CHARLESTOWN ST AUSTELL | Exploring the seaside holiday village of Charlestown Cornwall

Charlestown is a small, historic village located at St Austell in the county of Cornwall, England. Situated on the south coast of Cornwall, Charlestown is a popular tourist destination known for its well-preserved 18th-century architecture and cobbled streets.
The village was built in the late 1700s as a port for the export of china clay and was designed to resemble a Georgian port town. Today, Charlestown is home to a number of historic buildings, including warehouses, custom houses which have been restored and converted into shops, cafes, and other businesses.
One of the main attractions of Charlestown is its harbour, which is surrounded by historic buildings and is home to a fleet of tall ships. Visitors can take a stroll around the harbour and admire the tall ships or take a boat tour to see the ships up close.
Another popular attraction in Charlestown is the Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre, which is dedicated to the history of shipwrecks and rescues in the area. The museum displays a collection of artefacts and exhibitions, including a replica of a ship’s wheel, navigational instruments, and a timeline of shipwrecks and rescues in the area.
In addition to its historical and maritime attractions, Charlestown is also known for its beautiful beaches and coastal walks. The South West Coast Path runs through the village, providing visitors with stunning views of the coast and opportunities for walks along the beach.
Overall, Charlestown is a charming and historic village that offers visitors a unique mix of history, maritime heritage, and natural beauty. Whether you’re interested in exploring the village’s history, admiring its tall ships, or simply relaxing on the beach, Charlestown has something to offer everyone.
Charlestown, Cornwall, has been used as a filming location for several movies and TV shows, including:
Poldark - a popular period drama based on the novels by Winston Graham, set in late 18th-century Cornwall.
The Three Musketeers - a 2011 movie adaptation of the classic novel by Alexandre Dumas.
The Eagle Has Landed - a 1976 war film directed by John Sturges starring Michael Caine and Donald Sutherland
Doc Martin - a British comedy-drama series starring Martin Clunes about a doctor who moves from London to a small village in Cornwall.
Jamaica Inn - a 2014 TV adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel, set in 19th-century Cornwall.
These productions have used Charlestown's well-preserved Georgian architecture and coastal setting as a movie location, showcasing the village's unique blend of history and natural beauty.

Watching this particular video of Charlestown brought so many memories back for me. For 8 year's running while on holiday with my family at Durporth Holiday site in the 90's I came every single evening to the beach and watch the sun go down. Absolutely beautiful place. Thank you for sharing this video mate, certainly brought memories back for me 👍👍

1981 I got a job in the village, well the workshop was just up from the pub and we would go and repair China Clay boats mostly at Par. I was a poor student and just needed employment as part of the Sandwich course. Yes lovely times for 6 months. Eventually finding digs with the cleaner and Bar Girl of the Pub. Yes the Rashley. 1 day off for the WEDDING of course!!! But mostly working. Lovely video. David and Lily.

Another great video. It is fascinating how nature creates the different coastline shapes than humans build harbours etc. They must have spent hours building the walls. I was not expecting the viking boat, my view is historical towns should have a museum to show how and who built and what reason they first settled there. If they charge reasonable fees many would visit and maybe us as a study centers for schools on field trips. I was wondering what the black object I was thinking a creature who knows fish regularly go to that area so they prey on the fish who are returning to the ocean.
