I just had an idea for a video. Your choice of hardware for Les Pauls. From best to worst. Pickups bridges tuners etc. Opening the playing portion of the review with Irin Maiden was awesome. I was singing along with it.

Whatever comes, that’s the charm with Gibson. Like the old Marshall amps. They differ in sound,feel and look.

There are very few custom shops that have "the sound" but this is one of them, absolute and unbelievable GEM of a guitar. It sounds just like my favorite albums.

Exactly ! Why cover up a beautiful finished top ? I take all the pickguards off but I don’t play radical enough to damage the top either .

That top.. wow

Good looking R9. Interesting top without jumping out too much. I prefer pick guards fitted, too. Gives it more of an old jazz guitar feel. I know it's more of a 1959 appropriate thing to have an ABR-1 type bridge but I worry that the posts that are screwed into the top are a bit spindly (Not that I've a problem with similar looking ones on a 70s LP Deluxe).

It really is.

I don't usually like the honey or lemon bursts because its just to light of a finish. This one i like because it is a darker shade. If im going to have a guitar with analin dye on it i prefer it heavy . Whether its grain filled or not. I was gettimg the Greeny vibes or Slash Vibes from this R9 also. I say no pick guard. The second Studio that i bought as a result of watching this show the Vintage Dirty Cherry refinished came with a pickguard not installed. But it had no screws. I could not decide if I wanted to put it on or not. I polled friends and family also a Gibson fan site and most said no pickguard. It looks good with or without. But its be refinished to nicely to cover it up. When you started talking about what you like about this top and you pointed to the side without a pickguard it almost looked like some tried to scribe their name or some lettering on it. Almost looks like it says Ben. I almost forgot to thank the viewer who did the new guitar day purchase for sharing his guitar with us. Congratulations and enjoy.

That you're doing detailed reviews of these types of instruments is commendable. I do have to wonder how many of the people dropping six grand on a replica of a vintage guitar actually hit the road and PLAY in front of live audiences. The rusty hardware on my instruments came from my own sweat and booze!!!

My son got the LesPaul Slash version of that Lemonburst. Love your show. I just bought a Guild Starfire V at 71 years old. Semi-hollow. I had it Plecked at Sweetwater. Suggest you review some modern Guilds!

I own a 2021 R9. It has a much darker back and so it also has much heavier binding bleeding. But I love my R9 😍

Tip from 'delete department.' If your Les Paul top is not damaged by the pickguard hardware mounting screw, the two remaining screw holes, at the neck and the bout edge can be plugged by a truss rod mounting screw. This cleans things up and if you ever want to remount the pickguard the holes are still there. "Perfection is nothing left to take away."

Handsome guitar! Reminds me a lot of the gorgeous 2005 Standard l got in December. :) The top on mine isn’t quite as fancy as this, but it’s got a beauty all of its own and it moves like crazy in the light. Oh, and l didn’t even pay £2k for it!

Nice Choice Frank! A R9 Murphy Lab, just has a unique feel. Not just about looks. Smell amazing too. Gibson gets you now with, smell, tone, vibrations, feel, looks plus when your playing the guitar with a zipper shirt, doesn’t matter anymore. I have not tried but I bet the R9 taste good too. I would not trade mine for anything. When you play a standard 50s USA, then play the R9, ruined for life. I keep saying R9 but it was a struggle to choose it over the R8. Not a fan of the R0 (NECK) at all.

I still don’t get the VOS/Aged finishes! If I buy a new guitar I want it to look new! Go figure! Lol

that Lemon burst is freaking beautiful. Question, as it's a 'custom' why does it not have the diamond inlay on the headstock? I was disappointed with the dirty tones. The cleans were nice, perhaps it was the amp?

That top and that satin finish Whooo boy! As soon as you opened the case I said "I'll take it!" lol.

I wish I could afford one like this! These sound just like the real deal. Gibson Custom shop guitars are the best. That’s a sexy guitar.

Hey Trogly! How would compare the feel & sound of the R9s vs the Greeny Standard that came out last year?

A transparent pick guard or a fancy "binded" one. Or a Fenderey tortoise shell one that'd move in the light

I got a 59 reissue dirty lemon and a new lp standard custom color 23 but let’s be honest the custom shop is much better then a standard and you definitely can hear the difference.Dont get me wrong the lp standard is badass but the CS is just better!

Does anyone know how Gibson gets the specs for R9’s? Are they using a CMM to collect data points from an original? We just did that for a pair of early Telecasters, and the results were incredible. Far better than having just taken hand measurements. The results are accurate to within half a thousandth.

Not really what I'd call a 'lemon-burst' but still a damn nice looking R9. Got a 'like' for playing Maiden (that riff can be a tad tricky & you really need a Tube Screamer or something lol)
