I am Indian who is interested in cities, skyscrapers, infrastructure projects like airports , highways ,railway station etc...I follow these type of infrastructure projects all around the world like construction updates, new project s etc...What I want to say is,just imagine if we create a city by combining the best parts of all Indian cities ( well developed, landscaped ,have modern buildings) and create a new city. That still cannot overtake one city in china( for example chengdu city). Even after 50 years from now, india cannot beat china today. That much difference is there. The reason why people are comparing india with china is due to brainwashing by Indian government and media. They portray a 6 lane highway as a great achievement of the country .

and Indians are too self centered and selfish to create anything that benefits everyone equally. they all want good things for themselves and themselves only but at someone else's cost which is why everything public is shit in India. the public roads, public transportation, public hospitals, public schools. it's a sad state.

When citizens do comparative analysis its usually from the lens of global political sense of place and optimism about future progress which in this case is modernisation that not only entail infrastructure state policies but values like freedom of speech and advocacy which is a social good.

India's "freedom" is a negative asset. "democracy" is also why countries like Indonesia/Malaysia/Brazil fell into the middle income trap. In contrast, countries like Singapore/Taiwan/South Korea all became democratic AFTER becoming rich and developed.

Foss, I hope you'll take the time to wander thru the streets of the other side of Shanghai as well, it'd be interesting to see just how bad those poor folks have it in life as they try to exist another day. Stay safe Foss & thanks for all your wonderful walks thru-out the world!

When I visited China in August 1988, the only multistory buildings in many cities were what Russia had built. Chinese construction was still done by little men in flip-flops and shorts, clambering up ladders and hauling materials upward on shaggy ropes. Everyone was threatened by the stuff falling. The air in some cities was brown with pollution, although millions of bicycles were in use. At the Bund in Shanghai, we were approached by Chinese carrying English-language books and asking us to critique their pronunciation of the words. Remnants of the British and American 19th-century concession areas existed nearby. China looks capable of being an economic powerhouse nowadays, although I believe most of it still doesn't look as up-to-date as Shanghai.

Thank you for showing us beautiful Shanghai, a city I will never visit for obvious reasons, namely the non-stop tracking and monitoring of the person, the lack of freedom to say or do anything, without some record of it being made behind your back. There are cameras everywhere. In comparison, Mumbai (Bombay) is much better and I think that's probably why you're getting comments from there. Mumbai cleaned up a lot of its polluted air, I remember how bad it was, I worked there, but the street garbage is still a problem, no doubt. However, based on what you showed us, it looks like even that is being adressed. Shanghai demolished almost everything old, got rid of its street garbage, by the looks of it, but air pollution is still a big problem based on what I read. The question is where would you rather visit, a place that's become picture perfect by demolishing entire neighborhoods, installing cameras everywhere to track you and rate your general daily attitude or be in a vibrant, genuinely active and much more "real" city like Mumbai, garbage aside. I'd visit Mumbai first before Shanghai, if I ever travelled again.
