Can you imagine attending that concert, and waiting through all of Chicago's other musical brilliance, and then finally they save, quite possibly, what was the best for last ?

You may never read this because of how old the original post is but I happen to know a bit of the history of this concert. My brother was front row center. So, you notice at the first they are screwing around with the drums before the song starts? They had completed the last song of a two-hour set and the roadies came on to break down the drum kit when the audience started literally screaming for an encore, What you saw was them frantically trying to put the drums back together to do this song. Just a tidbit of info you probably wouldn't get otherwise. Oh and on Terry Kath's death. It wasn't suicide,,,it was just him being stupid with a loaded gun that went off when he thought the chamber was empty. Just sayin'

I saw Chicago at the Fillmore East in 1970 the same year as this concert in CA. It was aresome and the Fillmore was full of women!!!

Saw them 3 times, twice in the 70's and most recently 2016. ALWAYS a great show!

Check out Peter Cetara when he sings youll notice how his mouth barely opens when he sings. Not long before this performance he was in a fight at LA Dodger Stadium and was popped in the mouth and pushed down the stairs. His mouth was wired shut and soon after that he started singing again but was afraid to open his mouth to fa. He was worried that it would be stuck open lol. Just some useless info

Fun watching your generation react to my generation's music. I was 6 when this song came out. Your comment, that the live version sounds as good if not better than the studio version, is interesting. I think it says something about how music is produced nowadays. Back then bands were picked up by record labels because they were just plain good. In other words, they didn't have to doctor their sound too much in studios or over-produce anything. The vocalists needed no technical improvements. And so bands back then were able to just reproduce their sound just as well outside of the studio. ... because after all, they were bands! They came from playing live. Not to dis this generation. Every generation has its talent, but it feels the music industry designs music nowadays. If the vocals are not what they want, they tinker with it, use a ton of effects and they strip any soul out of it all. Producers are dictated by the market and think they know what we need to hear instead of letting the bands and the musical talent out there dictate the art. I'm sure good music is always there, it's just harder to find and it's certainly not on mainstream radio as it was back then. Then again, maybe I need to listen to your generation's music more.

My current favorite album from recent times is by a group that's certainly not "my generation" since they've been around since the 90'. But the Tool album Fear Inoculum came out in 2019 and became number one on the charts, beating Taylor Swift and many other contemporary artists:)

It's amusing when late era Peter Cetera only listener hear this, "I'm a Man" and on and on... Peter's necklace looks like a capo to help him hit those high notes. No click tracks or sequencers, just raw talent. I like to say Terry's like a guitar elemental. Jimi Hendrix thought he was one of the best. "I heard" that he thought Terry was better. Jimi also love Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. People in the audience were texting their friends. But the lasers! Where are the lasers?

Accidentally shot himself in the head, not suicide. This should always be mentioned when talking about Terry Kath, the Legend indeed. His daughter made a documentary about Terry and Chicago and it's very good, I highly recommend watching it. Last I checked it was available here on youtube for free, it's called Chicago: The Terry Kath Experience.

Terry didn't commit suicide. He loved guns. He was cleaning one while talking with friends. One said "is it loaded?" "Terry said no. See?" And shot his own face off. He wrote that song about staying up all night writing the song' hence the name "25 or 6 to 4".

A live performance worth checking out is Loggins and Messina ANGRY EYES Live. Could be considered better than studio as they are playing live. Can't rewind the tape to overdub!
