I would argue that the concept of banking model is oversimplified. Nobody would argue today that in a proper university we use the banking model. Homework, teaching assistants, discussion sections, tutors, office hours, questions and answers are all recognized as being as important if not more than sitting in class. All of these are opportunities for students to be active in the learning process. However, I would then respond that Freire’s goal is not really pedagogical but political… obviously.

I'm a college student! HW, TA's, sections, etc. all certainly help me learn a lot! They feel more like technologies to help me learn though and don't stand in contrast to the banking model, which is just a criticism of the hierarchy of teachers over students. So far, I've only had one or two classes where my teacher gave me some control over my curriculum. In general though, especially with general education or required courses for my major, I don't really have a choice in what I'm learning, teachers have huge power over me, and the best I can do is hope they're nice.

@@elishi6805 i wouldn’t call it power. I would call it authority. What makes you think that you can make better curricular decisions than someone who is an expert on the field? I am sorry but if I am learning physics I want to leave the curriculum decisions to people who have been doing it for decades and I am fine with handing them authority over me. As long as the hierarchy is just and I can also climb it by my own efforts. Wouldn’t you agree that by going to college you also are climbing a hierarchy and that in a just society that is a hierarchy of authority and expertise and competence and merit? Not just power?

@@elishi6805 But the deeper issue here is that this book has nothing to do with knowledge and education as we understand it. It is purely a political book that has to do with waking people up about systems of oppression and turning them into activists. It has nothing to do with education.

Hi there! As I read the text I was wondering… how did such a subversive text, one which holds that the values of western civilization are a myth… make it into the world of education? Is it a feature of liberal education that it accepts ideologies that end up subverting it?

I can't subscribe because you're mixing up critical theory with music. Please make two separate channels.
