Charnwood Table Saw Cross Cut Sled

In this video I look to come up with a new solution to the cross cut sled for my Charnwood table saw.

You have some nice machinery in your well laid out workshop, good lighting and filming as well. Enjoyed watching you modify your table saw for increased set up speed and simplicity to save yourself time on future operations. Tony

That was so interesting. I discovered you by accident. I have the same table saw, along with Charnwood band saws, mitre saw and router table; I have a sign which includes ‘Sawdust is man glitter’ and I also use DeWalt drills. And, as an added bonus, you are a Brit. 🌞

My Charnwood W619 arriving this week. I already have a Charnwood W570 thicknesser. Only do small projects. This will be the 1st item I will make on it as I too hate long set ups. Great video and easy to follow with great humor. Thank you

@@ukhomewoodworker848 well... I don't have much space so have to wheel or set up machines into the area I have. I do a lot with 18mm MDF and Birch ply. But am not the strongest person in the world - I really struggle to lift an 8x4 onto my two Bosch 'workmates' without tipping them over or the coffee I left on the corner of my work bench. Festool do a collapsible saw table with sacrificail board supports - and it can pick up boards from the side of the room. But, being made by the F word it is of course 3 billion pounds. So... any thoughts on making a home made version of it? Ever seen anything like that? Cheers. David.

@@davidbuchan2224 yes it’s a tricky one if I’m honest ripping full sheets of 8 x 4 is never easy unless you have a cabinet style saw and a large outfeed table but even then I didn’t like lifting the panels around. Even though I can rip full sheets on my saw I still did it using a track saw for the first cut to make it more manageable I would put some foam panels on the floor and put the panel on top. If you are mainly doing mcd and ply cutting you probably don’t need a full cabinet table saw you can get a decent job site saw which saves space, you get what you pay for with these but the dewalt ones always get good reviews 👍

Great project. Thanks for sharing. Man after my own heart: the need to constantly check for square and true on my Charnwood sliding table fence drives me nuts (and stops me using it). Separately, I think I wouldn’t buy a Charnwood table saw again. It’s powerful enough but it took a lot, and I mean a LOT of setting up, shimming the extensions with washers, filing off sharp corners etc and I’m by no means a perfectionist on this stuff. Too much play in the rip fence. Poor dust collection too. But, you get what you pay for.

@@ice4142 I think it was about 3 years ago, it’s only the sliding bit that I am referring to everything else was very good and if you didn’t want to take the sliding fence off very often it might not be an issue but for me on most projects I am always witching between rip cuts and cross cuts, I did see Matthew video and he is clearly a skilled woodworker and the review was very good so might just be that it didn’t work for my style of working 👍

Thanks for watching Nic, I think they are both powerful solid machines, similar build quality, if you really want a sliding carriage then obviously the Charnwood has an advantage but for me I think the newer Axminster saws are really nice with the large surface area and extension tables 👍

Thanks Paul 🙏 welcome to the channel 👍 I have actually just sold the planer thicknesser but only because I am changing my ways of working a bit, it was an awesome machine to be honest I never had to adjust it straight from delivery for 2 years, the fence needs a bit of setting up but again once you have it right no need to touch it, overall I found it great a real work horse if you look after it. Merry Christmas 🎅🏻🎄

Carl Whitfield yes no problem, I am very happy with the table saw it’s powerful easily cuts through walnut etc and is very accurate never had to reset the fence from day one and it runs happily of 13a socket, I just didn’t get on with the sliding attachment which is why I made the jig but I use this saw every time I am in the workshop and it has performed brilliantly, the dust extractor is just a Rutlands drum style extractor inside a sound reduction canines the remote control is one of those one that you plus into the socket, there are convenient but don’t leave them plugged in when you’re not in there as they can be set off by random things 👍
