I just got it. And installed. Aligned and run straight away. It honestly has an amazing spectrum, you are right.. and these soft bass sound. Deep and soft then straightaway fast and punching. Great with pop, rock from the 80’s which is what I listen the most. I tried also jazz .. good. About orchestra in classic music, honestly something is missing in the details. But as you told, it is a first great upgrade for novices. Easy to install and setup.

I came back to its sound after trying a few higher priced carts. Excellent value if yo ask me and the E series is a great upgrade from the basic Audio Technica 95 and its current versions.

Great review Randy! My first cartridge, back in 1980, was an Ortofon OM10. The description you gave of the 2M Blue sounds like the house sound hasn’t changed at all over the years. For my return to vinyl playing last year, I went for the E3’s big brother, the G1042. Not a cheap moving magnet by any means, but a stunning cartridge, nevertheless. Happy record spinning. 😉

Hi Randy, just noticed I never subscribed to your channel which is weird, I have been a fan for months. So here's another sub. Anyway, that's not what I wanted to say. I wanted to thank you for this review. Knowing what I know about your tastes in sound and my own purchasing this cart was an easy decision after seeing this review. Since oktober last year I have slowly been upgrading my system. Started with a pair of lintons, went with a marantz pm8006 which I could get at 2/3 the price in a summer sale a couple of weeks ago, and last Wednesday replaced the stock cart on my audio technica lp120 with this goldring. I up the mids a bit and lower the treble and to my ears this system sounds like magic. Tone controls for the win. No harshness, yet still detailed with a meaty presentation. It's this cart that tied it all together, I love it and cant stop spinning records. I have been looming at the nagaoke as well, but since you can get it included with a technics sl1500 where I live, it was an easy decision to go with the goldring after this review. So thanks, for giving us sound advice :D

For the money, it makes more sense to buy an Audio Technica AT-VM95ML cartridge and enjoy the added benefits of a microline stylus! Not only is the stereo separation and frequency response better but, the stylus will last much longer and will perform with almost zero IGD. Microline styli sit deeper into the record groove and can make older records sound quieter because they track portions of the groove walls that ellipticals and spherical styli never touch. More detail and accuracy then elliptical styli, too. I would persoanlly never go back to an elliptical stylus. They always exhibit some IGD.

Unfortunately, some of the devices that Randy recommends are very difficult or mostly not available for me in Germany and sometimes they are a bit more expensive because of shipping.

@@cheapaudioman My pleasure, Randy !! The "Goldring E3" cartridge is available only from a handful of HiFi dealers in Germany. Also at "Amazon Germany", there it is even the cheapest offer for about 100 EURO (102 USD), but it is called "Goldring GL0058" for whatever reason, it's only in the product description that you can see that it's something with "E3". Unfortunately, this "E3" is not supposed to be suitable for Thoren's tonearms, if you believe the customer reviews ... but fortunately there are a few other very good sounding and affordable cartridges for my elder Thorens TD 280 MK IV. But there are some other smaller or not so well-known manufacturers who offer little or no offer outside the USA, or certain products are only produced for or offered in the USA, like the "Sony SSCS5" for instance. But that's the other way around with some products from Europe either. Ordering in the UK and having it delivered from there is currently much more limited or even impossible due to significant delivery and transport problems caused by the "Brexit" and the "Corona Pandemic" ... or currently by the war in the Ukraine ... at least that's how it's told or that's how they want us to believe it, and if products are rarely delivered, then the prices are significantly higher ... in Germany it is the same with all products imported from abroad, much of it partly just profiteering, but that's how it is in western economic capitalism and its "eternal growth", that's nothing new, but that is another topic that fills the entire evening.

Based on the (very limited) experience I have in my home I have no issue recommending replacing the at95 with this goldring. One thing I can't say for sure is how far gone my old needle got during those years. I think it easily got 5000 hours in. This might heavily skew my perceptions so it's important info to share.

As you've done numerous best lists & this speaker vs that speaker, how about doing the same thing with amps of any type within a price range? The topology can be whatever it is, but the type of amp, just a power amp, or an integrated amp, or receiver amp should be the same. For example Denon PMA800 vs Arcam SA10.

Hi there Randy, I currently have a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon with an Audio Technical AT100E cartridge. I'd like to upgrade the cartridge as I feel it is a bit rough around the edges, and the bass is really sloppy for my taste. I'd like tighter bass, better detail retrieval and an overall more balanced and musical presentation. Can you recommend some no-fuss carts I can install on my Debut Carbon? Debut Carbon is feeding a Sansui AU-555A which is powering a pair of Celestion Ditton 551. I'm looking to spend up to $600.00 AUD. Many thanks, Dana

Fantastic review. Loved it. Although I never cared much for the E3 as it sounded too much like a budget cartridge, I do like most of the Goldring range of MM's. Over here in the UK the Goldring 1042 has a legendry reputation and the one to beat at the price. Superbly balanced with no sibilance and a BIG step up from the Nagoaka and the Ort Blue. If you can't stretch to this wonderful sounding cartridge you should try the Goldring 1012GX which is really kick-ass and punchy. The great thing about these Goldring cartridges is that the only difference between them in the 1000 series is the stylus profiles. So you can start with a 1012 and end up with the magnificent 1042 by just swapping the stylus !! Winner winner chicken dinner !! 😊

Ohhh... I feel a little let down as you didn't mention the Sumiko Pearl and how it compares. I bought a Pro-Ject RPM1.3 3 times and 3 times Amazon sent me a Pro-Ject RPM1 Carbon instead. I had to keep the 3rd one because the turntable I bought was no longer available. But I wanted the sound quality it was said to provide so I had to buy a Sumiko Pearl to install as every review of the Ortofon Red has been negative. Now I just have to figure out how I add density to the carbon fiber tonearm to help the record groves not throw the tonearm around and to prevent the sound from the needle from echoing inside the ultralight, ultra solid tonearm. But did I make a mistake buying a Sumiko Pearl?

I wish I could understand vinyl fanatics. I became an audiophile in 1973 when I purchased my first stereo instead of a car like my friends. I was already a musician for 6 years before buying that first stereo, so my ears were trained ahead of time. I was listening for trueness, I was listening for what instruments actually sounded like in my record collections. But even with a lower end audiophile system ( I was 16 years old) I could hear loss of 10kh+ frequencies in my new records after the 10th play. I was meticulous as a scientist when setting up the tone arm and read all the literature (yes read it was 1973) on the advantages and disadvantages of tone arm weight and anti-skating. I experimented with different cartridge's also for my beautiful Pioneer S shaped tone arm and real wood base ( what a beautiful instrument to play my vinyl). But always the disappointment of frequency loss from the contact wear of the vinyl. Then in 1986, bought my first CD player and CD Linda Randstad and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra....no noise, no needle in the groove rumble, no pops or clicks...just absolute purity. Then she began to sing and her volume grew and the dynamic range just blew me away along with the clarity of her vocals. This was as exciting as the first time I played that first stereo at 16 years old, put on a Steely Dan album (Can't Buy a Thrill) and was just blow away by the sound. NOT one of my friends or neighbors at the time ever had a stereo as nice as mine, this was the first time I heard a good stereo, and it was mine. The room filled with Steely Dan and it sounded better than a live concert. But now with CD, I was listening to dynamics too, drums didn't sound like carboard boxes hit with sticks, cymbals didn't sound like pie plates, and vocals were like the person was in the room. Yep, that first CD, and I never listened to my vinyl collection ever again.

if you buy something that is recommended as very good today, tomorrow there will be something that will be recommended as even better ... you can be busy buying stuff forever if you make yourself dependent on something like that ... and keep in mind, if you hadn't heard about such new recommendations, then you wouldn't have this little "luxury problem" and would continue to be satisfied with what you have ... each of us hears and feels differently, we don't all live in the same living room either, so such recommendations should always be viewed with due skepticism and can only serve as a starting point for your own decision ... nobody can, may or should make this decision for you for many reasons, unless you get the stuff as a gift, then maybe ... that's how it is in the "audiophile" music scene ... but not only there ... "never change a running system if your happy with it" or something like that... I've heard that before somewhere ... rather invest your money in new LPs, that's much more rewarding and exciting
