Chelsea Handler: Unpack Delayed Grief

Chelsea Handler (Dear Chelsea Podcast, comedian, television host, best-selling author) stops by to discuss the importance of unpacking trauma and delayed grief. She opens up about growing up in a dysfunctional home, and how the trauma of losing her older brother impacted her entire family and reinforced her commitment to spreading humor. Chelsea explains the journey of her relationship with alcohol, her recent decision to begin therapy, and her life-changing ayahuasca experience. She considers her prior fear of commitment and sense of distrust toward men and her current healthy relationship with fellow comedian Jo Koy. Chelsea reveals how not having children of her own has allowed her to show up for other people’s children, what she would do if she weren’t in comedy, and why it’s always been especially important to her to highlight other women.
Mayim breaks down craniosacral therapy and shares mental health and interpersonal guidelines for maintaining a healthy relationship in another installment of Ask Mayim Anything.
*Hey Breakers*
The camera for Chelsea is slightly shaky at times during this episode, it has been corrected as much as possible, but the content is so good, we're going with the real charm.

If the grieving not addressed properly in the right time is something that can destroy you easily, I simply cannot imagine what can be to have it inside you for more than 30 years! My bro’s suicide happened five years ago, and I’m just now (and in the most part thanks to this podcast and meditacion) beginning to deal with it and let pain and not shedded tears go to surface..Oh, virtualy hugging Chelsea! I’m the elder of six siblings. Chelsea is the little of six ones. Tricky “places” to be born. I can only say her from here “you’re such a brave human being. Thank you for never loosing your humor sense, even in the hardest moments”. Thank you Mayim & Jonathan for this funny at times but also very, very deep episode. 💜

The timing of this episode was perfect! I’m listening to it the day after Thanksgiving (highly stressful being the host). I appreciate Chelsea mentioning that she realized that others don’t always want or need to hear her opinion on everything. I recently came to the same conclusion, especially when it comes to social media. I’ve started adopting the mantra of “I’d rather be happy than “be right”.” For me that just means not interacting with every post or comment I disagree with. Im enjoying social media more and overall happier because I’m not focused on the negative replies on my feed.

Dude, YES! I did a social media fast because I realized that when I'd usually just step away and not say anything at all, I was starting to engage negatively mor and more. I stepped away for a bit but jumped back into as soon as I got on FB (let's face it. FB is a cesspool of angry people) and got that old familiar feeling of rising angry and anxiety. So, now I limit the time I spend on it significantly. Also unfollowing certain pages and people helps. I still get into it but I reign myself back in much better these days. There's a lot less trash on YT so I consider a bit of a safe haven. Lol and I'm so glad I never got invested in Twitter. That's a whole different beast.😬

My oldest brother suddenly passed away when I was eight. Three months later my dad also suddenly passed away, a week after my ninth birthday. There is A LOT of life that has happened between then and now at almost 32 years old. I'm realizing all the time that there are continually things I am learning about the true impact of those events on my life and those around me. I genuinely love who I am as a person and know how to appreciate the moments and be content even when life happens. I still have trauma, from lots of things, but my triumphs are bigger than my trauma. I don't believe that "better" means that you won't stumble or that you won't come across problems in life. It means that when you do, it doesn't destroy your world, you actively choose the coping mechanisms that are healthy and soon enough you are able to get back up quicker each time.

And all the time I come across people, including my "family members" who I am like yeah therapy would strongly help you and they just are SO resistant to going or even trying to work out a specifically problem with a trained 3rd person professional. I don't understand it. They'd rather keep the problems than try to change and that is one of the saddest tragedies to me. They have the power of choice and they choose to remain sick and to keep complaining about things they have the power to change. :(

I loved the Rashi after the show. I grew up in a Jewish household and had a brother pass from crib death at 7 months old. He was the oldest I never knew him. I also lost a sister at age 26, she was killed in a helicopter crash. She was a medi-vac nurse. I absolutely understand what Jonathan and Chelsea were both saying. Our parents truly never came back-from what I’m told, after my oldest brother died and stayed together hoping there would also be happy days on the way and then lost another daughter…it’s amazing to now look at it from a new perspective as an adult! I also just found out that my dad-is not my dad thanks to 23 and Me! Love to talk to you, about all the implications of this and also having to do with being Jewish and born from adultery!! I am grateful for your shows, you both are so fascinating to listen to💜

Ok Chelsea's viewpoint on motherhood and parenting is the same as mine. I don't want to be a mother. I don't see a problem with not wanting to reproduce. It's easier to help others. There's nothing wrong with being an aunt instead. I just agree with all of that. I'm quite selfish with my time too. And the world is quite overpopulated. A lot of people like to try to shame me or pressure me and it just doesn't work. I'm very happy with not reproducing. I also deal with people who I feel very strongly should not reproduce because it's not in the best interest for society 😂😂😂 but I digress.

I love Chelsea’s story of healing and flipping her story of grief, anger, all the things that held her back to being a positive conscious contributor to healing the collective because she did the inside work, first. It’s amazing how we’re all conditioned to play small and stuck to the old story of negativity, pain, suffering and misery when the opposite is also available for us to enJOY and live a life that’s AUTHENTIC TO US AS ADULTS yet still CONNECTED TO OUR INNER CHILD. Blessings everyone. Another awesome podcast episode that gave a ton of AHA MOMENTS. ❤

This was pretty interesting. Being a fan of Chelsea it’s nice to see a different side to her during this episode. I mean of course there’s a side to her that we all know and love that’s always there, but to see a more vulnerable side to her that really makes you feel more connected to her in a way that’s relatable and that we’re really just all only human. It makes you feel not so alone in this thing we call life in the world. All of us are on our own individual journeys at our own paces but it just goes to show you that we all go through things that affect us and we all struggle with things but at the end of the day it’s okay to not be okay because we’re blessed with the gift of tomorrow to continue on our path to try and do better.

Brilliant, beautiful, smart and funny...I describe the episode BOTH of you. I teared up when Chelsea was talking about Jose gratitude. I've been a fan for a long time and have had a similar journey of exploration of recovery. It wasn't inspiring reminder to stay focused

Omg!!!! I used to watch the news all the time and thought I was so smart. Therefore, I needed to tell everyone my opinions and that they should think like me. Now I seldom share my opinion. I’m so much happier now! I’m much more accepting of others.
