Charles Dowding 60 Cell | Containerwise | Sowing Beetroot | Sowing Spring Onions

Charles Dowding 60 Cell | Containerwise | Sowing Beetroot | Sowing Spring Onions
A couple of weeks ago Charles Dowding posted a video talking about plug cell trays and how he has come together with a company called containerwise.co.uk/ and developed a new 60 cell plug tray, after watching that video I went straight online and ordered some. I knew instinctively they where what I had been looking for.
They arrived yesterday and I do a small review on the trays here then get a tray filled with compost and seeds sown, I am so happy with these traays and you are going to see these in use everywhere very soon.
I would like to see these trays being sold everywhere that one of the current clumsy cheap module seed trays are currently sold, and eventually the cheap plastic ones completely phased out. The Charles Dowding trays are made from recycled polypropylene so even if they do break (Hah! unlikely!) they can be recycled.

Steve it’s great you are raising awareness of these trays. Made an investment in a few different sizes last year, the bigger sizes are great for brassicas and sweet corn and some are as deep as root trainers! They are robust as you say and will last for years reducing the waste from the flimsy style inserts. Anyone considering them I’d say definitely give them a go. Thanks, Stephen.

Saw Charles' video on those trays and thought they looked good. 60 is too many for me though. Debating whether to sow some leeks indoors and take them down the greenhouse when germinated. Haven't got much space in there given the salads plus overwintering cuttings and geraniums. Now got to decide where to put the potatoes that arrived just now. Wouldn't normally order them online but did so for this year in case of shortages. Haven't been to the allotment this week, the cold and mud has put me off. Plus things to do indoors.

Hi Steve. Not sure what is special about Dowding's but they seem expensive; I bought good quality reusable Plug Trays from a wholesaler more than 5 years ago; the type I have are bigger (50cm x 28cm, 104 cells about 1" square each), cost less than a £quid each, are similarly ridged and have a large "push out" hole at the bottom. Fed up with flimsy Tray Inserts which, as you say, are fragile and basically one-time-use, I bought a box of 100 assuming they wouldn't last, but in practice I have only used, and reused, 5 or 6 trays season after season for the last half dozen years. There is a downside with a tray that big as I don't grow all-one-variety in 100's!! so I sow various different things in the tray, and they all need potting up at different times leaving gaps in the tray and wasting bench space. I'd prefer a tray that was same size as conventional seed tray. I'll send you a note so you can send me your address and I'll send you some ... only managed "friends-give-away" of about 25% of my box of 100 so far!

HI Kristen, Happy New Year to you and your family and thanks for the email. I grow a lot of plants every year from seed and my only limiting factor is space, the same as everyone, juggling the space required and protection needed at this early time of year is what forces me to start sowing earier and earlier every year so I can get plants growing and moved on so the next plants can be started. The Charles dowding trays allow me to use a standard seed tray size and grow 60 plants in an area I would normally only get 40, with the whole tray easier to move around. And the plug plants are an ideal size for me to either pot on, or plant straight out under protection, quite early, so freeing up more space, sooner, plus plug plants are easier to remove at planting time with fingers. But here is the kicker for me even if there was already not enough reason to buy and use the trays, they are recyclable, made of polypropylene and unlikely to ever break so will not need to ever be thrown away and if it does break it can go back into the system and be recycled. Making changes before they are forced upon us by law is by far the better way of doing things. I hope these trays work out, I'm happy with them and I think they will work fine for me, time will tell...Steve...😉

Good morning Carole and welcome to Green Side Up, they are around a fiver each I think, so fairly pricey but you have to do the long term mathematics on such products that will last for many years and assess if you will use them enough to qualify that price, my trays get used three or four times every year and are in constant use...Steve...😉
