    Congratulations. Hope you enjoy it. Make sure to check the alignment of the riving knife. Mine was out by about 0.05 mm and caused some cuts to be out of square. I shimmed the bottom of it with a thin washer and that fixed it. I think all told, I've had to shim two or three things, which given the price, is more than acceptable. The saw is a beast and very accurate once set up.

    Thanx for a great review. Have just ordered one of these, after looking at so many others I decided on this 'cos of price, cast iron top and it came across as quite a decent bit of kit for the cost. After using a Clarkes 10" noise bucket for a couple of years I can't wait for it to arrive. I also have a similar set up and I reckon it will fit in well. Cheers.

    Very helpful review. My 629 just arrived today and all that remains is to assemble it with the aid of your information. I read a few reviews before buying the saw and found that over the years some issues raised have been addressed / improved. it will be interesting to see if there has been any more refinements since your post. Right off the bat I have to say I can't believe how heavy this saw is. Not a complaint. I expected to be able to move the saw with some effort but even with the wheel kit I'm having to re-assess where I site this tool in my small workshop. I'm a retired firefighter in decent shape and my younger neighbour plays rugby and we had to work hard to move the saw close to my workshop on a hot humid day. The saw was in a crate bolted to a mini pallet and then mounted on a full pallet. Happily I found the unpacking instructions..... inside the crate.. I had expected to be able to move the saw after removing all the components but I still needed assistance

    Thank you Mathew for a great independent review. After I seen your review I ordered one a few weeks ago and it arrived today. I spend a couple of hours assembling and adjusting and found a number of things you mention really helpful. I found the build quality very good as I had gained the impression from your review it was needing quite a few minor tweaks regarding the mitre slots needing filed etc. I didn't have any issue with this (the mitre slots) but I did find the vertical adjustment of the fence needed a small shim which a little piece of thin card sorted out on seconds. After a few test cuts I was able to get really accurate cuts to within about one fifth mm or less which is as accurate as I require and some. Overall I am very pleased with saw performance and believe as you say sub £1000 is a very good buy. The thing that hacked me of the most was the fact that I hadn't bought one before this!

    Thanks for the comment and I'm glad that I could be of help. I've been using the saw for a few months now, and after filming the video, I had to shim the bottom of the riving knife to get the alignment perfect. Since then however, I haven't had to do anything. Everything has kept its alignment and it just works perfectly.

    Great review Matthew. Thank you. I too have this saw and found my rear tables to be perfectly aligned and so was my fence (in both directions). My biggest gripe is the location of the power switch. I easily moved mine to the front of the saw and also added a large paddle to easily stop it.

    Thanks for the comment. Having used the saw for a while now, I'm more than happy with the accuracy and power but I agree, the location of the power switch is very poor. Its on my to do list. It really needs to be at the front, preferably suspended from the front rail.

    Perfect review, if only there were more like this available. I bought the W629 last year and have not regretted it. I couldn't get on with the sliding table so removed it and used the supports to add a very sturdy removable side table using oak worktop off-cut - created a perfectly flat 4 foot wide (1200mm) table. I replaced the awkward two-piece insert with a simple wooden one (courtesy of Norm's video) and added a riving knife to that with a second without for 'over-the-top' cuts. Reliably accurate and quiet enough to leave the garage door open. I shimmed the fence vertical by adding plastic strip between the fence and the black connector making it spot-on and much more accessible. Would recommend as an affordable 13amp powerful induction saw.

    Matthew. Great review. I have an old SIP version of the W650 - bought it second hand 5 years ago - no regrets at all. The men’s shed that I attend has the same saw as yours - about 6 years old now and has held up well - the main problem is the fence - not a cam lock system and impossible to keep square - we just need to replace it with this new version.

    Great review. Thanks for posting. I’ve used this for over a year and agree with everything. It’s a fair point about compromises and the price point. I do agree that for the money you get a lot of functionally solid saw without having to adjust the electrics in the shop. The set up tweaks are easy enough if you’re confident enough to take a file to something new and shiny! Getting the insert plate flush with the table was a bit irritating but doable. I find the size of the mitre slots a real pain though. Don’t mind making the odd runner for basic sliding jigs but I do want my existing featherboards etc to fit and lock. I’ve also had a problem with the mitre slots not being completely consistent across their length, which is hard to manage. I find stuff like that pretty disappointing. Agree the switch on the side is wrong - and dangerous. I have to take my eye of my workpiece/blade to “find” the on switch. And in an emergency, that could be even worse to switch off. Such an odd design choice. Sliding table itself has remained very accurate over time, despite knocks and taking on and off. The fence on it does require a lot of checking for square though. The main fence is good and solid. As noted, a little play at the far end, beyond the blade, but that’s ok. Its narrow profile and the two part fixing mechanism means it’s not very easy/stable to fit jigs to the fence (e.g. a long acute bevel jig or hold downs) which I’m grappling with at the moment. Haven’t made any zero clearance inserts yet because it’s so fiddly. My verdict: if you’re on a budget, go into it with confidence but eyes open. Personally, I wish I’d saved my pennies a bit longer and gone for a more user-friendly option.

    Hi Matthew. Great review and very informative. I have the same saw, but I am struggling to get the steel side tables level with the main table. As you described, I have shimmed the back rail with washers and that is now level, but I can't see how to get the front rail level. The other issue I have is with the sliding carriage, which sits about 2-3mm above the level of the main table, which means that any material is 'floating' as it passes through the blade (far from ideal). As a result I don't use it. Finally, the dust collection is abysmal, as every time I use it I have a pile of sawdust under the saw. Otherwise accuracy and quality of cut are excellent. Thanks for the review, Colin Crannis

  • @MatthewSmall

    @MatthewSmall

    2 жыл бұрын

    With regards to the side tables, if there isn't enough vertical adjustment available, a small file to lengthen the mounting holes would work. That's not ideal and I would investigate all of the bolts and bolt holes first. Loosen them all, including the back ones a bit but don't remove them. If, with them loose, you can push the side tables in to position, they should tighten up in that position. If not, file the holes. The sliding table has adjustment to lower it. The manufacturer recommendation of a couple of mm is way too much. You want it less than 1 mm. Mine is at about 0.25-0.5 mm.

    Very helpful review as I'm thinking of buying this, (maybe the 650 now). I understand what you are saying about the price point but it looks like you are justifying some issues that the manufacturer could easily iron out in production. Thanks for the review though, I now know what issues I might expect to encounter. I just upgraded my small bandsaw and now need to persuade the Mrs that I also need to upgrade my table saw.

  • @MatthewSmall

    @MatthewSmall

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment. It's not about trying to justify anything. I would have preffered there to be no issues with it at all, but the sad fact is that whenever you buy anything, there is value designed and built into it. More expensive products generally have more inbuilt value in the form of labour, machine time and materials quality. If a manufacturer makes a number of products in a product line, the more expensive products will be made to tighter tollerances and that takes more time to set up, program and quality check than something with lower tolerances. Likewise, if a manufacturer has just spent £50k on new tooling for one of the CNC machines and another machine has worn tooling, it's obvious that the higher cost products that are better prepaired and have better surfaces and tolerances before going into the CNC are the ones that are going to go in the machine with new tooling as they are less likely to cause damage to it, less likely to cause premature wear and will return the investment sooner than a cheaper product that may not be as well prepared. Yes, Charnwood could have very easily rectified the problems with this saw, but then it would be more expensive and would need to be aimed at a different target market. With modern convenience, people expect everything to match the picture in their head, when in reality, this is never the case. When you look at the cost of all the other table saws on the market in this specification range, this represents exceptional value for money. For just under £800, you get a 10" table sw with a 3 hp induction motor, flat cast iron top, 16mm trapezoidal thread lead screws, a reliable fence and a decent sliding table.Compromise has to be made somewhere in order to maintain that price point. As for the 650, I'm told it's an excellent saw, so if you have the money for it, I think it's a no brainer.

    Me too, I think 650 is worth the extra cost, it also has better fence with micro adjustment(beside cast iron parts). The only problem for me is nobody seems to be stocking it in Ireland, and I am not sure if charnwood are willing to ship could be uk mainland only for shipping. Holzstar tks 254 pro seems like exactly the same saw as charnwood w650, similar price and in stock, but I would prefer charnwood. Anyway if you do get it, will you please let me know your impressions here if you get a chance 😤.

    Whilst I would be confident to recommend the 629 to anyone, I would also say that if you can afford the 650, get that. It's a better tool and you should always buy the best you can afford. If you can't spend the extra, then the 629 will give you no issues once set up correctly.

    Really good video thanks. I have a question which doesn't seem to have come up in the comments so far. I also have a small workshop. One of the attractions for me on reading the manufacturer specs / description of this saw, was that they say it's easy to remove the side and sliding tables (they say 2 mins) for storage / space, and then re-assemble without having to make any adjustments (in a video I saw, it looked like you could literally just slide the side table off). Would you say this is correct, or is it likely to put everything out of alignment?

    Based on this excellent review I have just bought a W629. Got it set up yesterday and very pleased. Everything that Matthew said is spot on. It is really good value for money. My only problem is that the blade is 0.4mm out of alignment to the fence and the sliding table. I shimmed the fence but when I found the sliding table was out I thought I should move the saw blade. I loosened the four screws on the table top but can't get the motor/blade to move. Any hints or ideas?

  • @MatthewSmall

    @MatthewSmall

    Yeah. If the blade is parallel to the mitre slots, leave it alone. The rail for the sliding table can be adjusted to bring that in alignment to the blade. If the blade is not parallel to the mitre slots, undo 3 of the 4 bolts so that they are loose and slacken the fourth off only slightly. Then take one of the side panels off and use light taps from a deadblow mallet on the blade housing, at the opposite end of the housing to the one belt left mostly done up, using it as a pivot. Also, you might need to release the blade angle locking lever, but I'm not sure. It should say in the instructions. Remember that the blade housing weighs a fair bit so will need some persuasion.

    Hi Matt, great review you've got there. It's been 2 years, how is the table saw holding up? Would you recommend it for a newbie? Thinking of going for the W650 or the itech 250. I'm a bit torn between both. How accurate is the sliding table? Does it go out of alignment? Like I said, I've got my eyes on the itech 250, but I'm not confident about the fence. It looks flimsy on the eyes. You advice would be very helpful to a potential woodworker.

    Matthew, very good review; only one comment "for prospective buyers", mine has problems with the mitre slots, and not just the unfinished edges, they are both different sizes, so much that neither has a controlled fit of the mitre gauge supplied and are ‘like most things’ non standard, and that makes difficulty in fitting feather boards of any description; however, as you say at a price point, it does the job: In most cases.

  • @MatthewSmall

    @MatthewSmall

    I've heard others have had the mitre slot issue, and from what I can tell, it seems to be on the older model saws. The new ones should come with the same size slots. They're still not standard though. After talking to some retailers and manufacturers, there doesn't actually seem to be an industry standard in the UK. The standard that we all know seems to be an American thing and most of the good quality aftermarket jigs and tools are either American or coppies of American designs, so they won't fit the vast majority of saws here. Some companies, like Axminster, do now manufacture the slots at that size, but more companies don't than those that do, so it can't really be called a standard. The simple way around this is to buy whatever jigh you like and replace the manufactured runner with a hardwood or ply runner cut to fit your slot. I do this on loads of my machines as every single one has different size slots. It does make it a pain to have to have multiples of the same jig to fit each machine, but it is a way around the issue.

  • @Giokosmik

    @Giokosmik

    @david osullivan, hi. It doesn't make any difference. Mathew probably didn't explain it properly. 16a is the circuit breaker at the commerciall unit and all power plugs for single phase appliances or motors have 13a fuse in their wall plug. A few powerful motors that draw more amperage than 16a when they are started will need a 20a circuit breaker in the commercial unit and possibly thicker cable to the 20amp double pole switch and fixed connection. Maximum KW for single phase appliances with 13a fused wall plug is 3.5 kW. More than this you need dedicated line as explained roughly above.

    Had this saw for 2 years now and have to say it's not easy to load into an estate! It's 129Kg packed!! Two or three man job to move it. Once you get past the usual faults and niggles common to all saws at this end of the budget, it performs well so is worth persevering with. Common issues include awkwardness of setting up fence but it's easy enough with patience. Sliding mitre table is the most difficult to square up but once set, stays true unless you bang the table or track. Nuts and bolts provided are rubbish and need replacing with decent ones. The main thing to check is that when mitre table is mounted, it's level with the main table and you square it up by using feeler gauges or a digital vernier and ensure the track is dead square to the mitre slot on the main table. The actual mitre gauge is then set by means of the cam adjuster. The main let down on this saw is twofold. The writhing knife is a PITA to removed and doesn't drop low enough so needs cutting down a little and the dust extraction is worse than woeful and is a complete after thought. Most of the dust ends up on the floor under the machine and the angle adjuster for the blade needs sawdust regularly cleared from its adjustment slot. Other than that it's a great saw for the money.

  • @MatthewSmall

    @MatthewSmall

    Having owned mine for a few years now, everything you said is correct. The adjustments to the sliding table and fence can be a pain, but once done, generally don't budge. Also as you said, the dust collection is a joke. I'm going to be experimenting with this in the future to see if it can be made better. As for the riving knife, I think I just hit mine with a hammer and it went down below the blade, but I might have cut it down. I can't remember.

    Hi, I received my '629 about a month ago and am very please with it. I did have a problem with the sliding carriage not moving in a straight line. The plastic wheels that run on the aluminium extrusion were molded out of line with the axis of bearing that they were mounted on (about 0.25mm runout o/a). I turned up a bar to hold the bearings and skimmed the plastic as accurately as I could, and have reduced the runout to a couple of thou' over the dia of the saw blade. • @jazzsaxboy

    There is one rather annoying part to this saw. The gap between the blade and the table insert is quite large about 4mm. If you are trimming the end of a piece of stock to length and the piece you cut off is smaller than 4mm it falls down inside and blocks the dust extraction. It's a pain to get out. I suggest you buy some special tape designed for this very purpose. It will save you a lot of hassle.

  • @MatthewSmall

    Yes. That's how I use mine all the time now. The rail that the table slides on needs moving backwards so that the end closest to the front is in line with the fence rail. You then take the entire sliding table off, spin it around and remount it without disturbing the sliding table fence. That will then increase your cross cut capacity by a large margin.

    @@2k9carty no, I don't have a picture. You don't need one either. The sliding carriage mechanics comprises two substructures; the cast iron sliding table and the aluminium rail. Take off the cast iron table fro either end, it doesn't matter which. The aluminium rail is fixed to its support brackets underneath with a few bolts at either end (the ones that slide into the slots on the aluminium rail, not the ones connecting the brackets to the support arms). Loosen these off and slide the rail backwards until the front end is aligned with the front end of the main table or the fence system, then tighten the bolts back up and replace the cast iron sliding table so that it is facing 180 degrees to when you took it off. The fence on the sliding table should now be at the back and the sliding table should slide way past the blade.
