Chevrolet ripped up its own rule book when it came to the new Corvette C8 Stingray. A bold new look, a new chassis with the V8 positioned in the middle of it and a mission to take on the world's elite performance cars. So how quick is the new 'Vette? Steve Sutcliffe headed to Anglesey Circuit with his skid lid and stopwatch to find out.

Great lap time! Can't wait to see you lap the C8 Z06. That would be something else.
Compared to U.S. spec you are down 20 hp. and the sound seems more muted. I believe it is the European mandated particulate filter to blame. Still, fine performance and looks at a price no one else can touch.

Corvette recommends track settings on it's fully adjustable suspension. This would improve the track timing substantially. Camber at the front needs to be increased from -0.5 to -3.0, and at the rear from -0.5 to -2.49. Tire pressure is recommended to be reduced by 6 psi at the front, 5 at the rear. The camber settings can be used for street driving as well but will increase tire consumption.

The one thing Brit's know but rather like to ignore is that American automotive history has always drawn inspiration from aeronautics in their styling as far back as the 40's, especially fighter jets which to them represents their ingenuity in building fast, maneuverable, predatory tech. The C8 has stealth fighter looks and so for Americans it's cool. Brits don't have a stealth fighter, so naturally anything that looks like one has to suck because of the bitter taste of sour grapes. 😅

The C8 corvette was modeled after their shark inspired designs since the original mako shark concept, the C8 takes that and adds F-35 design cues including vortex generators into the design to both honor the Navy and Airforce, and to reduce drag by creating a small vortex that let's air roll over the hood and create a high pressure zone there to aid in downforce

Is that running the recommended track alignment?
They really did sacrifice the overall look of this car with that rear that screams Chevy Camaro and there's no doubt about that point. The chief engineer of this car has gone on record that they designed in order to fit two golf bags in the rear. It's practicality over aesthetics and IMO, really missed the bar of having that Stingray racer look but in a modern car. It would have looked much better with proper Stingray rear quarter panels but they chose overall profits and volume over creativity. As a former, huge fan of Corvette, that one does still sting a bit considering it's the first ever mass produced mid engined version.
You need to try the C8 Z06 it will surprise you in a good way, make sure its on Cup2 R.
The main issue with the looks is the tail. Just too much sheetmetal. I was hoping the Z06/GS would lose the trunk for more rear aero treatment. Still solid though
When the Zora appears, it should be significantly quicker, than even the Z06, which is no slug
Here was me thinking you're doing a great job picking your line during the run! Only for you to say it wasn't the best. It's certainly a car that does perform, but would you have one? It looks that it's about to transform in to some mega bot...
It’s 300k! In Australia
This is March, 2023. Why are we testing the slowest, entry level C8 that came out almost 4 years ago? Try a ZO6 with the track package option! Or wait for the ZR1, or the Zora!

And up until few years ago the best layout ever was in their opinion not mine not the mid engine one. Mile long race wins that several other manufacturer have even while having 1/100th of gm s budget. The unfortunate truth is that most americans are unware of the also hundreds of races lost outside of the usa in international competitions. An example? corvettes raced in europe for decades, c5rs and c6rs and with proper bop and not very favourable bop like in the usa they didnt outclass anybody. This is easily checked even on wikipedia. You shoot yourself in the leg because gm sells loads of corvettes inside usa and at best canada while companies like ferrari porsche lambo have been having year after year record sales outside of their country of origin. Its easy to say gm has sold all of its c8s when in japan for example they sold 5 times less than 911 or when for the whole of europe they r selling 70 cars a month when roughly porsche is selling 5 times more 911 in the same months. Going further back, off the top of my head they went undefeated for 3 years straight '85-'88 in SCCA Showroom Stock. Porsche and Lotus got so butthurt they had them banned from the series. In 1990 they set multiple FIA World Land Speed Endurance Records that still stand TO THIS DAY for a production car.
