I dated a guy named Dave when I was 17. My mom had a rule that we always had to announce when there was company coming over and to announce when they are at the front door. I'd holler up the stairs "Dave's here" whenever I'd have him over. And every time Every Single time I would hear back "Dave's not here, man" in my Mothers voice and then hear my dad and her laughing.

My sister's and I used to listen to this and one time mom heard it coming in from work. We ran to stop it but mom said, "NO! Leave it on!" And BUSTED up with laughter to high heaven. From that day on we laughed about "Dave's not here!" Nearly every time we visited. We just lost mom in August at 81 but what a precious memory to carry and share with my sisters and my Dad too. ✌️😎 i miss mom already. Sleep on sweet mama ✌️🥹

My proudest moment as a parent; I was downstairs and I heard daughter #1 bang on the upstairs bathroom door. Daughter #2 (in the bathroom) says, who is it? Without any hesitation whatsoever, daughter #1 one says, "it's me Dave, open up, I got the stuff." I just sat in my chair with a smile on my face. Another generation passed onto.

As cousin Red said, "Ho-ly sheep shit!" What I love the most about this routine is the comedic timing. The premise of the joke is shit simple -- a very good thing -- putting the comedy squarely on Cheech's and Chong's shoulders. I can only think to compare this to Abbot and Costello's "Who's On First" in terms of timing.

Can't believe it's been (almost) 50 years. It seems that this played longer (?), although the memory is filtered through beer and some decent (by present day thc levels -- not even close) bud. In my friends', Servantez, basement, along with several other dudes and dudettes on a weekend night -- chillin' and listening to this and some tunes while downing some cold beers and some smoke through a wine & ice filled bong, til the gang split up -- marriage, the Navy, cop shop, etc. made their calls and we, for the most part went our separate ways. This still makes me smile and remember. Glad newer generations are enjoying it.

There was an episode of "Nash Bridges" (co-starring Marin) where Chong played a hotel clerk. Marin's a police detective, and he and his partner are in the hotel lobby looking for a suspect. Marin's and Chong's characters know each other, and at one point, Marin asks Chong "hey, you ever see our old friend Dave?" And sure enough, Chong deadpans, "Dave's not here, man." Best. Callback. Ever.

My parents were super strict, fundamentalist Southern Baptists - they sent me and my big sister to private Christian school, we went to church 4x per week, twice on Sundays, Wednesday and Friday nights; and the only kids we were allowed yo socialize with were from church and school and our cousins. One of our older cousins gave my big sister a cassette tape with this sketch and other Cheech and Chong bits he had recorded by putting one of those old mono cassette recorders in front of his parents hi-fi speakers. Our dad found the tape and had us sit on the couch in the living room with our mom sitting in a chair looking at us like she was SO ashamed of us. “You two are gonna sit there and watch how it hurts your mother and I knowing you two listen to this filth,” our father yelled. My sister and I were already crying when our dad started the tape. “Dave’s Not Here” was the first sketch. Dad didn’t make it 30 seconds before he started to laugh and mom started laughing next. We listened to the entire 30 minute tape laughing as s family for the first time I could remember.

I have a camper at a campground, everyone has a sign on theirs stating their names. My name sign has three parts that each has it's own light inside with it's own separate on/off switch. The top part says "Daves" , the middle "Not" , and the bottom says "Here". I light each one according to what I want to convey to everyone: "Daves" says that it's my place, and I light the other two respectively to show whether or not I am there at the moment. Everyone comments on the sign.

This was the hight of comedy between my friends and I. We would get high and laugh so hard that we cried tears. This was the 80’s and the world didn’t look any better to us than it does to the kids today but the kids today all think that they are special and that the world owes them something. We weren’t told we were special, we were told that life is gonna be tough and that it was up to us to make the best out of it cuz no one was gonna bail us out. I think that’s the difference between us and kids today. Kids today think they are owed college, a job, and they fail to understand that no one owes you anything.

I heard somewhere, maybe an interview, that this was the first bit they ever recorded and that Chong came up with the "Dave's not here" line out of the blue. The skit was supposed to go in another direction but they went with it and this is the end result. Too funny. That episode of Miami Vice, where Cheech makes a guest appearance and they go into a shop looking for a guy named Dave and Chong is there instead and tells them Dave's not here...Cheech and Ching fans got it, for everyone else it just sailed on by.

I did this with a friend at a talent show in High School. Mind you, this was an Iowa town with 1,000 people and the school was K-12, and the show director begged me to say *I got the loot *. I would not be censored though, but I did compromise to allow the emcees to announce the local bank was robbed, and I drew a giant dollar sign on the bag I had. It was perfect. I even wrote in my own ending to where I walked off stage without the bag and the Chong character stuck his arm outside the door and grabbed it. I figured it's even funnier if that was his plan the whole time. It was excellent.

My friends had a severely handicapped son named Dave and sometimes I would come and read to him, perform music, watch silly movies, etc. ..... Being that he traveled between parents every week, I would call sometimes to see about reading (etc.) and one time, one of them called me back to say "Yeah, um, Dave's not here! .... But, ......"

I think it's just outrageously cool that the humor, the music and all the other cultural stuff that turned the world upside down when I was in college ('69-'74) still gets a rise out of people 40+ years later. After all, we didn't get off on things from the '20s and '30s. well, not much, anyway. I was a history major so I did sometimes, but not like the way this still resonates. Far out, man! Outta' sight! Oh to be 19 again!

+geezusispan VERY GOOD POINT! The influence of these greats on Cheech and Chongs' work is pretty obvious, and I thank you for pointing this out. Still, are they not "exceptions that prove the rule?" My point was just how rare it is that art lasts long enough to ring our bells generations later. These guys are all still outstanding, are they not? It's an honor to me to have lived long enough to remember at least some of them in their original glory!

Good one but jazz hits from around 1922 still hold up better than the Satisfaction does because the stones hits is just a sing along.. Listen to Louis Armstrong's recordings from the 20's.. Of course you have to like music

geezusispan ..Hey. ...... And ahaha, I said "jazz hits from around 1922".. Al Jolsons mammy actually has a pretty good melody. Satisfaction mainly has a great guitar hook-riff which makes the tune great but is kinda hard to play instrumentally.. But I guess you are saying all pop music sucks compared to jazz or classical..lol.. There were lots of instrumental jazz hits years ago

geezusispan ..Hey.. Yes . I watched the Ken Burns shows first aired around 2001 and again this year.. My parents both played piano and my mom was a piano major and of course the high school jazz band I was in we played Glen Miller instrumentals.. I thought Satchmo was an Uncle tom too until I realized he risked his career and life for the Arkansas protests in 1957.. Dave Brubeck crying over a black guy getting branded decades earlier was powerful stuff for me.. Duke was great but too classical for me and not enough swing but he may have been a better composer than Gershwin..
