JJ Bull, Jon Mackenzie and Reuben Pinder are here to talk about some football.
There was a surfeit of sackings in the Premier League over the weekend, so the boys rake over the coals of Graham Potter’s six months at Chelsea and the four year Brendan Rodgers era at Leicester City.
Manchester City battered Liverpool when it looked like Liverpool might be about to derail The Citizens title bid.
That defeat puts the 2020 Premier League winners in real trouble when it comes to qualifying for the Champions League, with Liverpool behind Brighton and Brentford in the standings as those standings stand.
That race for the Champions League is being led by Newcastle United and Manchester United, with The Magpies overcoming The Red Devils at St James’ Park over the weekend.
And speaking of corvids, we discuss whether a collection of intelligent crows should be allowed to watch a game of football if they had a ticket, as well as some other mad nonsense involving seagulls.
Oh and AC Milan vs Napoli plus Bayern München vs Borussia Dortmund.
This episode of the Tifo football podcast is presented by JJ Bull and produced by Steve Hankey.

Reuben slotted in to the podcast as seamlessly as Roberto De Zerbi did at Brighton. Great podcast once again.
Love Ruben, and all the boys. Disappointed in Jon's anti Rodgers bit. He wasn't backed at all for three windows, and didn't get tons of money before that. Still got two 5th place finishes (our highest ever outside of winning), a European semi final, and our first ever FA cup which brought tears to our eyes. Yes he had to go, it was totally not working and it hadn't for a long time, laregely due to the lack of investment and maybe the natural shelf life of a manager these days, but he deserves a respectful send off for all he achieved.

A lot of the signings he did make were terrible and he should have been sacked long ago. You can use the lack of sognings as an excuse but Leicester still have some fantastic players and a squad that is just too good to get relegated. Player for player they're much better than the teams around them so the onus is on Rodgers. That FA cup win was 2 years ago. Considering Ranieri got sacked the year after winning a bloody league title, it's baffling he was given so much time. There really is no room for sentiment when relegation is on the line.

City sometimes go under the radar because people have become accustomed to them being a successful team, but they really are an absolutely cracked team with an insanely good manager. To do this for 5-6 years without ever falling off to the extent of Liverpool an Chelsea, really is something special

It's the money. City can afford the transfer fees and the wages, and if a player doesn't work out, they can afford to replace them immediately. Yes, just having money is not enough as ManU and Everton have demonstrated, but not having it is precisely what has constrained Liverpool in refreshing their squad more proactively.
Reuben is an excellent addition to the pod
For the show to be this weird without Joe is truly an astounding accomplishment 😂😂😂😂
What I will say about Newcastle is that I wonder how they will deal with European football next season. We see lots of teams struggle with hitting that balance of domestic and continental games. Newcastle will definitely be keen to buy from squad depth
@andrewcharlton6080
Жыл бұрын
A lot of Newcastle fans saying the same thing, without 5 or 6 top quality additions I’d expect us to struggle with the number of games. Even with those players we’d have to rely on a fairly small European squad in Europe because we lack good quality home grown at club players at the minute, that’ll translate into too many games for our best players. The owners planned 2-3 years for the European push and that would have given us time to build the youth setup to improve the home grown player options. Even if next season is a little tough it’s worth getting for the CL money, we can agree larger sponsorship deals and can attract better players. We might be a little up and down for a few years but every year our squad should improve.

@@TonyTynebridge. FFP still won’t let us be crazy with the spending. I’d imagine the budget will be £150m, maybe £200m max and I’m probably being optimistic. That sounds like loads but look at the prices being quoted for some of the players were interested in, Tierney £30m+ Maddison £50-60m, Diaby £60m+. That’s £150m there, they are good players but we’d need another 2 or 3 at least and we won’t have much more to spend. We still won’t get much for player sales either. The future is looking good but next season might be tough.

I’ve gotta back Cucurell here. He has been mid for us, here and there really good. But when he was at Brighton he was their stand out player for me. His attacking progressive passing was direct, quick, and accurate. Don’t remember much of his defending tbh but I saw him to be a very very good player. Like all the rest of the players in the team, even the best ones like Reece, have fallen off a bit this season. Thiago silva has been the only one really that has held his form because he’s just a beast.

At least skipper Jon McKenzie has (possibly naive) optimism in the bees. All Brentford has to do is stay afloat long enough to build up warchest. Enough cash and a willingness to continue to adapt, and their smarts can keep them in the hunt for years to come.

Great dynamics on this podcast episode. Keep it up 🙌
In Leicester's "attacking" shape, Arsenal still managed to limit them to one shot in the entire game at the King Power. That dig I just made was more attacking than Brendan Rodgers' play has been in the last few months. I think he's a good coach, but this sacking is much more easier for me to get my head around than Graham Potter.

A perfectly good bird podcast interspersed with observations about football matches. You guys need a bird food tier list
Potters team never score enough goals, why 1 lack of a good forward, 2 the possession based passing build up is slow allowing defences to set up. De Zerbi at Brighton recognised the good possession Brighton had but saw it was too slow. De Zerbi coached the Brighton team to speed passes up in the last 3rd. He has also coach players who were goal shy to increase confidence in front of goal. Now players such as March are scoring more in a month than they did in a season.
City won 2 league titles and reached a champions league final and semi final which they narrowly lost to madrid. Potter had great players, not having a number 9 is not an excuse

Quality analysis of the league leader’s game
More Rueben, excellent addition not just on Palace matters.
On Manchester United's buildup, it was far better with eriksen and casemiro. Obviously with De gea's inability, and Varane's inconsistency in building up there was some issues, but it was legitimately solid and a viable way to play with the personnel. The lack of deep midfield depth is killing us, particularly players who are press resistant and can comfortably receive the ball from the centre backs. This is the reason why Bruno played deeper and mctominay was pushed further forward, because Mctominay not only can't receive the ball and turn, but actively shys away and hides behind the opposition forwards rather than showing, so you HAD to take him out of that situation. It's the same with Fred when he's deep. Also on whether Mctominay is misprofiled etc. I just think he's simply just too flawed for this level, whatever position you put him in. Also Reuben is correct on Mctominay being used as a political pawn TL:DR United desperately need midfield depth and a new keeper. Ten hag's ideas themselves are good, but as soon as the first choice midfield is out, the players aren't good enough to make the ideas function

Trent Alexander Arnold just can't defend well. His positioning is very poor. He consistently makes bad decisions off the ball. At least that's what I understood from watching their games. Yes, this has been accentuated by the fact that Liverpool as a team are struggling, but he is definitely a part of the problem and not just a fallout.
Around the what? Globe? You're gonna need a radius measurement for that claim 🤣
Everyones been acting like this United team doesn't currently have Weghorst, no midfield depth, a poor RB and De Gea in goal and havent been overperforming. The media pushing "title challengers" with that squad was just setting them up so when they fail they can all spend weeks tearing them down. One striker injury and a few midfield injuries and youve got weghorst (0 goals in the prem since jan) and mctominay starting (at cm where hes constantly hiding). Plus there are no technical players in that starting 11. 0 ball retention and constantly tried risky passes that never came off.
