Grodin lived a good long life... died in 2021 at the age of 86. Johnny died in 2005 age 79. Johnny was born in 1925 and Grodin in 1935. It's so great they can now live on amusing countless others on the Internet. Johnny took over The Tonight Show from Jack Paar in 1962. My mom, who died in 2002 at age 74, like millions of other Americans, spent 40 years enjoying Johnny on late night TV. It really became a ritual for her. What a glorious era!!

Did Charles Grodin get along with Johnny Carson? Johnny Carson liked him so much that he put Grodin under contract as a guest in 1973. He would appear once a month, to the exclusion of all other talk shows. Their imitation of mutual hostility was so convincing that the programme always received letters of complaint about Grodin's shabby treatment of his host.

I remember in college seeing the original airing. This was really something special. These guys were doing "irony," "breaking the 4th wall," and "meta" years and years before those were things; making a mockery of the format, while still operating within it's conventions. I feel so privileged to have lived through the era when it was first being done. Now it's all water-downed self-aware braindead 'silly', and worst of all cute. (how can anyone stomach Fallon or Colbert after seeing this?) It's sad that so much mainstream tv never got better (talk shows, sitcoms). Thank god for long-form podcasts, HBO, Netflix etc.

Carson was and still remains and will remain the best late night talk show host ever.

Fantastically-played and brilliant!
Now that's some damn good ribbing.
Brilliant!
RIP Charles !🍺
Carson and Grodin made something that is extraordinary difficult seem like it was a stroll in the park.
Grodin is Great 👍
R.I.P Charles Grodin.
UNREAL CHEMISTRY between these 2
RIP Charles Grodin
Brilliant! Thanks for this great clip.
Grodin at his finest with Johnny...we will miss you Chuck say hi to Carson and McMahon
I have never seen anybody get Johnny so upset like this guy.
This is some of Johnny's funniest stuff.
Carson had Grodin on 36 times because he was good TV, and that was Carson's first priority. We always looked forward to Grodin. A nervous and agitated Carson was the most honest and funny Carson. He's quicker and funnier with Grodin than he was in 1962 when he first took over The Tonight Show.
Best talk show guest/host chemistry of all time
If you haven’t seen Midnight Run with Grodin and DeNiro I highly recommend it. Just hilarious.
"I have a 2-year-old son." (pause, then laughter) "Well, I'll alert the media, what...what do...?" LMAO :)
These two !!! Out of this world great !!!

Two legends.
Gotta luv these guys..........
Grodin has made me laugh for, some 40 years. To go toe to toe with Carson is priceless. He just has this funny way of being offended. Love it.
Don't tussle with the master!!!
i am learning about such amazing history about these legends, that i've heard from my other famous current comedian idols...........thanks covid
these guys are ozing with real sweet charm and intelligence , somehow that kind of world-class integrity is not around anymore ; we started losing that in the nineties , then it just dried out completely .
THESE TWO COULD TOUR TOGETHER- AMAZING CHEMISTRY.

Well said. Grodin set Johnny up to really shine.
These two trading punches is just fantastic comedy.
We were so lucky to watch these great people.(born in '71)todays talk show hosts suck.(ferguson though was very funny)
Charles Grodin R.I.P.
Of the late night hosts who followed Johnny, only Craig Ferguson could have pulled off an interview like this.
