Charlie Chaplin Meets Harry Lauder

Ойын-сауық

A rare opportunity to see two of the twentieth-century's greatest comedians side by side. Harry Lauder was a stage vaudevillian whose world renown at its peak rivaled that of Charlie Chaplin's, although his success was mostly limited to music hall venues. In this short film, Lauder joined Chaplin for a couple of skits, including a mimicry of each other's well-known gait. This eight-minute short was part of an unfinished fund-raising project for injured soldiers during the war effort.

I pass by his studios every so often I feel sad at how congested and dirty Los Angeles and this once beautiful street has become. The studio remains the only beautiful thing on the street

I think it's just awesome that it's still there!! And for those of us who don't live in LA, it's cool that we can at least look at it on Google maps street view and scroll up and down LaBrea avenue and see how the outside of the building hasn't really changed that much! To think of all the great films he made there and how he actually processed and edited his own film here. This building is a very cool piece of history!!

I'm 17, never seen a silent movie in my life - yet I'm dying of laughter over this. How do they do it!?

as boring as it's sounds they just did it! and that's all! early film was very experimental charlie would sometimes have 300 takes on one scene just to find out what would work best.

Chaplin, Lauder were Masters of early cinema...but try Buster Keaton sometime. Brilliant & death-defying stunts.

@@relars52 for that, also the great Harrold Lloyd, the Clock Tower scene, especially... Some thrilling stuff. And the boyhood cinema idol around WWI was Douglas Fairbanks, the original adventure star.

What a gem of a little film ! Two greats of comedy from the dawn of the last Century ! They seem as though they genuinely admire and like each other ! The piano accompaniment is delightful too ! Thank you for sharing !

Fran McMullen There is a charming video of Chaplin and Keaton as a violinist and pianist respectively; it's adorable! Chaplin was very self involved but was very devoted to men like Keaton, he wasn't as competative as you might think! It was Chaplin who warned his pal Buster Keaton to stay away.from giving up control to the studios! Buster didn't listen & was ruined! I'll never know what possessed me bit a market had a revolving rack of records where I made my first recording purchases ever; Sir Harry Lauder & one by Harry Belafonte! Albums used to have a world of info on their covers you learned a lot just buying them! I am glad you loved this; I am possessive of Harry Lauder, my first 🌟

Brings back happy - happier - memories, especially the night my dad met Charlie Chaplin in Blackburn, Lancashire in 1931. Maybe it's the fact that my dad spent a whole evening (not all in the bar) with the "little tramp", and got his autograph - but auctioned it for Blackburn Infirmary. The most recent book, by Peter Ackroyd, about Chaplin is very good, but is mistaken when it states that Charlie was in a local pub (actually our biggest hotel bar) and nobody recognized him.

How wonderful is it that Sir Harry Lauders descendent Sarah L. Moore is a lookalike for Princess Merida in the disney film BRAVE. I just came across the article about it in a Scottish paper called The Hamilton Advertiser and they mention that she has inherited the love of performing and of music. His legacy lives on.

Fascinating. 2 masters of comic timing with Chaplin leavening the slapstick with some melodramatic moves. Wish I could lip-read to know what they were saying.

John McLeod Indeed, at the time of this filming, Sir Harry would be knighted only a year later, in 1919. Sir Charles had to wait quite some time - until 1975.

I live in Dunoon Scotland. Harry lauder lived here between 1908 and 1930. His wife and only son are burried just outside the town. He owned massive tracts of land in this area. Funny as a FART IN A SPACESUIT THOUGH!!

@: Danny Osmund:- You got two things wrong. There is a plaque to him living in London from 1903-1911. Also, his only son was buried in France after being killed in World War One and he is buried by a memorial to him which he had set up in the cemetery in Dunoon.
