I moved to Chesterfield in 1990. My job moved to Sheffield from Reading and we stopped off in Chesterfield on the way just for interest and fell in love with the place. I don’t regret moving there for a single minute. I moved to Plymouth in 2015 for personal reasons and although I like living in Plymouth, I really miss Chesterfield. I’m glad to see that Henstock’s baker’s still there.

Born in Chesterfield in 1950, and this video brings back so many memories. The shops may have changed their names and some of the buildings I remember have disappeared - but the ‘bones’ are still there. The black and white mock Tudor buildings, the Market Hall, of course the Crooked Spire. Excellent video - thank you.

I lived in Chesterfield from 1980 to 1993 , the town was absolutely buzzing back them with full busy markets the town was surrounded with industry, excellent pubs full of atmosphere good shops I loved the place , I returned for the first time last September with my wife and stayed at the premier inn on Elder Way the former Cooperative department store, for me Chesterfield has changed everything does over time , but the town has lost its atmosphere, the only busy pubs are Wetherspoons ( nothing wrong with Wetherspoons of course) the market is a shadow of its former self ... I still love the place though but its quiet to quiet , and I was talking to the Victor in St Mary's and he says this is the first time in Chesterfield's history it has become a tourist town only , tbe industry has gone and will never return and has taken Chesterfield's spirit with it .

Lived in Chesterfield all my life, been in the crooked spire many times and at Christmas it is decorated beautiful with Christmas Trees all lit up, i am very proud of the spire, i was really pleased with your ending to show the Town Hall at the end, as with the times some shops have closed and the market has gone down hill a bit, that is the signs of the times of today, a shame really, but i have seen many changes here and i would not want to live any where else, and of course i loved your video of what i call my home town.

I live in Cambridgeshire which is flat and very boring, I'd move to Chesterfield in a heartbeat, in fact, I love Derbyshire in general. It also has the Peak District very close, love it!

Hi, would you recommend Chesterfield as a place to live? I currently live down South and an looking to move up North, mainly due to the difference in house prices and the cost of living. @@molly26189 Depends on everything else you're looking for in a town, I spent 18 years there before moving to Australia but my brother, sister and mum all still live and love to live there and I too miss it, this video brings back some great nostalgia, if you're looking for the not so busy shops and great little getaways (Look into the places Bakewell and Chatsworth) on top of the Peaks and district it's beautiful country.

I have driven through many times with never a glance. Then I was on a coach tour that stopped for a break. WOW ! it is fabulous . Beautiful Town.

Born and bred in Chesterfield. It was fantastic growing up here I have so many memories that I will keep with me forever. Past and present council policies have killed the town centre it used to be so vibrant on a weekend with coach parties from all over. I feel sorry for the youngsters wanting a good night out now it's a shadow of what it was.

I was born here. Pubs and clubs in 1980's and early 1990's were great. Had great shops, book shops,record shops with Hudson's and one in shambles.

One Friday the phone rang and when I answered the man on the line wanted to know if I could go over to Chesterfield to photograph a wedding. When is your wedding sir? I asked, "tomorrow" said he. I had to explain that this was extremely short notice and that I would need to call him back after I'd worked out whether I could cover it. I managed to fit him in in the end and went straight out to the farm to finalise details. The next day I was at the crooked spire and got there in advance. It wasn't a lavish or well planned wedding and seemed rather rushed. I was having a chat with the vicar when the bride turned up early, we both saw her enter the door and instead of flowers she was carrying in her hands, a baby. Both the vicar and I looked at each other and casting my eyes upwards, I said "Not much chance of that straightening up today." Then we both collapsed into fits of giggles.

I’ve lived in Chesterfield all of 58 years and thoroughly enjoyed this and learned a few things about my hometown a very enjoyable watch , I’ve a day off work today and there’s a 1940’s event in the town centre so the wife are going to have a pub lunch and look around ,Excellent 👍

Enjoyed this video very much. I’m a 73 year old lifelong Spireite now living most of the time in the Philippines. It’s wonderful to see the town again.

Thank you for coming to our town, I'm glad you and James enjoyed it. Although it wasn't in your film did you get to go to Queen's park which is just outside of the town centre? Regarding the crooked spire, visitors are sometimes allowed to go up inside the church to see the bells, when you get to the roof there's an opening and a walkway around the base of the spire which gives magnificent views of the town from all sides. The inside structure of the spire is made of wood and it's thought that because the builders used poor quality wood when it was constructed the wood warped as the seasons changed causing it to become famously known as The Crooked Spire. An interesting fact about the spire is that the base of it isn't actually attached to, but was placed on top of the roof. The base has an extremely heavy weight in it which prevents the spire blowing away in windy weather. We do have some really nice buildings here and I'm proud to be a resident of Chesterfield. Thank you for showcasing our lovely town👍

Such fabulous old buildings that have stood the test of time. Or in the case of the Victoria Centre, survived a three hour visit from Keith Moon.

Lovely old historical buildings in town and huge big main shopping area in town centre and appears to be very clean . Love the old Tudor buildings ..

I loved this video. I visited Chesterfield from Sheffield, with my mother when I was ten, and later my parents moved overseas with my brothers and I some 78 years ago. Chesterfield is delightful, but has changed a lot.

Lived there during the sixties and seventies. Spent hours watching first class cricket in Queens Park which must be the most idyllic cricket ground in England. Watched the Spireites numerous times from the old Saltergate football ground. I used to buy vinyl records from 'Some Kinda Mushroom' on Sheffield Road. Often met my teenage mates in The Grosvenor cafe across from the Crooked Spire Church. Went to William Rhodes Secondary School in Boythorpe too. I'll never forget my young years living in this town.

Yes, I liked the ending ! (the rest of the town was a lovely surprise too 👍💯✔) At first I thought the Town Hall may have been a Stately Home set in it's own grounds, then as we came nearer, I wondered if it might have been a Mill in the past 🤔 a grand building anyway, like many in the town. Just seen for the first time looked really nice on your walk lived here all my life, not looking as good at the moment I would say but inspired me to have a walk round again. Surprised you didn't do shambles though but did enjoy the video thanks.

I’ve been to Chesterfield once, but I didn’t get to see half of what you’ve shown us, what I love about your videos is you take us up and down streets and alleys that I would never probably see, so even if I’ve been to the place myself I see much more than I realised was there, and it’s certainly the case here. All the old buildings are amazing especially when compared to the new buildings on the other side of the road, you’ve shown that Chesterfield has a lot to offer, and the grand finale at the end was a WOW🤩. Surely there’s not a grander town hall anywhere. You remind us to look up and I will be doing that for sure even if it does give me neck ache😂😂… oh and hello to your brother….thanks again for a lovely video.

Surprisingly beautiful old town. Very clean and pedestrian friendly. A bit short on trees and flowers like most English towns but quite an underrated place.

Chesterfield is my home town but I’ve been down under for the last 3 years so thank you for the walk around. Can’t believe how quiet it is at that time.

This town like Bakewell is very clean I was surprised that there are no plants anywhere Loved to see the church with the spire My grandparents came from around here over 100 year ago

I absolutely love chesterfield. Everywhere always looks so well maintained and each time I've visited the place, there's always been a really good feeling about the place. It's such a shame to see shops close their doors. I'm not a fan of online shopping, I like to look at stuff.

Lovely video of Chesterfield. I grew up there in the 70's and can remember them building the shopping centre on Low Pavement by demolishing the backs of all the buildings and just keeping the facades (I think I learnt that word there too!) The large medieval looking building opposite M&S was the Co-op and I can remember buying our first microwave oven there in the 70's. There were no microwave meals then so it was mainly used to defrost bread and make baked potatoes. The Primark store used to be Littlewoods. The new shopping centre near the church was where the old bus station used to be, but I think they did quite a good job of matching the local architectural styles.

The second from last building you glanced at,set back from the roadside,is 23 West Bars,which upto the end of March 2022 was the home of Shipton Hallewell & Co Solicitors.The building was specifically built as a solicitors practice in 1830 but is now awaiting either new office tennants or a private sale,but had you looked direct south from this building,and been able to time travel to 100 years ago,you would have seen the splendid Chesterfield Market Station,terminus of the now long removed railway line to Lincoln.The Portland Hotel was in essence The Railway Hotel but stands alone now.

Born in Newbold, Chesterfield 71, left to live near Huddersfield In 95, lived on a narrowboat since 2006... Chesterfield is a gem of today to me , because when I visit every single resident speaks English , everywhere I look , English people , its just , a nice break from multiculturalism .

Lived here all my life,great place and it’s on the edge of the beautiful Peak District.

Loved this! What a beautiful town-so clean. I love how they've honored the historic architecture. This has been a real treat for me, because my Great, Great Grandmother, Mary Jane Allen was born here in 1942 and immigrated in 1949 with an aunt after the death of her parents. She walked crossed the American West to Utah from St. Louis, MO with a wagon train. What a change of scenery she experienced. I've learned that she called bad tea, weasel piss! I'm not sure if that is still used there today. I'd love to come and visit some day and add this to my other UK adventures.

Mary Jane must have been born in 1842, not 1942 as you have said. Many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made the same journey that she did so long ago. What courage!

It was 1842, but I didn’t know how to correct it and she was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She ended up marrying a George Farnsworth in Utah. George had lost his first wife and son on the trek to Utah. What a sacrifice! Interesting enough he had been born in France where his parents were part of the military forces during the Napoleonic wars.

stayed in Chesterfield as a base for trips to Peak District, York and Matlock. It's such a shame I never went to the town center. Looks beautiful.

Instead of going up to the town hall, you should have gone left through the new post office walkway, over the bridge over Markham Road to one of the most beautiful parks. The Queens Park with the wonderously mesmerising second cricket ground of Derbyshire county cricket club and seen the beauty of this cricket ground. A chance missed in your brilliant shoot of our great town. Thank you.

I would recommend eating at a place called the "market pub" but you'd need to book it in advance. I'm only so far into the video so not sure if this person walks past it at all but it's near the back end of town facing the smaller market (there are 2 markets). It's a very small place but the food is delicious. It's impressive to see the kitchen that they cook their food in. It is tiny! Also if you do decide to go there, take cash. I think because the place is as old as it is they can't get any signal.

Just before he starts to walk up to the town hall, across the road on the left you’ll see a modern building (Royal Mail), walk underneath the building and go over the bridge. You’ll end up in Queens Park with miniature railway, boating, cricket ground, etc

Queens park is a must visit it would be a great place to have a little picnic. The boats dont go on the pond anymore but the train runs around still. Also the tea rooms that where shown do serve really nice scones!

Brilliant video. I've lived here since I born. Wouldn't change it for anything in the world. Definitely underrated The spire is made out of wood which over time warped to give the spire it's lean. The spire is made up of different types of wood which has resulted in it's 45 degree twist. This is the historic, most approved and recognised reason why the spire is crooked. You'd only know that if you grew up here. Difficult to find an answer on the internet. Just ask a local. Slight shame you missed the Pomegranate Theatre as the building has some great old-time/gothic architecture.

TY Gimball Walk for your visit . As a resident of Chesterfield and proud to call it home, here are a couple of things you missed. The Pomegranate Theatre which as you looked at the entrance to the museum (currently closed for a major refurbishment) was a little down to the left and Queens Park which was as you faced the walk to the Town Hall was behind you about 300 yards. For anyone visiting I recommend the Vintage Tearooms which has warm, welcoming and friendly staff and The Sorbo Lounge (which used to be the old main Post Office) for brunch/lunch although as my brother is 1 of the chefs at Sorbo I might be a little biased 😁. Chesterfield is also a great place to base yourself to explore the Peak District and Derbyshire Dales, and easy access to alot of cities, Sheffield, Leeds, Derby, Nottingham, Lincoln all around an hour or less away by car.

Hi I was born in Chesterfield but never lived there. You did the town proud! It’s even prompted us to have a ride out there today. Unbelievably when you were showing the timber buildings, I said to my wife it reminds me of Chester just before you said the same 😂. Keep them coming, we do enjoy your quick experience of the towns. You will never cover everything or it would be a 2 hour video! This was a perfect length.

Ditto, I was born Chesterfield 16th June 1948. It’s only recently that I’ve re-found the town. I’ve been a few times recently, it makes a decent day out. Erm, I have to admit tipping Chesterfield a few times over the years but I don’t think that counts. 😀

A shame you didn't fully walk down The Shambles!! has one of the countries oldest pubs there and yet as a kid i'd be going down them every other week because my mum would go to the body shop that was located there haha! great video and a nice hit of dopamine for my Chezzy soul !

@@Spacebadger It's some of the little side streets on the east side of the market place. The Royal Oak pub (sadly closed at present) is so old it was stopped at by Knights on the way to the Crusades!

As a Chesterfield resident i genuinely thought you were going to the Queen's Park for the finale but yes our Town Hall and lawns do look well.

Rykneld Square is on the old roman road and site of a roman Fort. Hence the name Chesterfield, Latin for Fort in the field.

I can't see why Chesterfield should be classed as an underrated town. Judging by your excellent video, it looks a very nice town centre. The ornate buildings, many of which are of Tudor design, are impressive to say the least. Well I originate from Buxton, and have only ever been through the town on the train (like Belper), and I never expected to see that it seems to be such a pleasant place. I like the way that you describe locations on your videos, some don't give any info by other YouTubians! It's such a pity that you see some shops closing down that have been trading for years, like here in Chesterfield, and it's not good whatsoever. On-line is alright for certain items, but it's always better if you can see something in the flesh, as I'd call it. As regards clothing., I've had many disappointments, with wrong sizes and colours. See what a dead place Colwyn Bay is, where I live now - so many shops closed and banks too! To sum it up, I really do like the look of Chesterfield, and many thanks for producing this film.

Thank you. A lovely little video. Other things which could have been showed; the pomegranate theatre next to the museum ; both theatre and regional cinema with satellite live drama and exhibitions and beautiful old stage! Also at the bottom of the gardens leading up to town hall there is a pedestrian crossing . Cross here and go tgrough some modern buildings and you will see a bridge which takes you straight into Queens Park which is beautiful with a boating lake , flower gardens two recreational parks, tennis courts, a race track, band stand cafe and more. Also opposite crooked spire church is the tourist info centre with free tour guides and walk and listen guides you can hire. Also, the museum is open most weekdays and is extremely interesting with an art gallery showing exhibitions often and very knowledgeable museum officers and quizzes and activities for kids. Also the market when open is very lively and some people still sell their wares by singing or shouting. Good farmers market days and good antiques market days. A trip up the spire for the stories of how it was made and how it might have got crooked; also good view of the town. Lady Baden Powell was also from Chesterfield! Just adding bits but what you said, filmed and showed of Chesterfield on a late Saturday afternoon was very good and interesting and I looked at the buildings in a new light. Thank you

My only memory of Chesterfield is driving to the football ground only finding out the game was called off! Chesterfield v Burnley 87. I remember seeing the crooked spire but missed the entire town centre, It looks very nice compared to Burnley, which lost half of it's best buildings to town planners.

It's a great town!

The roof of the spire is crooked because of the weight and the weather causing the wood to warp due to many years of being exposed to the weather which is mainly rain and wind the spire used to be straight they may have changed the roof replacing the wood but decided to keep it crooked as it is now know as a landmark where the roof has been crooked for a long time now and it’s how people recognise it’s the town but yes there are many theory’s.

I did.

I use to go every wednesday night, to the pubs and clubs i got to be well know around the pubs. i did stand out a lot well know as Karen, its a very friendly place use to go into the beach where the sharks head is but it was not called the beach then its now near on 10 years since ive been out ill health no way could i walk in high heels again. there is quite alot more of shops you missed out, but now i can annoy my kids by showing them the windows i put in (was a joiner) when you went past the church by road the building on right with lellow windows over the road from church i fitted them, every time we drive past i annoy the kids me saying look i put them in

I bet you did what I did and watched this video to see if you spotted anyone you know Ha ha. Also if you went out on a Wednesday night I bet we've crossed paths. I remember when the main place to go was mojo's (many years ago) I can never seem to remember the name of the place before they called it mojos. I also remember going to Livingston's and bar rocket. Good times.

@@begbouldme5826 it was Time night club with big Dave on the door, use to go in the Rocket first, went to Livingston's. but thats when . you would have come across me well known in all the pubs on a wednesday. what was the pub over the road from Rocket

Chesterfield is a very good base for the Peak District, White and Dark. People make the mistake of stopping in the White Peak only to find that it can be a long drive to the Dark and vice versa. Whereas the town offers easy access to both.

Bro. The moment I saw them in town I freaked out

At around 11.45 on the right used to be a ladies dress shop called Mami. The winding wheel was the Gaumont and further along was the Wimpey Bar. That was sixty years ago about.

I was born there in the early 50s . the only thing I remember was queens park with ducks and boats for hire , and of course the crooked spire , I left at the age of 18 never to return , back then it was a thriving community , I cant say it was a fun place to stay ,
