Eckfeld, an idyllically situated local community in the southern Volcanic Eifel, held its 1050th-anniversary celebration on July 1 and 2, 2023. Unfortunately, the weather on Saturday did not show its best side. However, that was already forgotten during our visit on Sunday. A total of 4000 visitors appreciated the festival.
In 973, the estate 'Ekkiveit", the origin of Eckfeld, was mentioned for the first time in a deed of donation from Emperor Otto I to the monastery of Echternach. Since then, Eckfeld has experienced some distinctive stations politically. In 1794, it was assigned to France, at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 to the Kingdom of Prussia, and in 1946 to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany.
But the history of Eckfeld goes back further. Among others, the "Eckfeld prehistoric horse" and the "oldest honey bee in the world" were found in the 44.3-million-year-old Eckfelder Trockenmaar near the present-day village. They can be seen today in the Maar Museum in Manderscheid.
Although the local community of Eckfeld has "only" about 400 inhabitants, there is a close feeling of togetherness, which on the one hand side is open to innovations, but on the other hand, also appreciates old skills and traditions. Eckfeld has had its own 100 MBit fiber optic network as a matter of course for over 10 years. A biogas plant, which could also be visited on the occasion of the celebration, provides green energy.
Recently, there is also a free charging station for e-bikes at the bakehouse in the center of the village, where visitors can easily explore the surroundings by bike. Cafés and vacation apartments in Eckfeld and the surrounding area make for a relaxing vacation stay.
The 1050th-anniversary celebration offered an ideal opportunity to observe old crafts, some are still practiced today, up close. These were accompanied by a musical and artistic entertainment program, arranged by the MV Eckfeld e.V. Musikverein Laufelden-Plein, the MV Manderscheid e.V. and the Karibu Choir, which also gave the festival an international touch with its music from Tanzania. Of course, there was also a wide range of food and drinks.
Especially interesting for children was to see the shoeing of horses and a simulated school lesson from the old days, whereby the punishments imposed at that time were shown only symbolically.

Eckfeld, eine idyllisch gelegene Ortsgemeinde in der südlichen Vulkaneifel, veranstaltete am 1. und 2. Juli 2023 ihre 1050-Jahrfeier. Am Samstag zeigte sich das Wetter leider nicht von seiner besten Seite, aber das war bei unserem Besuch am Sonntag schon wieder vergessen. Insgesamt 4000 Besucher wussten das Fest zu schätzen.
Im Jahre 973 wurde der Ursprung des Ortes, das Landgut „Ekkiveit“, erstmals in einer Schenkungsurkunde von Kaiser Otto I. an das Kloster Echternach erwähnt. Seither hat Eckfeld politisch einige markante Stationen erlebt. 1794 wurde es Frankreich zugeordnet, 1815 auf dem Wiener Kongress dem Königreich Preußen und 1946 dem Land Rheinland-Pfalz in Deutschland.
Doch die Geschichte Eckfelds reicht weiter zurück. In der Nähe der heutigen Ortschaft wurden im 44,3 Millionen Jahre alten Eckfelder Trockenmaar unter anderem das „Eckfelder Urpferd“ und die „älteste Honigbiene der Welt“ gefunden. Sie können heute im Maarmuseum in Manderscheid besichtigt werden.
Obwohl die Ortsgemeinde Eckfeld „nur“ ca. 400 Einwohner umfasst, herrscht ein enges Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl, das einerseits offen für Innovationen ist, andererseits aber auch alte Fertigkeiten und Traditionen schätzt. Ein eigenes 100 Mbit Glasfasernetz gehört in Eckfeld schon seit über 10 Jahren zur Selbstverständlichkeit. Eine Biogasanlage, die anlässlich der Feier auch besichtigt werden konnte, sorgt für grüne Energie.
Neuerdings befindet sich am Backhaus in der Ortsmitte auch eine kostenlose Ladestation für e-Bikes, sodass Besucher problemlos mit dem Fahrrad die Umgebung erkunden können. Cafés und Ferienwohnungen in Eckfeld und Umgebung ermöglichen einen erholsamen Ferienaufenthalt.
Die 1050-Jahrfeier bot eine ideale Gelegenheit altes und zum Teil noch heute ausgeübtes Handwerk hautnah zu beobachten. Begleitet wurden diese von einem musikalischen und künstlerischen Unterhaltungsprogramm, gestaltet vom MV Eckfeld e.V. Musikverein Laufeld-Plein, dem MV Manderscheid e.V. und dem Karibu Chor, der mit seiner Musik aus Tansania dem Fest auch einen internationalen Anstrich verlieh. Natürlich gab es auch ein umfangreiches Angebot an Essen und Getränken.
Interessant war speziell für Kinder das Beschlagen von Pferden zu sehen und ein simulierter Schul-Unterricht aus alten Tagen, wobei die damals verhängten Strafen nur symbolisch gezeigt wurden.
