Just a note, if you want to really get used to Guard Point timings, use Dante's Charge Blade. Your entire body flashes red when the guard point is up, so it's the perfect tool for learning them.

When you're in savage axe mode, elemental discharge I is actually a loss of damage. Your main form of damage in savage axe should be Rising Slash -> Elemental Discharge II. This gives you the most damage per phial
I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain you are only able to punish when you are not staggered on a block. You have guard 5, making punishing much easier. The guard points are stronger blocks, and less likely to stagger. In other words, the more ranks in guard you have, the less important guard points are for the purposes of punishing.

Ive never spend so much time in the training area just practising these attacks ^^ Great vid, thx man!
Love this weapon, especially its damage output. I don't like to use it too often though. It requires a lot of thinking and paying attention to the weapon as it does to the monster, which can be dangerous unless you're fairly adept with the weapon

You should've used Dante's Charged Blade to explain guard points. It is designed to help you understand them easier by making the body flash every time you GP
After watching maybe a dozen other videos of people seemingly explaining the same thing, I can tell you with certainty that this is by far the best tutorial on how to use Charge Blade. Thank you, good sir. I now understand.
CB is great for covering lots of bases and adapting to the situation. Sometimes, you feel like certain weapons are bad matchups for certain monsters, but the CB has enough options to really use everywhere. You have Sword and Shield mode for more mobility and of course, a good shield. Axe Mode is for huge damage, and for pulling bigger Motion Values. Don’t forget morph attacks, and charging your sword when it might be smarter to play in SnS Mode as opposed to Axe Mode. Depending on phial type, you also get elemental advantages, or KO potential with Impact Phials. Similar to the Switch Axe, if you get into the flow and end up pulling a flashy, uninterrupted combo, it can be hugely rewarding. If you haven’t, be sure to give the CB a shot, it’s super fun. Sincerely, a CB player.
Thanks for the guide. I'm primarily a long sword main, but something about the charge blade that intrigues me. Nice guide.

Thaibe GX you say that you are glad this is dropped for Iceborne: this guide is the pure vanilla CB playstyle, after watching this video I‘m not even sure if he put more than 20 Games into this weapon in Iceborne before dropping it. This is NOT how you play CB in Iceborne, it covers ground basics of the main game.
Thank you - your channel is a treasure trove!
I’m a long sword main and been wanting to learn the CB since I went back to iceborne since I haven’t beat it yet and all my long sword builds on Rise are set just waiting for next update. But this guide is awesome. I always wondered what the axe meant when it’s actually savage axe mode. Thanks bro. Just subbed.
I mastered the great sword...mastered the duel blades. Been learning the long sword but I just got into charge blade ...it's taking a lot of practice but it's been hella fun so far. Can't wait to master it
Amazing video. Thats alot buddy i learnt alot about charge blade. Already in love with the weapon
Moves that have Guard points GP: 1. beginning of Morph slash(the instant the sword is put into the shield) most accesible and easy to time 2. end of Spinning Slash (too long to execute) 3. end of elemental roundslash (basically the same as spinning slash) 4. beginning of savage axe slash (the shield will be in front for a very short window) 5. unsheathing into axe mode 6. end of morph slash (just like spinning slash)
@GriFFonRec4
4 ай бұрын
I'd say the round slash GPs are for safety. If you can land a round slash you are 100% safe from the monster since the GP will protect you until you can act again. The morph slash and savage axe transformation GP are for the ability to cancel INTO a guard point, like if you are in the middle of striking the monster and are vulnerable, you can cancel whatever you are doing into Morph Slash GP/cancel SAED into a GP. So I'd consider the attacks with GP in the starting frames more like parries than actual guard points.
So yeah. I’ve been using this glorious weapon wrong all this time. I needed this. Thank you.
Excellent work man. I appreciate it.
Thanks, I am CHB main for a while and I didn't know I can go back to savage axe mode after charing phials again, that's why I like to watch it even tho I understand the weapon, there's always something new!
Wow I'm fairly new to mhw and I took a liking to the charge blade I thought I was fairly decent with it considering I've only been playing a week or so... i didn't even know you could do half of these things. Adding them to my arsenal has helped tremendously. Thanks a lot! Happy hunting
Note: Guard point don't block elemental attacks, if you have the guard Up skill it will work on stronger attacks but still won't work on elemental attacks like Safi'jiiva Beam or explosives from the ground (like the ring attack), Teostras fire. You"ll get the idea. Is a good way to stop a monster attack and if it hit the head it can stun too.
I've spent a good chunk of time on the charge blade and I learned how to use it by bringing it to hunts instead of looking up a guide.
Very well explained 👍🏻
You can also go into the saed/savage axe/shield charge by holding B or ○ into YB or ^○ twice instead of 3 times. The benefit is it charges the philes faster. So you can save the charge, hold B then YB twice and then charge the shield, the axe, SAED or AED. This helps to go back into savage axe mode faster once you saeded or savage axe ran out.
I could have sworn you mentioned that a part 2 would be coming at some point
I don't see this mentioned in the comment section so: While charging the shield or activating savage axe you don't have to do Y+B as your starter since it moves you forward a substansial amount, you can start with a standard sword slash (Y - Y+B - Y+B - LT/RT)
Thank you so very much for this video!
this is awesome. I like opening w y+b because of the forward lunge. typically if I find myself w phials w charges shield and savage, I’ll charge the sword if I have a moment
This was so helpful thank you oh my god
When wanting to go into Shield Thrust you don’t have to press Y+B before then, you can just press Y and then Y+B to do the shield thrust
Spamming triangle in savage axe mode is so satisfying i stg
I feel that CB is actually one of the simplest weapons in the game. If you are able to utilize its full moveset, especially since the axe moves were buffed in Iceborne, you're basically using it correctly. Guard pointing and counter attacking is such a straightforward concept it only gets more complicated as the monsters get more aggressive. CB has flaws in that the AED and SAED have long recovery animations, so I imagine the higher level application of this is counting stun damage to tell when it is safe to use them. EDIT: Actually I'm wrong, I didn't realize that although Impact Phials deal explosive damage, which is the same regardless of part hit, it will only cause KO if on the head, just like for blunt attacks. I discovered this through the "Hello World" overlay on PC. Maybe everyone knew this, but it's changed how I play. CB is a head-sniping weapon with a good down combo, like a somewhat more defensive and varied hammer.
this helped a lot

@@TheGameconomist also you can try with KO type since impact phial type also has stun damage. I think the increased atk speed buff still applies on iceborne when you charged your sword, you can try testing via weak slash/forward slash + shield trust (infinite loop), I've seen some some CB main use this when they speedrun. Also for the others, fastest way to charge phials is charged rising slash + shield trust (x2) loop. On Guard point, you can also KO monsters with it, KO jewel also work with it (impact phial) and it can also break parts
@pyrotheon4672
4 жыл бұрын
Phials can't crit, they get boosted by the attack stat, you can test for yourself
Hey the part where you guard and you still get to punish it’s because of pushback. You can’t punish if you get pushed back too much. Guard points make it less likely for bigger attacks to push you back too far.
i'm at 40hours in game with chargeblade...finished the story, just began iceborne AND I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW YOU COULD CHARGE SHIELD/SWORD/AXE! My life is now much easier thank to you!
If your shield is already charged(glowing) and your phials are empty but they are brown or any color. At the same time you want to charge your phials(make the phials turn white) you can also charge your sword(make it glow) meaning you are filling your phials(making them turn white) and charge your sword (make it glow). That way you can fill your phials and charge your sword in one go.
Another way I prefer to get to the SAED is triangle -> circle + triangle -> circle + triangle, the initial hit doesn't move you forward as much so I find it better to avoid overshooting the monster
I was trying charge blade on mh4u and when the word "charge" is next to the vials the sword bounces. What's going on in this situation?
I’d have watched two hours of you teaching me, thank you senpai I shall go be a stronger monster hunter now because of you

I have hundreds of hours on CB and recently I found you can press down+Y instead of the saed for impact CBS.😅
I remember trying SOOOO hard to learn to play this weapon by forcing myself into hunts with it... even with MR gear, I could barely do HR hunts... then I took it into the training room, and I finally learned how to charge the shield and sword lmao
When I started using this weapon a few days ago, I was farming the Odoragon, didn't really have the best gear aside from Dear Lutemia... that was fun hehe. I'm 30hs in, loving it so far 😀
I’ll be honest, as an absolute beginner this video is so perfect and explains everything so clearly. Thank you very much
One thing to mention about going into SAED manually is that using Y+B to start moves you forward. if you want to use SAED from the position you started without moving too much, you can use only Y to stay in place and go into the usual path of Y+B Y+B. using only Y might also be a little bit faster than using Y+B, though im not 100% sure of that
@verynice0123
4 жыл бұрын
yeah, i always used this instead of Y+B, Y+B, Y+B. And it is indeed a bit faster
in the base game my two favorite weapons where charge blade and hammer, like both ends of the complexity spectrum. I started Iceborn with hammer and really like it because you can manage the softening really easily, since it is just the head and hammer damage doesn't really on a combo. I just saw you explain the damage cycles of charge blade and I remenbered how even with the old moveset you had certain windows with optimal damage you didn't want to miss. Now if you have to soften the important parts and manage your weapon cycles... I am not ready for this.
I'm disagreeing politely on the "It's impact phials so we must use Savage axe" line. SAED and SA are highly situational. Maybe something along the lines of Small opening (Punishing moves) - AED Big opening (Exhausts, trips)- SAED Huge opening (KOs) - Savage Axe would make more sense to new players. That isn't the end of it thanks to Hitzone values and the individual monsters but it's a good starting point. If you want to watch someone play it in a comprehensible way that can teach you a ton about CB in your own hunts go watch AkantoreX. He does TA speedruns and has taught me a lot about hot to *think* with your weapon. Your weapon keeps you alive. Trust your weapon.

As a CB main and 700hrs into the game, I can tell you that CB is the most diverse and versatile weapon to use as it has one of the highest dps and the ability to shield + guard point to deal KO damage to the monster. You can guard point the monster's roar and counter it with the SAED slam which is incredible so you wont ever need earplugs. Knowing guard point is the most important thing as you will have to learn the monster's moves as well while you're learning the weapon itself, probably the reason why alot of people stay away from it. I can give you a few biggest tips for you guys not to afraid to use it :) 1) SAED (Super amped elemental discharge) will deal higher dps as you can discharge it faster than the Savage Axe Mode with faster transitioning 2) Savage Axe Mode is only viable if you want to take down smaller monster (Kirin, Rajang....etc) because they have such a small body and hit zone value, you won't hit all of your 6 phials (assuming you have the magazine jewel, which you should). Or to try to hit a flying monster with the forward axe slam or uppercut. Savage axe mode will increase the damage of the initial hit of your SAED but it's really slow so might as well like I said above just discharge unless you're waking up a monster for that multiplier. I was able to achive 1005* damage on the initial hit, 400 followed up when you slammed it down and 150x6(phials) damage to the monster when it's sleeping. THAT'S ALOT OF DAMAGE -bonus: if you're in Savage Axe, hit Y or Triangle then combo it with B or O (xbox or ps), that's a 2 for 1 since you're only consuming 1 phial but swinging the axe 2 times to get the 2 discharged out 3) Learn the 3 most important guard points as it's IMPORTANT. Guard point is whenever you're transitioning either from SnS to Axe or the other way around and having your shield facing the monster with very tiny window so you'll have to be PRECISE. Once the monster hit that guard point, chances are you're actually dealing KO damage. 4) if the monster is down but you dont have any phials and need to charge it up to get the SAED down. Press B or O on PlayStation and left analog down to backward slash then slam down your SAED, trust me it's alot faster than having to roll backward, plus you'll have less movement and can position yourself better to get a full out of your SAED slam 5) Guard up is optional but it's good to have if you're playing defensively or you're not using any dragon damage weapon to prevent Elder Dragons from using their super nova
@SS2LP
4 жыл бұрын
Thunder Lordz Eh technically savage axe is better on certain builds. I just consider it less viable as you need much larger openings for it to do its damage. Going pound for pound with 6 phials savage axe will actually do about double the damage but again you need a huge opening to do that damage. SAED and AED are better for damage while the monster is up and active. Also savage axe eats sharpness for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
@SeraphimVolker

Back in 4 Ultimate I used axe mode a lot because that's where your dps came from, but with World I've been focusing on using it almost like the lance is used. I stick with sword mode a lot except when there's a good SAED punish. Using guard points has allowed me to always be dealing damage and have amazing defense thanks to my guard skill and having the shield charged. I like to keep the savage axe and just up slash down slash in axe mode. That move set can catch tails and heads of any monster for almost 100 damage a pop if it isn’t armored. Then let the SAED smash a stunned or downed monster. Very useful as a solo player.
Where is the follow up videos about positioning?
Unless I’m wrong using a GP gives you another level of guard. The shield charge gives another level thereby making one level of guard on the build give you guard three. And three levels on the build give guard five.
@KrubKrum
4 жыл бұрын
Charged shield gives +2 to guard and Guard point gives +2. That’s why you see a lot of builds with guard 1, because charged shield and a GP gives you Guard 5. What people don’t know, if you have Guard 5 and a charged shield and a guard point it actually gives you Guard 9.
About the shield thrust you can also go into it after any attack in SnS mode except for the shield thrust.
Did you ever make the second part to this video

Is there a follow up video to this one?
I thought i was learning a new weapon, not quantum physics o.o
So I love the charge blade, I main the life out of this weapon on it's rusted to dust. But I think you need to specify each of the guard points and where there located during move sets.
You forgot to mention my favourite new route after a guard point introduced in Iceborne: GP -> Slinger burst -> Elemental discharge 2. It's fast, and lets you go from sns mode straight to the savage axe bnb from a gp. It's awesome. (also if ythe slinger ammo is a staggering type, its opens up the monster so aiming at the head is even easier)
Been play mhw since the release and I use CB quit a lot and still I have a lot to learn on this hahahaha thanks men
guard point prevents that knockback animation if the guard skill in 0 or not high enough. having guard skill prevent that massive stamina drain but normal guard point at perfect timing prevents that knock back of normal block guard and then go back into punishment mode with Amped Element Discharge, doing that on monster head just flinches it , it feels good. this is my first monster hunter game and i am 200 hours into it. started with charge blade and using this on keyboard and mouse just feels good than any other weapon due to memorizing the control. and now i am just getting to LBG for sticky so that i can break that head of everwyrm. otherwise i would just do the bomb run to break the head.
Where are the other two guides?
Was just watching a previous Livestream of yours, had no idea your from missouri, same fam. Stay safe and I hope you can find butt paper, Springfield and republic are bone dry
Ill add that its better to end a combo with a shield uppercut over a spinning attack. The shield uppercut has the highest amount of damage, builds extra charge and stacks up KO damage.
I learned how to use this in the field
I learned charge blade by thinking of it as IAMTHEBOSS now. Like you have different phases as you fight. First is charge phials by attacking and ends by locking them in and charging the blade, then recharge the phials and sword if possible and decide on how you want to attack. I usually try to get the chainaxe (as I like to call it) going but fast jumpy monsters are best to knock over first. And that full phial blast is amazing yet hard to land
some bits i did not know about the charge blade. literally nearly everything. i only knew you could charge the shield.
Fantastic video and teaching method. I played CB for years but im just now returning to mhw with my friends. This was an awesome refresher!
As a charge blade main I always love hearing people say it’s the most complicated weapon when to me every phase of using a charge blade is like second nature to me. Like I know it’s to the point where I don’t even have to see my character it’s all down to the point where I’m my head I know all the timings for perfectly charging sword and shield and the timings on switching between axe and shield and all things like that. Like I’ll b in the monsters guts slicing and charging and just the timing is an instinct at this point.
I really like this weapon but I'm having issues of when to gaurd point i try the triangle r2 on ps4 but always end up getting wrecked by the monsters i still havnt figured out the rolling i frame dodge yet
Nice videos
Just as a caveat to the guard point/punish comment at ~21:12. It depends on the animation. You can punish without guard point on a weak attack, but you cannot punish without it if it is a powerful attack. Think enemies like Diablos and Rathalos. Their attacks will force you into an animation unless you use guard point, which prevents you from countering with your axe or sword right away.
is the savage axe only for master mode?
