Chengdu 2024 Walking tour: THE PARK CITY | Crazy EVOLUTION of a Traditional Metropolis

More recently, Chengdu, like many other cities in China, has seen explosive growth in its population and economy.
The city began investing in green infrastructure more than a decade ago, including a number of wetland parks linked to the many waterways that crisscross the area.
These parks became natural sponges for filtering pollutants and a boon to birdwatchers who saw growing numbers of species calling the city home.
There are plenty of famous city parks in the world - New York’s Central Park, the Luxembourg Gardens of Paris, or São Paulo’s Ibirapuera Park, to name a few. But what Chengdu, a city of 20 million in southwestern China, wants to become world-famous for is something much bigger.
Chengdu, one of China’s largest metropolises and the capital of Sichuan Province, is building out a vast system of interconnected parks and greenways on a massive scale.
The plan is not to build parks within the city - rather, the plan is for a “city within a park.”
You can see this “Park City” plan taking shape in the Longquan Mountain Urban Forest Park, a reserve that overlooks snow-capped peaks behind glimmering skyscrapers.
With plans to grow to 1,275 square kilometres, the area will become one of the world’s largest urban park areas. Or you can see it along the Tianfu Greenway, a collection of biking and walking trails that eventually will connect hundreds of parks across the metropolitan area. Eventually, it will form the world’s largest green path network at 17,000 kilometres long.
------------------⭐⭐
The Park City plan comes at a time when cities around the world are focused on growing their park systems to improve quality of life for their residents.
As a recent paper from the Metropolis Observatory notes, greening urban areas is good for mental health, mitigates the impact of climate change, and enhances gender equality, among other upsides.
In Chengdu, the Park City plan builds on a strong foundation of existing green gems like Renmin Park, a 110-year old urban oasis where the city’s famously laid-back residents like to gather in the lakeside teahouse, stroll along flower-lined paths, and play badminton or mahjong.
Chengdu is the rare megalopolis to lie just a couple of hours from habitats supporting giant pandas and snow leopards.
The Park City plan also builds on longstanding cultural beliefs that urbanisation and nature can exist in harmony. For example, an ancient and still-functioning irrigation system engineered using nature’s own topography has supported agriculture and contained flooding on the fertile plains around Chengdu for centuries.
The system has long supported thousands of small settlements on wooded lots, known as linpan. The result, American and Chinese researchers said in a recent paper, was essentially “two thousand years of sustainable development.”
The city’s plans are meant to provide a new model for metropolises across China and, perhaps, much of the world. Instead of economic growth leading to environmental degradation, the idea is to show that improving the environment can lead to economic growth.
-------------------⭐⭐
Chengdu Mixc Mall
-------------------⭐⭐
Owned by Huarun (China Resources), the size of Chengdu MixC is now larger than Chongqing MixC and Shenzhen MixC. With a total construction area of 720,000 square meters, it currently is the largest commercial complex with the largest number of businesses in Chengdu’s city center. It consists of 4 shopping center areas, 1 five-star hotel, 2 grade A office buildings, and a central plaza.
The second phase was mostly high expected for a few food & beverage brands including Shake Shack, Taco Bell, Tim Hortons and Starbucks Reserve. Also beloved local brands like Peter’s Tex Mex newest creation (Habanero Tree) and Greybox Coffee are included.
Sports retail brands include Nike, Adidas, Air Jordan, The North Face, FOSS, Champion, Under Armour, G-Star RAW, Fila, Boy London, Puma, Li-Ning, New Balance, Vans, Converse, Onitsuka Tiger, Lee and Dickies.

if u visit Chengdu, u might as well visit Chongqing too. these 2 super megacities are only 1.5 hrs apart by high speed trains. two totally different styles megacities. both are regional centers of southwest china. Chengdu is very laid back and a well-designed metropolitan full of livable new neighborhoods. a great place to settle. and its great panda zoo is very beautiful too. Chongqing is NYC-on-steroid and it has NYC vibes. but it is a bigger version of NYC and its far cleaner & safter. it boosts one of the most stunning skyline in the world, more so than manhattan, shanghai, or hong kong. but Chongqing is not so walking friendly bc the city has too many hills and cliffs. nevertheless Chongqing is the most unique megacity in the world topology-wise.

  • @WalkEast

    @WalkEast

    打车去的,确实看了个大概,问题是我是走拍,不是车拍。我下次很有必要再在天府新区来个车拍。 走拍只能拍很小的范围。

places you mentioned are borderland regions of china. cities and interest spots over there are so spread out and far in between. travelling from one place to another in chinese borderland regions are very costly and time-consuming. you need dedicated vloggers who always have free time to accomplish that. the vlogger is filming videos for fun. he uses his spare time to film during his out-of-town IT job assignments. so he doesnt have to pay travelling expenses out of his own pocket. its very costly to travel so many places in china if no one pays for you. afterall china is a continental size country....

@@timothylee2772 china is way more developed than the North Korean dictatorship. North Korea has some ok buildings in the capital, but healthcare, social mobility, social services, and education all suck. The average salary in Chinese cities like this are like 15x the average salary of someone in Pyongyang. Chinese city videos like this cover large distances, but videos and pictures of Pyongyang cover tiny parts of the city (bc it's small) that are allowed to be released by the govt.

Being in the mountains definitely makes It a bit worse, but the aqi is tolerable - a bit better than Saigon/Hanoi/Bangkok on some days but worse than Shanghai and Guangzhou. For someone with dust allergies, I could live there, but it would be hard to stand during times when the air pollution is high. Chengdu has a ton of trees and parks though and they keep planning more, so there's fresh air in most apartment complexes. The bad part is that I'm really allergic to tree pollen and the chengdu pollen is tough to deal with lol - so just wear a mask outdoors when it gets bad or purchase some allergy medications
