    Going back 20 years when I could shoot! I was using a Lanber (badly) for DTL. For some reason, the trigger failed, and a club member handed me his gun to complete the remaining stands. This gun was like a fine-tuned instrument that did whatever I wanted it to do. Later I discovered it was a £1,000 Beretta (20 years ago). Now some people can shoot anything, but that gun showed me how much difference the gun can make to your performance.

    Perhaps for part-2 you could close the price gap and compare some of the new £800.00ish Turkish guns etc against pre-loved Pidge's and 525's.

    There is so much attention payed to wood and engraving. I believe there's a hole in the market for a high quality but unengraved action, receiver and barrels with well balanced polymer furniture. A sub $2000 silver pigeon with no frills would probably be a real winner. And most machine done engraving is a bit like putting lipstick on a pig anyways so save the consumer a bit if cash and get them into a higher quality firearm.

  • @jbrunet5562

    @jbrunet5562

    I agree, I'd rather have attention paid to the action and balance than embellishments. Machine engraving, to me, is everything wrong with mass production: a facsimile of the individual's skill in production. I don't go so far as to say they used to make things better, there is a lot of garbage produced in every era in time forgot, but the effort to make it look like someone spent hours personalizing a gun is disingenuous. I, personally, would rather pay for a nicer functioning firearm than a firearm with fake engraving.

    Thank you for your work and time, I love this! I bought a couple of Tri Star Upland Hunters from Walmart last year, one in 20 and one in 12. I've always loved doubles, started out on side by sides back in the day. Unfortunately had to sell it, and not having a lot of money the Tri Star was a great pick. Thank you again! Maine USA

    I paid about $400 for my TriStar over/under later last year. Looks like it was in the £300 range at the time. I have had no trouble out of mine and it came with 5 chokes and a decent built-in recoil pad. No adjustable comb, though. I'm in my 50's and I just took up clay shooting so I don't expect to ever compete or even be good enough to. But I enjoy doing it and at the end of the day that's all that matters. Whether it's trap, skeet or five stand I thoroughly enjoy getting to pull the trigger and bust clays.

    Obviously you don't watch Olympic shooting sports that use shotguns... tough to find a Browning being used there. 65% Perazzi, 25% Beretta, 5% Krieghoff, 3% Caesar Guerini, 2% Everything else. Is much closer to the truth.

    I dont agree with the comment Rizzini being a poor gun maker. I have a Browning 525, 725 and I have a Rizzini BR110 Sporter which was over 3000 euro new. It's a beautiful gun and is right up there with my Brownings. And I've owned a Berreta 686 and Lanber Gold Deluxe Sporter. The Lanber was an amazing gun for the money and there are plenty of them still around. Testiment to their build quality. I know you sell Browning but you are far too biased.

    Well put together vid...For 200 quid ($400AUD) that is a ridiculously inexpensive entry level gun (Not even half of the basic weekly wage here in Australia) However the difference between price and actual "value" is very apparent when you look at the Browning's etc. Then there is "resale" value. If you look after your Browning / Mirokou / Beretta, over time you will generally recover most of the purchase price, so the initial financial pain of investment is largely negated.

    As one of the other viewers stated you should be more careful when you disparage any Rizzini as a "Cheap" gun. As you know there are three well known companies still making Rizzinis. I.Rizzini company makes guns under the F.A.I.R. moniker and whose guns start at around $1,200 in the U.S are basic but quality made guns. B. Rizzini a step up make some guns that are beautiful higher quality guns with some very nice wood and engraving imported by Rizzini USA. F.lli Rizzini makes very high quality Best guns.

    So the cheap gun has 2 inch shorter barrels which reduced weight and then you have barrel weights and stock weights in the high end guns. Add 2 inches of barrel, stock weights, external barrel weights and a limbsaver recoil pad you have a well balanced cheap gun and a bunch of leftover money.

    I started many many years ago with a Winchester 101 26” barrels. After about a 1000 rounds I could not open up the gun. Finally, after applying tremendous pressure the gun finally opened up. I looked over the gun but could not figure out what went wrong. After inspecting the empty hulls I noticed that there was a gouged line from the primer to the edge of the brass. What happened is that the firing pins hit the primers and remained embedded in the primer locking the gun up. I sold the gun and purchased a Beretta 682 and never had another issue. You should mention that more expensive guns can and will withstand far more wear and tear.

    Purpose, price and frequency are the perfect metrics for determining which gun is best for you. Most people have a budget so it's amusing when someone buys an expensive firearm they use 3 times a year at most, but buying a cheap gun and taking it out every week expecting it to last a lifetime is unrealistic. It comes down to how much you enjoy shooting and what you want to get out of it.

    Functionally the same; stock, fore end and two barrels. All go bangy bang and put shot in the air. However, just listen to the quality of the action closing on the expensive guns. Functionally the same, built entirely differently. Then add £500 for the brand!

    I'm very happy with my 6 year old Baikal that I got last year for £120 from a bloke who'd lost his licence and was paying an RFD to store it. It's multi choke, has a barrel selector, beautiful wood and if I miss with both barrels I can turn it round and break it and the ejectors will fire the empties at the clay with about the same ferocity as the shots. Only issue is I don't think it's suitable for steel shot. If I had to pay much more than £200-£300 for a gun I wouldn't be able to shoot.

    David - enjoyed the video. Any chance you could do a video on what gun to start juniors shooting. Had terrible advice if honest. Was advised to buy a 20ga junior semi auto but the problem was the kids struggled to hold the weight between the hands. Was then advised to buy a 28ga but when I looked In to it the 28ga guns are based on a 20ga action and weigh about the same. Ended up getting a yilditz 20ga youth Sporter which my son shot from 10 years old using low recoil cartridges….now moved on to a 12ga. Wouldn’t want others to experience the same problems

    Shotguns are a crude tool, basics are 2 steel tubes, a breach/trigger system and some wood furniture, main difference between a new cheap gun and new expensive is material qualities and geometry, a good shooter will shoot any gun well,, a krieghoff/ perazzi etc is not 500% more mechanical advantage than a browning pro sport etc.longevity between guns like a new ata and a new miroku will be miles apart which is the main thing, The best guns in the "cheap" range are used mirokus etc. A gun that will last 100years and shoot with the best of them

In my case, I'm fine with old, cheap dirt hunting gun, top barel modified choke, bottom full choke (slighty bigger hole at the end), two triggers, when I start hitting 85-90 per 100 at hunting trap (slow 70km/h) then maybe I will go to something 'more sport one trigger full bla bla replaceable chokes bla bla) ... In my case, I'm bad, better gun doesn't help,. especially when from my cheap dirt good shooter can do 25/25 ;)
