    It broke because he used it wrong. That type of expander has to be fully inserted into the pipe. If it's only partially inserted, like he did, the stress of expansion is concentrated on the center of the steel bars. They are not designed for that, and they will break. If it's inserted all the way in, the stress will be on the round internal pushers, and it will work fine.

    Looks like it was damaged because u were using it on compromised pipe to begin with. The pipe had a severe ridge in it from the previous u-bolt, so when U applied pressure from the tool to expand it was all concentrated on the u-bolt ridge damaging the tool. Guarantee if u had used it on pipe that was round and not damaged it would have applied even pressure and worked fine.

    I'm pretty sure you must put the whole tool into the pipe. Not just to the second o ring, next would be grease it up, to allow easier slip. And last, heat the pipe. Unfortunately the oring will melt so that becomes a replacement part. I'm surprised they don't have a steel wound ring spring so that it can take the heet. I'm also surprised that they don't use an acme thread as it has greater lateral streagth

    CC&Z Shouldn’t have to insert it all the way just because it’s not Snap-On. You should be able to use the tool in the same manner regardless who makes it, but your right about the quality of the material Snap-On’s Exhaust Expander is made of. I used my former Chrysler Foreman’s quite a bit when I worked with him at the dealership & that was a Bluepoint Expander and I used it in the same manner. No issues.

    Theramsey3 not true. Snap-on makes this same kit. You not supposed to go passed the neck so being 3/4 of the way in is normal & it can be used with an impact. I’ve done it time and time again. The threads held up fine. It was the cheap metal flats that broke.

  • @The1Ramsey3

    @The1Ramsey3

    @@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway so you are saying that that cheap tool you broke was made by snap on? You are comparing apples to oranges. They taste different because they are made to a different price point. The chinesieum of the one you broke needed to be fully inserted into the pipe and have hand tools used. It is a metal quality and heat treating issue. I agree if you HAD used a snap on in this manner it would not have failed in this manner because it is rated for what you did to the Chinese tool that was not rated for what you did to it. If I am wrong about your cheap tool being impact rated or rated to only be inserted 3/4 of the way into the pipe please provide me with a link or documentation, I will gladly admit I was wrong and apologize appropriately.

My suggestion is look at the Astro Pneumatic 78835, there are other companies that have a design like the Astro one, not sayin Astro made the design but just using it as ref to the style to buy. Lisle and the main tool truck companies should have one with the same design.

    Those suck! They only attempt to make a tube round again, and if you put real power to them, they break as demonstrated. The Lisle exhaust expander #34400 actually works, it has a slower ramp rate & you need extender collets for different size pipes... But this tool will actually stretch the pipe, with a little practice you can make nice slip joints... You can buy a set that will work with tubes up to 4.25" They also make proper tools to make the tube round again for clamping #32509 & #32750. (What you did here) Less throw-away tools.

    Did you follow the instructions? You're not supposed to use it with impact guns! You can also not use wrenches. Hand tighten only! j/k. 🤣 What a piece of junk

    Maxwell Peter for a $30 Tool my guess is 30 seconds, but it might have been 30 days. Either way it’s outside its warranty lol 😂 🍻
