She's said this before; her brief flirtation with the mainstream and the trajector towards pop superstardom abruptly ended not because she COULDN'T do it, but because she didn't want to. She decided to stick with the unique and avant garde, and I guarantee will be remembered for it.

Absolutely, anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron. The fact that there's a long list of songs that she gave away to other artists that went #1 or charted really high should pretty clearly say as much.

@@CoCreation.with.Qualia I don't know if she doesn't want fame, tbh she never comes across as a person who is uncomfortable in front of a camera or being in the spotlight, but I think she likes being a sort of minor celebrity most people know, and is respected by her peers. There's something almost apocalyptic about it? The monogenre has died and we're picking up the pieces. The meeting to pick the new it girl is not taking place at the Met Gala, it's in a dingy, backrooms-esque Italian place named after another cult pop girl who got screwed over by her label. The stage is gone and the performers are making do with what's left.

I would also like to add: I’ve been in the rave scene for years and have followed the pop music zeitgeist since my teenage years- there’s something so charming and heartwarming seeing Charli promote her producers (who she knows plays a significant part in the overall sonic quality she’s going for) in her Boiler room set: Party Girl. Rarely, dare I say never, has a pop girl at her level EVER championed her production team as much as she has. The irony is this whole Brat Era being “bratty” is almost anything but the reality. Charli is Meta. IQ threw the roof- hence, why she’s a cult classic.

@@years3333 that's when it becomes post-irony. it's self-aware, but the goal is not to be satirical. the goal is actually to be the most sincere and authentic. I think Hannah Diamond is the best example of the PC music crew when we talk about sincerity. She's not mocking Girlhood and cute childhood girl wonders, she's putting light at it and showing her sensibility to these visuals and meanings. and that what's making it interesting. To be authentic and at the same time self aware at what it references

KZreadr Mic the Snare made a video a couple years back about PC music/hyperpop in which he discusses the sound’s “precarious residence between sincerity and parody”. Which is so well explained, but I think its also hugely about nostalgia. The zeitgeist of the early 2000’s/2010’s was pathologically “ironic” (ie parody), but nostalgia by nature is sentimental (ie sincerity), so if you grew up around that time, as all of these artists did, there is going to be a dichotomous fusion of those two conflicting concepts. And it’s brilliant because, to the rest of us who also grew up then, it feels so right. It also incidentally alienates those who do not identify with that appeal to y2k nostalgia and widens the gaps between musical generations. (Not a lament, that’s just how time works lol)

I feel like that tweet didn't get the whole point of the song. In the video they decide the next it girl is a random waitress, and with the line "when you look in the mirror you're just looking at me" she is saying anyone can be the next big thing. I doubt that group of icons could manufacture an it girl in some weird illuminati decision, and I especially don't think that's the point they're making in the first place.

You get lost in the rhythm like you lose yourself to the chemicals of love. It slaps. And "I love it" has its charms. The kind of bombastic that only works with Europop synths and those distorted bases - it really compliments the scale of Charli's vocals. 'Fancy" - yeah okay, your right there.

I thought Frost Children were so beautifully insightful and it was just a genius line in a wicked song, from a wicked album, because like what you're saying here, there's a certain fame that comes with that niche internet micro-celebrity that can't be attainable in any other volume. I thought that misinterpreted line was aiming to capture what you were talking about here.

Charli’s fame and influence makes her such an enigma and unable to be categorised, like radio one big weekend put her on the new music stage for rising artists bc she doesn’t fit anywhere yet everywhere even though she’s been making music for well over 10 years. She appears at major events, like the met albeit inconsistently and the Grammys always, she has influenced pop and pop culture irreversibly for years, always setting trends 2 to 5 years before their is a big hit capitalising on them, and everyone has heard of her but only gays KNOW her. You know her songs but her listenership and popularity means it makes sense she should play arenas, but on the crash tour only 2 years ago it was theatre venues bc her fame is elusive and confusing. She is pop, because she pioneered the genre but gets lots of recognition and credit whilst also not enough, like a Grammys sweep. She’s a fave of mine for a reason tho 😭

@@talkmone Ehhhh, I don’t think so. I think it brought a lot of attention to Charli that previous records didn’t. For example I was able to hear Beg for you on a pop radio station in Slovenia!? Never in my life had i thought that i would hear Rina Sawayama on any radio in my country. But I think that Crash will be a pivotal album in Charli’s career. She put on this persona of a pop star, an idea of which she previously fully reject. For example the lead single of this record was Good Ones, which was not written by her. That is surprising, because we know that she is a skilled songwriter and it works towards this world building of a pop star Charli persona. In interviews Charli also said that she wanted to try out being a pop star again, but on her terms. The pop star persona included big budget music videos (at least for Good Ones and Beg for you), a trending 80s production and a dance crew during her live performances. But it also meant collaborating with people like Caroline and Christine, bringing some of her own personality into the record as well as performing songs like Welcome to my Island remix on tour. Because of this pop star-ish cosplay it meant that she can now position herself as the “post-ironic it girl”, which is her whole current persona that is responsible for Brat (at least from what we’ve heard so far). If she kept making experimental records she just simply wouldn’t appeal to as many (gay) people, she probably wouldn’t land the Bodies Bodies and Barbie soundtracks, which introduced this persona of hers to the wider public. Also there are some amazing songs on Crash, Move and Constant Repeat being one of Charli’s best. Lightning, Crash, Yuck and Good ones are great too.

I have only seen discourse about exclusivity and "coolness" but I read it as openly unapologetic, meaning that whoever resonates is welcome in. All music videos are set in mundane, nondescript suburbia settings, a dmv, an airport, a grey family owned restaurant and she is there as everyone else is. All internet personalities are in a way in the same places common folks are, while they are projected on their phone screens. Who gets offended is obviously focused on how much they are out of place and why they are not there with them, while I think it's intended to be seen as a celebration, they bring self expression to wherever they are, whenever.

I really appreciate your videos, theres a very obvious love you have for music that makes me still want to watch, even when I disagree. On Charli XCX, I think there’s an exhaustion with the self-reference and self-awareness (not just with her with artists in general) the point is absolutely is to put a mirror up to this idea of “the it girl” and how even when diversity is celebrated, the it girl takes a few consistent forms. Celebrities have been utilizing this idea of self-reference to seem more relatable, and show they understand the way their fans perceive them. It was exciting at first, but culturally it seems like all we can do is look back. It also doesn’t seem to go deeper than showing that they “get it.” Still interesting to dissect, but exhausting. 6:50 The idea of the post ironic girlboss was such a good point. Anyway, didn’t mean to write an essay! Great video!

Great take but man you just reminded me that I am old. Saying Survivor was on it's 46th season and I'm like, that show hasn’t been on almost as long as I've been in the world. Wasn’t aware they changed the definition of a TV season, it used to just mean 1 year.

With the album concept being bratty and raw is exactly what she’s doing. Like if you don’t get it, you aren’t on the list and it’s the point. Not everything needs to be accessible/relatable. She’s being honest and bratty and it’s fun and aspirational. Also l think why Charli resonates with queer people is that she cherishes pop music. I respectfully disagree that most of her stuff is ironic. I think the magic is that she both genuinely loves the avante garde and she genuinely loves POP.

if you agree and it is the point then why respect it? if the layers of irony or self awarenesss doesn't change the fact that the video and song is still very self-indulgent and hedonistic in my opinion, and there's nothing else more really, if there was any kind of commentary about internet fame and culture it is overshadowed by the fact that she's still trying to profit and get cloud to the song inviting as many internet girls she could get, there is really no difference with other popstar videos featuring so many celebrity cameos, and come on boy, i agree vroom vroom is a vast improvement, but this song is just really as annoying as boom clap, but she thinks she's cool and self-aware now... i agree with the person in the tweet
