McLaren 765LT - can it beat the Ferrari 488 Pista's time? | evo Leaderboard
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
McLaren's 765LT takes the already monstrously fast 720S and turns the wick up even further. On sticky Pirelli Trofeo R rubber, will it beat the P1 to become the fastest McLaren we've ever lapped around the stunning Anglesey circuit? We called in Steve Sutcliffe to find out...

I’ve never understood why using the curbing at all is ok? It’s like if you’re going to cut the track by not staying on the pavement then why not just use the grass too. Some more softly sprung cars have an advantage too as the are less affected by riding the curbs than the more track focused cars are, not to mention it’s annoying hearing it vibrate the camera gear every single time it runs over the ribbing 🤦🏻♂️

McLaren are adamant about making their cars suitable for anyone to drive. By using less wide of tires, it ironically makes the car safer because it lowers the threshold of grip and therefore makes the performance more predictable. Other companies like Corvette and Porsche rely on wide tires because they are heavily marketed by their laptimes. Ferrari and McLaren are more artistic with their approach and focus on building "drivers cars" as opposed to track machines, although they just so happen to produce very impressive laptimes.

These comments acting like Ferrari is better than Mclaren are hilarious. The 765LT is so much better than a 488 Pista it’s literally in another league
Not the ideal track for the 765 and it’s one where tyre grip is going to make a big difference on these slow speed bends! Cup2R’s are in a league of their own right now and offer ridiculous mechanical grip, Mac need to jump brands! Also to McLarens credit they do under tyre cars to enhance its drivability but for track specials they should up their sizes. A GT3 RS with half the torque has bigger rears lol

No ideal track ? If we follow your reasoning, there should be one track per car... I don't think it's an ideal track for a P1 which would also be more comfortable on faster curves. The facts are there, the 765LT is a monster, it doesn't need to show more to make it understood. But it just so happens that it's not the fastest road-legal car in the world, that's all.

pista & 765LT have the same tyre sizes, not really an excuse. At the end of the pista lap, Steve mentions it likely could be even quicker (he says half a second) in bone dry, warm conditions. The difference between the trefeo R and cup2R are not as much as the gap in laptime. Its simply just not faster here, both cars would prefer a more power track. Probably more logical to argue the open diff in the mclaren vs the LSD in the ferrari is a bigger factor. Although the mclaren did launch 2 years after the pista which says alot..

Respectable lap time relative to the Pista given the superior dry handling of Cup 2 Rs vs Trofeo Rs, though I'm surprised it's only 4/10 quicker than a 720s. Maybe the 765 LT is approaching the limit of what's possible with an open diff on a road car.

Traction limited. That's why he short-shifted
I can tell that that car handles extremely well just by watching it.
if it's just lap times we're looking to improve maccas simply need wider tyres, front ones especially. All of them - even the Senna for heaven's sake - have absurdly narrow tyres for a true track focused setup. However I don't believe it's a mistake as such rather than a knowing trade off given McLaren appear to want their cars to communicate alot to the driver, which narrow tyres do better.
I initially read it as "Pasta's time".
Like I've said before... **SINCE** we're throwing 'Cup 2Rs' on EVERYTHING, FINE... let's get a '992 Turbo S' (w/Lightweight Package) throw some 'Cup2Rs' on it & let's see what it'll do!

When the 765 first came out it was slower yes, but since, as said by many journos, it’s become a different car, and is definitely faster round a circuit
I think we can all agree, as modern cars become more and more powerful, the importance of good tyre is amplified. I'm surprised by McLaren on this decision.
Forgive me for saying, you can see he is braking too early, is slow around the bends, yet gives it the full beans coming out of a corner. This guy is a journalist, not a race driver.
Isn’t accelerating over, and going over those rumble strips having a negative impact on those times ?.
I'm surprised the EVO team hasn't tried the Senna yet. It should be faster than the 675LT on the track, right ? And now, we are waiting for the replacement of the Aventador which should be monstrous, then perhaps the return of a holy trinity of replacements 918/P1/Laferrari around 2024 ? I look forward. All this should run faster than an SF90, it's going to be crazy.

Rerun on the Cup2R
Still the best, Steve. So glad you're still out there testing.
Most buyers of this car probably won't track it as it was intended. That being said, i certainly can appreciate it, but that Singer DLS, that Chris Harris just drove, seems way more fun.
Two things to know: 1 Pirelli’s suck balls big time and they are no comparison to Cup2r’s 2 McLarens need a limited slit diff badly to put its power down out of corners better and be more stable under power - thank god, the new Artura has got it, finally
Right from the start of the video I was pessimistic. Weather looked cold, and my first thought was the test would be invalid due to not testing cars on the same day & same driver. Secondly tyres, as the Ferraris were shod with super sticky "qualifying tyres", which are only optimal for a few laps. Which is also an SF90 trick too i.e. qualifying mode to give one or two hot laps. The McLaren will keep performing lap after lap, and its tyres are genuinely fitted to road car ordered by customers - unlike the Ferraris where they are just an option, so they can generate good press results.
Steve!!!
Why the P1 doesn't have holes in the brake disc..?
Pleaee do a lap with the AMG GT Black Series
Sureprised to see the P1 still being the hero. And that its not faster than the Pista. The Mclaren 765 was no doubt targeted towards the Pista.
doesnt suprise me it couldnt pull out ahead of the pista it is such a fast car its crazy
Better tyres or not it should be trouncing a Pista.. I think Ferrari’s give the drivers more confidence to attack.
Looks pretty darn violent

Please bring the AMG GT black series.

Seems a bit old information, I want to know how it stacks up against newer stuff like the Ferrari SF90 or 296GTB
Consider the price to performance, 720S is still my choice
Seemed to be a bit too much car for either the track and/or our pilot this time! Don't know if this is a good or bad thing. Here's where we are today: too much? Not that I wouldn't do bad things to have one in my garage, though...
Where is the EVO laptimer, would be a great addition for your fans. Jus saying…
Change driver?
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Need a driver mod an re-run both cars. To much Revs going into turns. Just sounded like the driver wasnt comfortable with the car, but that was only listening 😅 but the McLaren’s are so light when you apply to much rpm going into turns they wana straighten out instantly.
If test was on Cup2r tires it would be second faster
