Having multiple attempts for your character is an absolute must... But only if you are working in a group on a project or designing the character for someone else and need to give them options. If not it's totally up to you. If you fall in love with the first attempt then by all means. Your videos are a revelation. Thanks for sharing your way of creating... You're awesome.

I was always given the impression that to be a "good" character designer, you have to make at least 5 different iterations of the character(s) you wanna make and that always messed with me bc I was always the type to know where I wanted my designs to go and settle on just one, if even two, iterations to make a 'completed' character design. I'm so glad to hear you say things like this bc it makes me feel better that what I'm doing is also good haha.

yes!! that's exactly why i wanted to talk about it x'D There's different ways of going about things. I've had character design jobs where you do SOOOO many random tweaks that make like... no signnifcant difference whatsoever in the end, and I also found that sometimes when you change a bunch of stuff and have a million different people weight in, the end result is an incoherent mess. If you're doing it for yourself only - do whatever pleases you ;DDD

I like how you talk about your characters from a "relationship with each other" perspective. I guess as an introvert I start out seeing my characters as individuals, which isn't the best starting point for getting an interesting group of characters. I'm also working on a graphic novel. It is a lot of work. And when I realized I had to draw a character that appears for a few pages once, I was like "Who has that kind of time!?"

I’m not sure if you purposely set out to do this but either way one of the biggest reasons you’re my art and style inspiration is that you’re really great at diversifying your characters. I am really excited to see the characters and story of Gloamingvale!!!

Maybe it's cause I'm not great at design but I usually need to do several attempts. There's something I find weak in them, not because I'm self doubting but because it is. Whether that be silhouette or colour or the themes I'm going for. I guess everyone has a different process so that's interesting to see. I like to tweak to see what elements stand out more especially thematically. This was fun to watch though. Also I totally get the unconditional love thing. Some of my ocs are such bastards but what can I say, I'm a mother 💀.

I like how you think, I do believe that people fall into the misconceptions that making something more rigorous means a better outcome. The truth is if you have a vision or vibe you’re specifically looking to design then you can nail it the first time with the possibility of a few small tweaks here and there. My overall goal in design is the vibe.

  • @therealplaguedoctor

Drawing down a character once and calling it a day is not used often in practice, and most professional artists have prototypes that feature the core elements of the character, and are changed during the process to reach the most ideal outcome. Personally, I like to imagine my characters in every possible way before I even begin drawing them so I don't necessarily need to draw prototypes of it, and I only end up with the end product and no "unnecessary" byproducts. The second option can also be helpful however, as I can lift some wanted elements and take it to another character's desing while making the most out of the character I'm working on

I always feel so guilty as an artist because my first draft is always my final draft, and I always draw the same couple of characters over and over again because I feel connected to them! my OC's are important to me, and I have a hard time drawing 'random people' because of it, and it was nice finding another artist who feels similar! =)

Aside from what you just told me, I have absolutely know idea what your series is about bc I cause happened on this video, but I am thoroughly invested in Remy and Kali’s relationship. Idk what it was, but I just knew there was something going on and was debating throughout this whether that side glance you drew him with was coincidental or not. I’m glad it isn’t 😂 (Size difference and more or less introvert/extroverts are my fav, I eat that shit up ❤️) Really great video! There’s a lot of good insight and overall different thought process than what I typically see for artist/character designing, I.e going with the first design. Looking forward to seeing more videos on these characters and this series! ❤️

it was really interesting seeing your design process! i adore how clean your line art is with your style it really makes it pop. when i saw the thumbnail i got excited because i like seeing how people design uniforms and make it to fit each character. i was worried because when i first saw and heard about the characters i thought they were going to fall into the stereotype not just of the nerd or jock but race/coded wise too that often go in tandem with those. specifically with kali, remy, and bathazar. it sounds like you put a lot of thought into them to maybe subvert that? or it would be nice to see you take it somewhere deeper either way i hope it continues. i didnt know you had a comic before so ill definitely have to check it out!

I loved your thoughts on design :) working on my own characters I feel a constant aftertaste of worry when I get a character in one iteration, even when I love the design. But you're totally right- you don't make a character so much as discover them, like how a sculptor sees a form in a lump of uncarved rock :) It really does feel like you're unearthing their personality when it comes to adding details. I loved how you could see the whole story of Noel straightening her curly hair simply in the lines for her flyaways. Their extra volume and curls away from her hair shape gave a subtle hint away, even if you didn't think of it consciously whilst drawing >

Thanks for the insight! When I design characters for comics I tend to do one or two sketches just to get a feel for the body shape, costume and proportions. The rest can take care of itself as I draw the story. I really like your idea of understanding the character before you get started- all the details about your characters’ habits with clothes and accessories were spot on!

Idk if you’ll ever read this, but ai just wanted to say that all this attention you put in posing your character really pays off, because I could tell most of what you said about them just from the illustration. I went “OBVIOUSLY” several times in the video while side eyeing characters ahaha. I could even tell that Remi likes Cali genuinely but she doesn’t know/isn’t interested while Balthazar is into Noelle in a purely superficial way. Your knowledge of your characters really comes through and it’s super interesting:)

I also have that intuitive way of drawing characters, but wow you know alot about your characters before drawing them, i mostly have a feeling to the characters i want to draw, attitude and maybe proportion and the rest comes after. So trying to figure out how they look and feel is much earlier on my character creation process

i disagree entirely. experimenting and creating multiple designs is honestly my favourite part! just doodling around with siloutettes and messy sketches of a huge variety of designs is way more fun on just pulling smth out of my ass and sticking to it. it usually just ends with me redesigning it later lol. You're a very experienced artist so I dont doubt you get fantastic results, but a lot of my classmates first idea, and the idea they refuse to deviate from, aren't as good as when they made at the very least 3 designs. its not like you have to completely polish 20 designs, just doodling some loose ideas are enough! Bonus is when i like one of designs and can re-use it for another character

Loved this video so much! Awesome art, and characters!!! I've always got inspiration for characters from the most weirdest things at times. Though the one who is my most favorite out of anything I've ever done, or ever will do. Is the main character to a comic I started drawing as a kid. I had also put him in the little game I did with friends in programming class, back in the day... The character was actually an imaginary friend I created when I was about 5. My brother and I would make up characters, and pretend they'd go on adventures in space, visiting different stars... Though slightly ashamed to admit it, the character was an imaginary friend up until I was about 20, though like all of my characters I treat them all as real people.. When creating their personalities and back stories, I would think of it as them sitting in front of me and telling me about themselves, and about the world they are from, or era.. I used to think I was weird, but I had learned the creator of Conan the Barbarian did the same thing, as well as Stan Lee a bit with Peter Parker, and the creators at SNK, so I had stopped feeling weird about that.. I used to heavily doubt my designs, like big time! But a few things happened, which have made me completely stop doing that. The first was a random person online back in 2010, telling me the style and just the way the character looked, he couldn't explain, but it made him feel good. I thought that was so very awesome, it made me cry. The other was actually over the summer of 2021.. I had finished the redesign of the main character, in 2016/2018, even using Final Fantasy Comrades to make him my avatar.. Any game where you're given the option to make your own character, I always make him, as close as I can.. He looked 98% of how I had always seen him in my head, and how he was drawn.. It was so very wild! In 2021 when I saw the way they made Star Lord look in the Guardians of the Galaxy game, I got so excited because he looked quite a bit like my character, the mech-like boots which I had seen someone actually trying to make in real life. his hair, which was a lot like my friend's the jacket was different as I was far more inspired to draw the jacket my character wore in Tom Clancy's the Division.. It was a navy blue military jacket, which fit one of the themes of the character as he's always been a soldier. He doesn't use two pistols though, but a Gunblade, very sci-fi military, though also influenced by the sword Angurvadal, He calls the weapon "Violent Grace".. But I got so excited, that I had to buy the game the day it came out which I know is a stupid reason, but I didn't care and my brother and I loved the comics when we were kids so lol.. I couldn't play it though I won't lie, the voices and some of the acting annoyed me.. But I was just so happy to see something that looked close to what I did. I have now completely 100% stopped doubting myself, and feel more confident. Space, or Star Viking was his other theme. In the story in the year 2079, when we start really exploring space more, there is a movement that starts called, "Neo Viking". I had even created a style of metal music, which some often play to tell their stories of the adventures and encounters they've experienced. I had called it "Rekkr Metal", and being a huge fan of metal, I wrote music and songs for him. He is also the lead guitarist, and Vocalist in his Rekkr metal band , "Drengr". His secondary weapon is actually his guitar, which is an Infinite Frequency Manipulator or, IFM. It is a sonic weapon that allows one to hone harmonic energy for harmonic attacks. Because of these alien powers he receives, he is able to use his mind to briefly create physical augmented reality inspired by a riff he plays from his songs.. One of them called "Fear Crusade", inspires his wolf Fylgja to turn into a massive scary beast. He names his guitar "Violent Resonance", and of course metal music is his third theme.. The character was never a human fully.. He was part alien, cause I was scared of aliens as a kid, I had also thought the Replicants in Blade Runner were aliens when I was a child, and so he was given alien heritage.. He is part of an ancient artificial alien race, which was finally named when I was about 16, I called them "Zayin". It just means weapon in old Hebrew, and that is what he basically is, a living weapon. But he has a gene mutation, that will eventually put him into a state of indiscriminate viciousness, and craves only constant destruction until there is nothing left. He has a mask created for him, called "Berserker's Grimr", that allows him to retain his sanity, whenever he becomes his third weapon called "Weapon of Sovereign Ruination, True Arsenal form Righteous Violence" lol. My close friend who was killed in Iraq in 2013, really loved the character. So I had given him some of his personality, and even his haircut, and it was nice to know he saw that, before he left us.

I know personally i have a strong ideation when it comes to alot of charcater concepts i do meaning i tend to do less iteration, im working towards making a project i can use as the backbone of my portfolio for the video game industry and iteration is something i hear all the time, however like you pointed out i think it depends from project to project how you go about designing characters. When its a personal or self lead project its what you want, when its a project within a company its what the higherups and clients want. But ive heard time and time again from the industry that no concept is “bad” there are only concepts which go with or against the criteria youre given to make them, i think youve really tapped into what your work needs of you its always nice to have that level of certainty in your work.

I don't know why I love your art style so much maybe cuz your lines are so confident and attractive to me. Also I was drawing while listening to this, I'm already drawn to the lanky guy hahahaha.

Your style is so refreshing, the line art is simply amazing. I don't know why but it kind of reminds me of Tetsuya Nomura´s art, not the same but it has that something that makes it special.

I love your character designs cause I could already get a lot of information about them just from their design and when you started telling us about them, that only confirmed my assumptions. also yes I love you talking about them. they're lovely!

Thank you for this video, it's a chance ( for me ) to have artist like you who gives honest advices about drawing. Also, thank you for showing the sketching process ^^ it's really interesting and stuning ! Keep going cause your work is IMPRESSIVE and Delightful 😊🤩👍👍. PS : if you can, could you do in the future à video about Line art and how you give this.... dynamisme ! This is something that can ( in my personal opinion) à good subject, but ofc no pressure :) 👍

This art is completely different, like I ever seen befor. (Completely awesome, of course) And you are, as I can see, very professional in your subject, because I need for one character maybe 10 hours and you maybe for 6, 3 or fewer hours. =D I can more learn from you! Beste Grüße! Globe

I see someone doing a simply character design for their own story *slaps the tutorial etiquette* xDDD Hahaha, I was really struggling witht his! Because I have a general idea about my characters and in EVERY VIDEO about OC they made a lot of trials and I was like "b-but I do KNOW how I want them look *sweats profuselly*"

Same!!! I really only draw my Character design once depending how developed their character it. I also only draw characters that have stories- I find it difficult to draw characters just for design purposes ✨

Your art style is fascinating and beautiful. I only started drawing in earnest this year but have been making great progress. I've still not discovered my style yet (I really love American graphic novel styles, especially noir comics), but I'm not sure yet. I'm still experimenting. My problem is that I'm someone who edits in Word with the corrections hidden, if that makes sense. So my artwork still lacks some life even though I know what I should be doing. It's just hard to let go and do it. I'll get there, though. Anyway, your work is great.

i definitely agree with that... i draw with my characters personally in mind, not my own colors and all...ill even draw with colors outfits etc i personally dont care for for myself but feel that the characters would like if they asked ne to draw them.
