Here it is... the FIRST Les Paul Reissue Made*** Why all the asterisks? Well... while the title of 'first' is true, Gibson also made a few reissues as special dealer orders and other 'half' reissues before this such as the Strings 'n Things, Standard 82/83, Heritage 80, Leo's LP, Les Paul KM, and Guitar Trader models. This is the first Les Paul Reissue that was not a custom order, but was being offered as a new line up called 'Les Paul Reissue.' This is actually from the 'pre-run' which used a vintage correct 9 xxxx serial number instead of the later 'first run' which followed a Y XXXX format with Y= the year the reissue was made - this format continued for nearly 10 years. (For example: 1983 being 3 xxxx.) Mark Knopfler of Dire Straights used #6 from this run of guitars on the Money for Nothing Album and still owns it today.
Not only is this guitar incredibly historically significant, but DANG - it's got the TONE and playability too. I definitely put this one in my top 5 LP I've ever owned category. I'll never forget this one. Gorgeous top on it too!

Hello. I built this guitar when I worked for Gibson in the 80's. According to my personal ledger, it was built on July 25th, 1983. Also, I can assure you that just because it has the 9 0001 serial number, it was not the first one made. There were many, many made before this one. I have the records to prove it. I'd love to discuss the facts with you sometime. P.S. - The FL initials belong to my Dad, Floyd Leonard, who was not the builder, but the Sound Booth Inspector. I was the builder. - Randy Leonard

This is what I was referring to when I posted on a previous review regarding the top and finishing. The top is a beautiful example of a higher grade of wood. Something you’d expect to see on a guitar of that caliber. But the sound of those pick-ups are just incredible. That’s the sound I think of when I think Les Paul. Also, I’m glad you explained the serial number. Something I may not have considered as an original. But wow, this one definitely has a that tone. Once again, a wonderful find and example of some of the many different runs made by Gibson. That was a very in-depth review. More of a dissection I’d say. Kind of a guitar autopsy. Great work. Thanks!

My cousin and I were guitar store browsing in Houston back in the early 80's and there were two Guitar Trader Les Paul flametops in a glass case in the store, consecutive serial numbers. They had the baddest and widest flame figuring in the tops I have ever seen in my life. To this day I have never seen seen better looking tops, ever. Ace Frehley's flame top that was sold a few years ago was close.

As a starving college student in Chicago in the early '80s I was a subscriber to Guitar Trader's "Vintage Guitar Bulletin" from Red Bank, N.J. which I think was mailed every other month. I followed with rabid interest all the steps leading up to the production of those Guitar Trader Les Pauls -- the introduction of the idea, the section of the tops, etc. I remember the price, $5K, which seemed to me like a monstrous sum. But wow. Cool that you saw them in person.

The 1983 les Paul standard was a fantastic guitar. Their are the hertiage 83 les paul reissues but the standard issue les Paul standed from 1983 Is also killer and I have heard a few difftent people talk about how the closest they ever got to jimmy page tone was with their tim shaw loaded 1983 les Paul standard . There is something about the combination of tim shaw's and the wood Gibson was using in 1983

It’s my opinion that no instrument should ever be cast away into the case. Only to be admired. They’re built to be played and play I would. This les Paul is right up my alley. Unfortunately I just don’t have the money. But one can dream though. Thanks for showing it. I love that it definitely looks like the peter Greene les Paul. I had a Standard 82 with a quilted top. From what I understand, they were all quilted. They were made at the Parsons Street Kalamzoo plant, some of the last guitars from that factory. The storey goes......that after the Heritage 80 series , the workers at the Kalamazoo plant wanted to show the Nashville workers how to build a proper '59 ( I imagine that some of these people in Kaalamazoo may have been the same as workers that built guitars , including LP's in 1959). Mine unfortunately had the "Gibson Smile" . Still, it was a piece of Gibson history.

The finish on that guitar is called Honey Sunburst, and it has amber added to the normal clear coat. The switch knob is yellow, and the knobs have some yellow added to the normal gold knobs. There never was any red. The amber they used is basically the same as the burst color on the finish they called Harvest Gold that was an option for the Customs around 82-83. I've got a Standard 83 and a Harvest Gold Custom from 83.

People would put two switch covers on there guitar for identification purpose in case of theft or loss. But usually an initial was on the back of the top one.

Love this guitar, however I Will not pay the asking price, however I Will pay $2750, if a Trogly t-shirt and sleep pants set is thrown in. I could also use a few lessons. Thanks Trogly Love this show!
