Cherokee Memorial Song

Ойын-сауық

Recorded next to the river in the Great Smoky Mountains National Forest, April 2nd, 2009.
This song came to me after my grandmother passed away, March 1998. I first sang it at her funeral. This song is on the drum, I ask it be used in a respectful way.

I guess you can't make everyone happy. I'm Cherokee not Lakota, if you noticed there are no links to purchase my music! I'm the lead singer for a southern singing group but I felt this song wasn't about me so on the day I filmed this I didn't want to show my face. I've been singing and dancing since the early 1970's just for the enjoyment but I have won a few contests, I've never been called a culture vulture.

Thank you for the beautifully, well done song to your grandmother! My great great grandmother, Sarah was full-blooded Cherokee. She lived to be 94 years young, I say young because she had a strong sense of vitality and a youthful spirit! She was blind in her later years but still loved having company, and could still whip you up a four course meal every time you went to visit her! She lived several hours drive away from us, but we visited her often! I can still smell her large backyard apple orchard, coming down her long driveway, lined with big beautiful oak trees.. I look back all those years ago and I smile, in my eyes, she was as strong as an oak, and beautiful inside and out, I miss her, and cant help but think of what an amazing reunion it will be when we all get to heaven singing joyfully! GOD BLESS! ❤

I'm an animal rescuer, they find me, some come to me for a peaceful way to pass, some stay with me for many yrs, all my fur babies are misfits, stories to horrible to share, but at least I can give them comfort for whatever time they have here on earth, lost some beautiful animals, but always carried everyone one of them with me for life. Very proud to say I have helped them come into this world and have had to sit and stay with them until they pass. We call our house the isle of misfit toys. I had a hybrid wolf for 17yrs nobody wanted my BEST FRIEND will never forget him, RIP Moe.

I am Cherokee Nation (west) and I have never been to the Smokey mountains. But somewhere in that area there is a mountain named after my Cherokee grandfather. Your song by the river transported me there and helped me feel connected to his ancestors. Wado. My grandfather was made an honorary Lakota Chief after WWll and given an eagle feather war bonnet; so I have old photos of my Cherokee grandfather in a Lakota headdress. Some traditionalists say this is not 'correct' but for him it was, as he bridged many worlds. I believe we are all now rainbow bridges of many cultures coming together and sharing our gifts with each other. Creating a new/old way which will carry us forward. Spirit is never stagnant; always changing and reforming the cosmos of which we are part.

I am honored to be close to the Great Spirit, and a child of nature. The beauty in the Mother Earth is within every Native American, as is the creators wisdom. As the prints left behind were no prints, but lore, legend, and passing on through the rites of passage.

I am very happy to hear you make this song, though it was born from a passed loved one, The happiness I get, is because my Great GrandMother was Mary Greyfeather. She did not take the trail of tears, but stayed in the back country of North Carolina in the 1800's. One reason for my happiness in hearing this, is because I find myself singing in a language I never learned when Im on a journey traveling. How I sing from my spirit reminds me of some of this song. I mourn with this song for what it means for me as a person as well. I never knew this side of my family, it was taken from me at way too early of an age. My mother always refused to teach what she learned out of shame. I'm slowly learning things now but there is no one I can speak to.

I am of CHEROKEE heritage. But very far back. We know nothing of our tribe or where our family was located. I wish I knew some of our language. But I still sit and listen to this song and others and it gives me peace. I do believe myself and teen son are only ones in our family who do! Thank you very much for publishing this!

Thank for this song. My great grandmother was Cherokee, another Comanche. I am grateful for this song. I have lost my niece, father , pet and 2 siblings in the past ten years. To hear this song has brought a balm to my soul.
