Charlie Hunnam and George MacKay on True History of the Kelly Gang
One of the many films to world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival was director Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang. Based on Peter Carey’s Booker Prize-winning novel, the film is a fictionalized re-telling of the life and crimes of infamous 19th-century Australian outlaw Ned Kelly (played by George Mackay). For those unfamiliar with Kelly’s story, while he only lived twenty-five years, he’s an Australian legend in the mold of Jesse James or Robin Hood. In the film, which is told in three acts, we learn about Kelly’s childhood, teenage years, and, finally, his last days. The film also stars Russell Crowe, Charlie Hunnam, Nicolas Hoult, Essie Davis, and Thomasin Mackenzie.
Shortly after seeing the film I sat down with Charlie Hunnam and George MacKay at the Collider studio at TIFF. They talked about the unique story structure, how much they knew about Ned Kelly’s story before getting the script, what it’s like working with actors they admire, why MacKay and the other actors created a punk band for rehearsal on the movie, and so much more. In addition, Charlie Hunnam shares a great story about his first scene with Russell Crowe and how he auditioned for Master and Commander three times without getting a role.

14:10.....George did what allot of actors wouldn't have the balls to do..... 💯 respect to him for that
George mentioning his favorite team Chelsea is so cute😂😂😂 Side note: George’s redirection to The Kelly Gang was actually really thoughtful he knows that small films don’t get as much attention that films with a bigger budget
Charlie is very impressive in this interview. Articulate, and forms his points skilfully. What a guy.

Yeah, he’s more a people person, and great communicator. George is cool, but in his own way. Kind of awkward communicator. But when you get past that, and really listen to what he means. Love his earnestness. Both cute in their own way. From a female perspective😂~ Just adding that. I know you’re talking from a guy’s guy perspective.
Loving the “Jax Teller” look that Charlie is sporting! So miss SOA!

He's actually very good with accents! Have you heard his Scottish accent in Sunshine on Leith or For Those in Peril? It's pretty "spot on", like you say. He also nailed the Kentucky accent for the show 11.22.63 !
George is holding a mic for Charlie. So cute! 😄
As a fellow Australian, his Australian accent was literally spot on
The way George asked the interviewer to redirect the interview back to The Kelly Gang... 😢 Mad respect.
Charlie has filmed TWO movies here in Toronto ...maybe 3. But the ones i can only think of which I saw him film here in Toronto was Crimson Peak and Pacific Rim. The first time i met Charlie was on set of Crimson Peak..and George is one of the TIFF regulars he comes here every year or so. Very underrated actor. BOTH Charlie and George are freaking phenomenal.
This movie kicked ass, anyone considering giving it a go definitely should. It has a style unlike anything I have seen before. It isn't a perfect film, but it is wildly entertaining. There is a particular scene near the end that feels so visceral and engrossing that it stuck with me long after I finished the movie. The use of darkness, sound and chaos creates something truly unique despite being a pretty common event in movies.
Great questions you had here. I love the answers as well. Charlie is such a true actor. He not only is a method actor and has to become that character in order to play it but he also gets emotional if viewers don’t like it. A true actor cares about the performance. He’s so true to his work.
George being as polite and classy as always. 💖 12:50 the way Charlie looks at George. 💖💖 Great interview. 👌🏻
I actually loved King Arthur Guy Ritchie's take was awesome I just wish Charlie Hunnam would come back to Pacific Rim.

Gosh Pacific Rim Uprising was a disaster of a film! Hated it. Even Charlie Hunnam wouldn't have saved that film, only person that could have saved is obviously Guilmero Del Toro.
King Arthur was fuckin deadly! The critics really harmed that movie and didn't give it a chance! Fuckin shadow artists. Charlie is a tremendous actor and awesome human being!
The interviewer is passionate and knowledgeable about film and actors appreciate it.
This interview is so brilliantly insightful. Now I'm even more excited to see this film! 💓
Its given charlie is so talented and handsome SOA forever , George is an actor i was not aware of but am lookin fward to watch 1917 looks good gr8 cast, i love Ned kelly , this interview was good love the interaction with George n Charlie u could see the respect there ,not just from George to Charlie but from Charlie to George listening to what George was sayin ,and Charlie story about Russell crow was gr8 coz russell takes not sh# and i think Charlie is the same , love them
I ❤ both of them!! Charlie & George!
great interview!
George is correct - the Ned Kelly story is one of class warfare between the English and Irish in 19th century Victoria. And does Charlie realise that Animal Kingdom was made by another Australian, David Michod.
@samsabastian5560
4 жыл бұрын
The Ned Kelly story is nothing of the sort. If you think that this is true you are mistaken. There was NO class warfare in Victoria at that time. All people fitted in with each other. The suggestion that there was class warfare is just another Kelly myth. The police force was 82% Irish. You need to read Ned Kelly, Selectors, Squatters and Thieves, and be enlightened.
