Chengdu, Streets and Du Fu Garden - China 2004 Travel Channel
Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province - known for its spicy food - tended to be one of the smaller cities, with about 3.5 million inhabitants (about 10 million in 2020), but it is growing rapidly. Chengdu is a city that loves to consume, and its residents are said to prefer to sit in teahouses than to work. Probably this is a rather malicious gossip since about half of Apple's iPads are produced here. But many other industries and scientific fields are also represented in Chengdu. They still existed, the bicycles, even if the cars increasingly dominated the streetscape.
The most important sight for tourists from the west is the Panda Breeding Station. The Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has made a name for itself in panda research worldwide.
A huge statue of Mao Zedong dominates the city center. The Sichuan Science and Technology Museum dominates the background.
The streets of Chengdu in 2004 reflect the traffic of the past but probably also of the future. Bicycles still dominated, but individual car traffic increased more and more. Today, things are going in the other direction. In the future, bicycle traffic will play a much bigger role again. Private car traffic is increasingly being displaced from city centers.
A must for every Chengdu visitor is a visit of Du Fu's Garden with the famous Du Fu Thatched Cottage, Du Fu Cao Tang. Du Fu once was a post officer in Xian. Due to his socially critical poems, he was forced to go into exile to Chengdu, where he lived for three years. Here, he wrote his most important poems. For the Chinese, he has a similar meaning as Goethe has for the Germans.
Chengdu is also famous for its brocade weaving. In the meantime, the oldest looms should have their own museum.

Es gabt sie noch, die Fahrräder auch wenn die Autos in zunehmendem Masse das Straßenbild dominierten.
Die wichtigste Sehenswürdigkeit für Touristen aus dem Westen ist die Panda-Zuchtstation. Die Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding hat sich weltweit einen Namen in der Panda-Forschung gemacht.
Das Zentrum der Stadt dominiert nach wie vor eine riesige Statue von Mao Zedong. Den Hintergrund dominiert das Sichuan Science and Technology Museum.
Die Straßen von Chengdu im Jahr 2004 spiegeln den Verkehr der Vergangenheit aber vermutlich auch der Zukunft wieder. Noch dominierten die Fahrräder, aber der individuelle Autoverkehr nahm immer mehr zu. Heute geht die Entwicklung in die andere Richtung. In Zukunft wird der Fahrradverkehr wieder eine wesentlich größere Rolle spielen und der private PKW Verkehr wird mehr und mehr aus den Innenstädten verdrängt werden.
Der Besuch von Du Fu's Garden mit Du Fus Reetdachkate, auch Du Fu's Strohhütte genannt, ist ein Muss für jeden Chengdu Besucher. Du Fu war eigentlich Postbeamter in Xian. Durch seine sozialkritischen Gedichte war er gezwungen nach Chengdu ins Exil zu fliehen, wo er drei Jahre lebte. Hier schrieb er seine bedeutendsten Gedichte. Für Chinesen hat er eine ähnliche Bedeutung wie Goethe für die Deutschen.
Chengdu ist auch berühmt für seine Brokatweberei. Den ältesten Webstühlen sollte in der Zwischenzeit ein eigenes Museum zur Verfügung stehen.

Hallo Richard! Vielen Dank für den wunderbaren Kommentar! In der Zwischenzeit hat sich hier allerdings auch einiges verändert. Bei uns ist alles OK, Wir lassen gerade unseren Garten umbauen (was soll man sonst in der Pandemie machen :-)) Und erhalten voraussichtlich nächste Woche die 1. Hallo Richard! Vielen Dank für den fantastischen Kommentar! Natürlich hast Du recht bezüglich der Radfahrer/-innen, sie sind uns aber deshalb wieder ins Auge gestochen, da sie bereits im Verschwinden waren (auch in China), letztendlich aber eine Wiedergeburt erleben. Am beängstigendsten fanden wir es in Vietnam, wobei es dort eine Mischung aus Radfahrer/-innen und Mopedfahrer/-innen gibt. (Ehrlich gestanden halte ich nichts von genderneutraler Schreib- und Sprechweise). Alles Gute und viel Glück im neuen Jahr wünschen wir Euch!

Chengdu is a very interesting city - like where we live, Cambridge, there are also a lot of cyclists! The Du Fu ancient garden is a fascinating heritage site and the connection to the poet is really compelling! Best of luck with all your travels in 2021!
