Grodin was terrific - his deadpan humor and surly character he created for Carson and Letterman was brilliantly funny 😄👏👏 RIP Charles 🙏

I was in the audience for this show. I took a Greyhound bus 2000+ miles cross country at age 19 to see Johnny Carson in person before he retired. I still have the ticket stub in a shoebox somewhere. K.D. Lang sang Constant Craving on this show too. I wish I had a copy of the entire episode.

That’s a great story. But you are now obligated to tell us what that was like. Not the bus ride. But the part in Burbank. Don’t worry about rambling. Let it rip. I took the NBC studio tour once in 1979 while the show was being recorded, and we were able to peak in the studio door. Never had the opportunity to see a full session.

@@JamieSmith-fz2mz Got the 800# from the Yelowpages, booked a room at the Quality Inn on Hollywood blvd. Took a cab to Burbank. Met some cool people from the Midwest waiting in line who gave me a ride back to the hotel after the show. Sitting in the studio it got dead silent, a guy on stage held up his fingers 5, 4, 3... : BOOM to hear that live orchestra burst into that theme was such an overwhelming and visceral experience. It was surreal. I was kind of mesmerized during the whole show after that. The monologue was genuinely funny. It was all great, and was over in a blink of an eye, and I was back on the sidewalk in Burbank, dazed, confused, and giddy as a schoolgirl. Later that night I used my fake ID to hit the clubs on the strip. I was buzzed and stumbling around Sunset blvd. until almost daybreak. Good times. 👍

Great devotion. Like when I took a Greyhound from NM to Chicago to see Stacy Keach in his last Hemingway show. Gave the usher a signed copy of my Hem graphic novel to give him; a couple weeks later received a thank you email from him. Pretty neat

Perhaps the greatest 11:25 minutes of talk show history. The so called late night "Hosts" of our current times pale in comparison. We need a Charles Grodin in 2021.

In all of his appearances on Carson's show, I think this is the closest Grodin ever got to actually plugging any of the things he was meant to plug on the show.....and I strongly suspect they only got the movie stuff out of him due to contractual obligation from the movie studio.....
