This gameplay mode nerfs bishops and knights (by a factor of 2 more than would be obvious), and nerfs pawns into oblivion, in addition to restricting the king to a single file. So yes, the "strong" pieces become far _stronger_ relative to the other pieces.

Dunno how possible, but it'd be a fun idea to have a bot that switches from Martin to Stockfish depending on who ends up having Mate in 4 or less (so Martin at the beginning til you have M4 then it becomes stockfish until it has M4 where it would go back to Martin again)

  • @ChessRecess

something i noticed each bishop only has 8 squares it can land on in this "variant". at fist thought it would be 16, half as much as their normal 32, but it's only 8. and you also end up with two "sets" of 8 squares for both of them, but once you move them they are stuck on that set of 8. for example, your bishop on F1 can move to e2 c4 and a6, OR g2. if it moves to g2 it puts it on it's second set of 8 squares, and it can never move to those other squares, and vice versa.

I tried this. It's hard. 4 pawns and a bishop basically will never move unless Martin let's you, which he tends not to. Knights become largely worthless too because they lose half their moves. It's probably possible to win, but Martin really needs to cooperate.

I tried and maybe I got lucky, but I won the first game with a few takebacks, and completely won the second promoting to two queens. The key I think is to wait for an undefended piece and then attack it. If martin defends make a few different moves and wait for another undefended piece. I tried a game with the other columns instead, and definitely felt like it was even a bit harder, so that could be an interesting challenge. I think Nelson kinda overthought it, if you keep attacking Martin's queen, he will inevitably hang it at some point, and if you cant attack it, play waiting moves until you can

Lately, I've been trying to beat Martin by playing alphabetically. On the first move, you have to move a piece on the a file. Second move b-file. Once you get done with h-file, go back to the a-file. If there is no piece on that file that can be moved, or if you get checked and it forces you to move out of order, you lose

Chess but you can't move to or capture or move through the four center squares d4 d5 e4 e5.. They form a very tall mountain so high you can't even move through them. The bots can use them normally.. Knights can move around the edge of the mountain for example N from d3 is allowed to move to f4 . . .. Special rule = Checks work normally even over the top of the mountain.. However, you are not allowed to do a check that relies on a piece to defend it through the mountain even if it's checkmate.. . For example: Black K on c8, ..White B on h2. and White Q on f7. The White Q can't move to c7 because the B on h2 is not defending the Q. on c7, because the Bishop can't defend the Q through the mountain, so you can't make that Q move (unless some other piece not working through the mountain can defend). (Why? The bot would think the Bishop is defending the Q for checkmate.) .. Play against Nelson. You can call it "She'll be coming round the mountain when she comes." These variations are neat. I'm not great on explaining things so please ask for clarification. Would really like to see how you work without being able to access the center squares or go through them.

At 12:05, Nelson violated the rule by placing his knight on the b file.

A few ideas which may make it more playable: * Remove the pawns you aren't allowed to move forward (so the pawns at b2, d2, f2 and h2.) * You can move to a "forbidden" file under certain conditions: 1) if you checkmate, 2) if you give check, 3) if you take a piece (but not a pawn), 4) if you take a pawn, 5) if you take a piece or a pawn. (Pick only one option for the game)

How about instead of columns, you can only move onto ranks 2,4,6,8? So you can move each pawn forwards two spaces, but then you have to wait for Martin to take one of them before any of your pieces can escape.

I had a go at that last night - won at the fourth attempt, having accidentally played on to the wrong rows on the first three!
