What if I told you that your stock charger does the same, with an adapter.... because the actual charger is inside the car.... that only an external protection unit. :D

Every electric car should come with this kind of versatile connector, like the teslas do.

actually your stock charger is capable of doing 240v. They only ship it with a 120v plug for two main reasons. 1- There is no UE E UV NEMA code that cover electronics that works with 120v and 240v outlets. so they can not legally be sold in US. (with plug from factory) 2- In deep they want you to pay a wall charger install :D Sadly companies need to make stuff "people proof". Specially when it comes to electricity. Thats why new cars limit the 120v charge to 8a, they can do 12 15 and 20a on 120v but they know that people will have a shitty, old, half melted outlet in their house. and probably the worst wiring. and if the house catch fire they will need to fight sues. So, they just limit the current to 8a. The actual charger is inside the car, the external unit is a protection unit, that will measure ground, and will "tell" the car at what outlet is connected to. so it can limit the current drawing. But with an adapter you can charge a 240v on the stock charger (external unit). Thats why you only find this kind of "dual voltage" charger from chinese brands, and nothing local that comes with two plugs from factory. They dont need to obey any law. and they are unbranded so you cant sue them either.

What is the advantage to having both? Is it just so when you travel you can plug into a standard outlet? Or is there another reason?

My friend have bought the charger five month ago, and doesn't work now, I have bought Volt for a week, the charger that came with my car charging for all day long, I'm looking for a ev charger to instead my orginal charger. I search ev charger on Amazon, Juicebox , Simense, Chargepoint, Mustart ,Zencar and Maxgreen seems sells well, which charger do you recommend? and pls help me analysis of advantages and disadvantages about this charger, thank you!

Koman Lee there are guys on youtube who have made adapters to convert the plug on their factory 120v charger to a 240 volt charger. Seems like lots have done it and it works.

it irritates me that he is willing to bullshit and pass it as advice, he has the manner of a know nothing salesman! he says it works automatically, it does not. you set the amps by shaking the charger, if it is not set correctly it will trip your breaker... or worse overheat your electrics and cause a fire!

As I understand it, if one uses the stock 240 volt charging cord from a 240 volt outlet, the EV charges much quicker. So is the EVI (and similar) dual voltage cords really charging the car using 240 volts, or is it just adapting the 240 volts down to 120 and then sending that current on to the EV and charging at the slower rate?

@@sgtnunton all these cables and wall mounted boxes you see online to charge an EV is actually called an EVSE ( Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment ) which all it does is transport the current in a safe manner form your outlet. The guy is right the actual charger is in the vehicle.

I made one myself out of a nissan leaf cable that died. Changed the transformer in the box for a cheap smps out of an old computer power supply. only issue I see with it is that using the adapter means you now have a plug/socket with no temperature monitoring, the standard cables have a thermistor in them that feeds back to the control board so it can shut off if the plug gets hot. they have defeated this feature with this adapted cable, does not meet standards.

Adapter plug should go like this: 240V-->110V. Two problems can occur here. someone plug to wrong appliance and or overheating then fire. If you use, sleep with one eye open and keep from children.

David It does go 240V to 120V at 3:25 in the video. The cord from the EVSE ends in a 240V male twist-lock. There are then two adapters, one to keep it 240V that ends in what appears to be a standard dryer plug, and the other ends in a 120V standard 3-prong plug. No one could possibly plug that twist-lock into anything by mistake without going out of their way to find a receptacle of the same type, then guess what....240V anyway. At 3:40 you can see the two adapters side by side. Only an idiot could screw up and find a way to plug it in wrong.
