Charging Your EV at Public Chargers

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

While most electric vehicles will be charged at home, there is a growing infrastructure of public charging stations to get you everywhere you need to go in between. Public chargers offer both level 2 and level 3 charging speeds, and can be found in a variety of areas such as grocery stores, restaurants, retail outlets, parks, hospitals, and many more places that may surprise you. But how do you use them? Well it's simple, fast, and surprisingly convenient.

    sorry for you guys who live outside Kansas City. about half of our Level 2 ChargePoint public chargers are free in KC. :P You kan check it out on the ChargePoint app. Thankfully, our city has many entrepreneur friendly perks. This seems to be one of the results. It's the new way that many businesses are marketing to EV owners. Great idea for both the business & EV owners! it's cheap for the businesses too. We kan plug in for free at many local grocery stores. Obviously those are my fav stores! (Our power company offered over 1000 free charging stations to business owners! i'd say their marketing campaign worked!)

    Your need for public charging will of course depend on your driving habits, but as I say in the video I really only use public chargers out of convenience rather than necessity. My Leaf's 80 miles have been enough to complete 95% of my travel needs, and my main charging resource is a home charger in my garage. I even got by on charging with the included EVSE cable that comes with the car for over 2 years before upgrading my charger! I only need to travel about 20-30 miles most days, so plugging in at 6pm after work and unplugging around 7am gave me a steady 80% of charge to work with each day. If you can spring for a faster home charger it definitely adds flexibility for unexpected trips in your EV, but if the price is a concern I'd say you can survive off of a 110v/120v wall outlet for the most part if you don't drive more than 50 miles daily. Keep in touch! Would love to hear how your EV experience progresses

    How does it work on the situation when your EV is at the EV charging station fully charged while you are shopping or doing whatever way passed the time or even leaving there overnight (while you visiting a friend).. will anything happen to your car (i.e. other angry customers, being towed?)

  • @EVeverything

    @EVeverything

    6 жыл бұрын

    There's kind of an unspoken code that you don't leave your EV in a space beyond what is needed to charge, but I've gone a little over what was necessary and never found an angry note or anything like that. I've seen some at hotels and apartments, so I'm sure there's more understanding if you leave the car plugged in overnight in places like that. The Leaf has a cool "lock" feature that keeps people from pulling the cable out of your car until it's finished charging. At that point it releases and anyone that sees you're fully charged can pull it out of your chargeport and begin their own charging session.

    I would not recommend leaving an EV blocking a charger for more than 1hr after completing charge. Related note is GM cars with on-star can send you a text when the charge completes so you know when to go get your vehicle. I use this feature on my Chevy Bolt.

    Thinking of owning an ev car but how do u know which station support your car cable coz I know the American , asian and Europe have different type charging cables

  • @EVeverything

    @EVeverything

    5 жыл бұрын

    If you're concerned about public charging stations, there won't be any issue because those stations will match whatever region you live in. They won't have different region types to choose from, only Level 2 & Level 3 charging speeds which will feature different style plugs. I was in Amsterdam last year for a trip and saw so many chargers, but none of them would have fit my EV from the U.S.A. And likewise, the public chargers in the States do not match what you'll find in Asia and Europe. So don't let cable compatibility worry you, and if you have a home or residence you can charge at then you'll be ready to charge right away at Level 1 speeds with the cable that will come with your new EV. I hope this clears up any confusion, but feel free to ask any follow-up questions. Glad to hear you are considering driving electric!

    So... there is a charging station in the street that the parking spaces around are designed for people with disabilities. The parking space however has a sign that says station to charge. One time a police told me I was not supposed to park there even if I am charging my car because it is for people with disabilities. You have any idea how this works?

    Well, ideally you don't have to sit around during the charging period. These stations are often placed in retail areas or grocery stores so you can eat a meal or do some errands during that time. These stations are really intended as complimentary to what should be regular charging of your vehicle at home.

    $25 to activate a ChargePoint account, but then that money just converts to a balance on your account that will be deducted from whenever you pay to use a public charger. So free, really. I don't ever pay to use the chargers in my area, rather just the $25 every 6 months which is exclusive to that Plug In Everywhere program offered through my electricity provider. My ChargePoint balance has remained untouched, and only has been deducted when I lost my activation card & ordered replacements.

    Yeah, it's important to take into account how long your charge will take so you can make an effort to move your car for someone else to use. My Leaf has a "lock" and "auto" setting for the actual chargeport, where "lock" keeps anyone from taking the charger out at all, but "auto" will at least release the charger after a full charge just in case I'm running a little late getting back to my car. Seems a lot of EVs don't have these settings, and in the case of our Volt it will just trigger an alarm if someone pulls the charger out prematurely.

    The Chevy volt is a hybrid car.

  • @EVeverything

    @EVeverything

    5 жыл бұрын

    It's much more than a hybrid, although it is that too. A Prius is a hybrid, but it can't drive 50 miles on battery alone like the Volt. A RAV4 hybrid can't be plugged in to charge the battery like the Volt. If it can drive more than 20 miles on plug-in power (Outlander PHEV, BMW i3 REX, Kia Niro Plug-in, etc), then it is not JUST a hybrid. Our Volt only drives in hybrid mode when we take out-of-town trips and the battery either depletes or we use the "hold" mode. The other 95% of the time, it's all-electric drive just like our LEAF.

    If they don't make a universal way to pay this will never work.. Go to a gas station get gas pay with anything bank card , cash, credit card, debit card. Ev charging stations .. battery dead cant charge cause it doesn't take any of the forms of payment i use or you don't have an account Membership that charges fees with that specific charge station. You also shouldn't need to have a smart phone to pay with ...... just needs to be easy and simple just like it is for getting gas .... also there needs to be a way to make people leave the charger once their car is charged.. either time charge meaning once charged the timer starts and charges per hour after the car has stopped charging or being toed if the car is left to long at a charging station after fully charged . This kinda stuff wouldn't work here in Canada.. it's hard enough to find charging stations to begin with .

  • @EVeverything

    Yes, depending on the charging infrastructure in your area it can me more of a hassle. The ideal setup is to have charging at home, either Level 1 or 2, and these public chargers are more for convenience or in an emergency. I've even seen some apartments with these chargers installed for residents, so that would be an excellent situation for folks who don't have a home or garage to install their own charger. It's certainly developing, but has quite a ways to go to match the convenience of a gas-station fill-up.

  • @EVeverything

    @EVeverything

    @@TheRealLaughingGravy I'd say go with one provider and stick with them. ChargePoint and EVgo seem to be the most common, but in my area it's far and away Chargepoint. Again, with a charger in my garage these public stations are really just for convenience or emergency. I wouldn't enjoy needing to use these for 100% of my charging needs, especially coordinating with other drivers leaving their EV plugged in longer than necessary (hence the Tesla fee for leaving your car past 100% of charge).

  • @EVeverything

    @EVeverything

    3 жыл бұрын

    In general yes, but for smaller batteries it's a more understandable decision to forgo the DC fast charge port. An example would be the new RAV4 Prime, which has a relatively smaller battery and of course bc it's a PHEV it has a gasoline engine backup. But our Outlander PHEV is even a smaller battery and still has a CHAdeMO fast-charge port, so it is a little hit and miss depending which car company you go with. What we really need is a universal system so that all car brands can incorporate them into their electrified vehicles.
