Cheapest Smart Trainer Bunch Ride: Zwift on a Budget

Спорт

Daily Lama EP60. I take the cheapest smart trainer for a spin on the largest Zwift bunch ride - the HDR. The Elite QUBO Digital Smart B+ unit holds up really well for automatic resistance changes. I'm growing fond of it - It's the little smart trainer that could! Remember to hit SUBSCRIBE to support this KZread channel: bit.ly/3aUph9W
UPDATE Bluetooth fixed tonight. The trainer now has Bluetooth. I may have flashed the wrong firmware when I first plugged it in.... either way... all sorted now. Firmware should be 136. You can check this using the app "LightBlue" on IOS... or even the Wahoo Fitness app will scan/see/report details on it. Remember to connect Bluetooth first after powering up the QUBO.

    based on your review I ordered this and received it tonight. my first Zwift experience was difficult. The resistance just wasn't working. After an hour or so of fumbling around it turned out it was paired incorrectly to the pc. I had to pair the trainer to the FE-C option then I heard the resistance motor kick in. prior to that I was spinning out 50x34 120 rpm and showing 200 watts.... after pairing correctly it was spot on. This unit is fantastic for the price. I can't wait to dive deeper into Zwift. Indoor training is no longer boring, and I can tell I will push myself harder with this trainer. Thanks for taking the time to do this review, it was very helpful in my purchase decision.

    COVID update; I’ve had one of these for 4 years, still working fine. Not as accurate as the $1k units, but I like the compact design and the convenience of a wheel on trainer. I use this with an iPad linked to a 40 inch tv, with an iPhone running the companion act. Full set up around $500. I do group rides, training programs, etc. but I don’t race. Has worked fine for all, resistance reflects the ride I am on, and does a reasonable job of replicating an outdoor ride. It does seem to slightly over estimate watts at the low end and slightly more underestimate watts at the higher end (anywhere above 300 w for me) compared to similar efforts outside. All in all has proven durable and a great value for the money

    Just some information on the P1, P2 and P3 values for people who want to perform a manual calibration: 1. P1 refers to high slopes, P2 medium slopes, P3 flat 2. If the trainer brakes too much, increase the values; if it brakes too poorly, decrease the values So, if you feel the trainer is too heavy at 0%, gradient (Flats) increase P3 (I suggest you increase it a little, like 10-20 points, then try again; if it is not enough, increase it again) Remember at the end to select to "send the map to the trainer", so those values will work also for Zwift and TrainerRoad.

    Owned this trainer now for 2 weeks..I must admit it's pretty nice for what I paid (365 dollars shipped) after about 40 min of riding, I would hear a small squeal. Touched the tire, and it was hot..I am going to make sure everything is aligned correctly. I had ZERO issues with bluetooth. Download the App, it provides the option between Ant or bluetooth. So if you dont go through the setup process in the app..all depending what the unit had when it left factory. Works great, just worried about durability. That squeal is questionable...but it's completely gone after I havent touched it in a week and left it unplugged. I might get a small fan and have it directed at the CPU, see if that helps.

    I’ve loved having this trainer for the past 10 months. Recently I’ve had issues where the trainer locks into transmitting a set power no matter the input. My first thought was to attempt a firmware update since I haven’t done that yet and your recent Garmin video reminded me I should do that. I can’t seem to figure out how to do that with this unit. Wondering if you have done it on yours and if so how you may have done this. I will likely raise a ticket with Elite this week as well it’s happening intermittently and resolves itself after the unit shuts off. Thanks. I love your videos appreciate all the work you put into them.

    Hi Shane. Great video, thanks for all the videos, very helpful. Looking at a smart trainer and not sure whether to go with this plus power meter (something under $1,000aud - pioneer, stages) or to ditch Power meter and just get a Kickr. I like the idea of direct drive and not having extra tyre wear but power meter could be useful outside although I prefer to just ride for fun outside and plan to use Zwift for intervals/structure sessions. I've just spent ages reading through every comment so pretty sure you haven't answered this yet, so hopefully not wasting time for you answering again. Thanks again for your videos and hopefully this isn't too old of a video to revive the comments!

    I bought the Elite QUBO Digital Smart B+ cause I watched this video and found a great deal $350 usd + shipping, 2day $400 out the door. I was having a real issue and contacted support and no one could help me, my issue was the resistance was to strong and I could not get the watts and cadence up. I'd seen others that were having the opposite problem with it showing too much power, I wish that was my issue. Anyway the way I solved it was after starting you course and after you start peddling in the IOS app and I assume android app if they have one, scroll to the right to the actions pane, look for the resistance up and down arrows, for me clicked down a couple of times and went from like 60 watts to 120watts. I think my ftp will go from 60 to 120 as well after a retest. With the above setup I was using the ANT+ and that worked, how ever a week later I tested the bluetooth setup and had issue like others with the watts being super high. Thanks Shane for the Video.

  • @paulhatcher951
    @paulhatcher9518 ай бұрын

    I've used one of these on Zwift for the past few years. Things to watch out for are ... 1. It needs internal maintenance. You need to grease the internal motor/magnet mechanism. Otherwise it dries out and ceases up. 2. As said in the review the power accuracy is pretty poor. So for accurate power you need sepate bike based power meter. 3. The resistance reaction time is very slow becuase it has to operate a motor to move the magnet. So forget thirty second intervals in ERG mode. It'll take that long to adjust the power. 4. Anyway, you shouldn't really be using ERG in Zwift ;)

    Shane, Any tips on how to keep the noise level down on the Elite Qubo's ? (my trainer is getting LOUD, unlike your new one which is what I used to experience) I cant get the Elite-IT crew to respond on their forum, so I'm searching for ANYONE with some experience in working with these over time. Is there a manual?

    Anyone have creaking noise issues? I bought a very similar model (Qubo Digital Interactive - $400 USD) that look pretty much the same as one on Shane's video. It has made creaking noises every time I rode it especially when I'm riding hard.

    Hi love your stuff, I was going to buy a smart trainer to use on zwift,I was just wondering what trainer would you recommend? is it worth saying up a bit more and going for a neo? I have a power meter on my bike already so I don't need it to do that but I do want the best one for zwift.

    Hey Shane, I bought one of these largely on the strength of this video and generally I love it. I'm not the most powerful rider so it's great for me, save for only one issue: bluetooth dropouts with the Zwift iPad app. I've watched all your videos to try and work out a solution, but to no avail. Just this morning I had 24 dropouts in a ten minute warm up. It seems ridiculous. I've got an ANT+ dongle coming in the post now which is my final throw of the dice before I contact Elite directly. Incidentally these dropouts do not affect my Wahoo Tickr HRM, only RPM and wattage readings from the trainer.

  • @gplama

    @gplama

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hmmm. 24 in 10 minutes is 24 more than you'd like to see i bet. :) Just to rule out transmission/signal strength, have you tried putting the iPad right next to the trainer? I know it's not that practical, but it'd be handy to troubleshoot that side of things and rule it in/out. I've found Bluetooth to be pretty good.... but.... there's a lot that can go wrong with the signals in the 2.4Ghz range.

  • @nicholastaylor4437

    @nicholastaylor4437

    I hadn't tried that directly, but i've just repeated that 10 minute warm up with the iPAD on the ground right next to the drive unit. Exactly the same, 24! The thing is that when I use the Elite app there are no BT dropouts as far as I can see. Incidentally, Wahoo Tickr HRM never drops out either, even in Zwift when my RPM plunges to zero. Perhaps the trainer doesn't play very nicely with Zwift over BT? The other day I switched the Wi-Fi router channel to 1 to try and improve matters. Nothing works, hence the purchase of the dongle. I like the iPAD setup on the handlebars, but this level of unreliability with Zwift is unsustainable, or at least, bloody annoying!

    That's an interesting one with only Zwift not playing ball. If you've got the chance, pull down an app called LightBlue Explorer, connect to your QUBO trainer with that, and find the firmware version. FW 136 I believe is the correct one.... well... it was last time I booted up my QUBO trainer.

    Shane- excellent video (as always). Picked up this unit last week and man was I impressed. You hit all the major points (both positive and negative) on the mark. What a game changer smart trainers are on zwift. Quick question- how big a deal is it if the roller is a little off center? I noticed my tyre tread marks are a little off to one side. I plan to try and re-center the roller but wasn't sure how big a deal not having it centered initially was. P.s. Saw you in watopia last night for a brief moment. Thanks for the ride on!

    Hi Shane, I bought this trainer based on your recommendation a few months ago and have been loving it so far! However, I always seem to have a creaking noise on the Seat-stay or rear area (Too tight or too loose?). Now I'm worried about sprinting or actually getting off the saddle to push watts. Am I really going to snap my carbon bike? Or are they much tougher than I think on any trainer. Being able to swing the bike side to side on the road vs fixed rear wheel on the trainer with my body and momentum still rocking a locked-in bike has me worried. I'm one of those who only have one bike for everything . Otherwise I am considering buying a cheaper Single speed bike and utilize the ERG mode for sprint sessions. Thoughts??

    Hi, question!? I have the Rotor 3D+ cranks (power meter built in the cranks) it uses ant+ to connect to my Garmin edge 1030 and displays my power. When indoors I also connect a speed sensor to my wheel and use my dumb trainer. I want to zwift but don’t want to pay top price for a smart trainer as I only train indoors during winter months. My question is can I zwift using a modern iPad and connect this turbo to to it with Bluetooth, also can I use my power meter still with its ant+ signal? I’m aware iPads don’t receive ant+ but is there a way around it with my Garmin unit and this turbo trainer?? Thank you 🤓⚡️
