Just trying to imagine the ecological toll 1 billion Americans would have. Just the environmental destruction from the newly necessitated residential development would make Chernobyl look like nothing. Combined with the carbon footprint, agrarian development, and general pollution, it could bring about the complete extinction of all multicellular life.

Yglesias is so astonishingly dimwitted he has no idea how ludicrous and foolish it all is. So clueless he publishes this. On purpose. For everyone to see. How stupid he is. Amazing.

I don't think it should be as much as increased population as population density. We'd be better off concentrating the population around urban areas, while changing wasteful consumption habits and shifting urban design towards being vmore dense, while leaving all the small towns to nature, completely abandoning them.

Population density too LOW?! Oh, forever more... I became worried in the 1960's about US overpopulation and urban sprawl. Our loss of productive farmland, as well as the loss of the uncrowded spaces that I so treasure(d). I was kind of thankful at the time that we hadn't (yet) reached numbers like those of China and India. I've been depressed about population for years. And now this crap. I don't feel all that much better after having finally given up hope. But I am relieved that I'm now very old and I'm almost dead. WASFingFed.

They wouldn’t knock out Central Park to build their shit Playskool condos with plastic climbing and rappelling walls, (“nature” currently suits their socio-optic hobbies), no instead they’d knock out historic architecture in a socioeconomically diverse area. And to feel good about it they’ll get some consulting firm to hire an art firm to paint a Unity/History mural on the five story rectangular condo/Medspa/elite daycare for infants prefab monstrosity.

26:00 ish - quoting the most well-known and well-used quotes in history has to my biggest pet-peeve. it absolutely SCREAMS, "while i am trying desperately to sound like i know something i couldnt be bothered to actually read or spend any other efforts educating myself", which implies they dont care about the truth-seeking intellectually-honest process required for meaningful inquiry. not to mention the amount of famous quotes are perched out of their historical and informational context (MLK's "I Have A Dream" and Adam Smith's "invisible hand" are the 2 most egregious examples i wish to nominate for the most abused of all time, thoughts?)

@@jacobcurley4742 sorry, should have been more clear - there is nothing wrong with using popular famous sayings as long as they are used in the correct context. one requirement of successfully doing this is to use the popular phrase in a manner consistent with the original author's message. this is violated by the political right frequently now days through MLK's "i have a dream" line in attempts to ignore racial injustice in US society. as far as Adam Smith's "invisible hand", a term used all over the place to justify laisse-faire "free-market" based failed neo-liberal economics, users conveniently leave out Smith's passage found a few paragraphs down the page about the "vile maxim of the masters of mankind" which is "all for me, none for thee". Smith's point was about how markets and economies should be "freed" from the economic "rentiers" - those extracting rent, interest, and other fees that add nothing in the way of social benefit (or, incomes received without matching production costs) - and driven by real production and consumption beneficial to society. this is a FAR cry from how Smith's famous "invisible hand" statement is used today. in fact it is used to justify exactly the opposite of what he had in mind when he wrote it... im also not implying and elitism in assuming everyone should have done the "required reading". i am assuming, however, that those with a public voice that speak with an assumed authority stemming from a claimed expertise in a subject have done the required reading or, at least, take the time to make sure they are using their quotes honestly and correctly. it is not that everyone should be expected to have spent the time to be an expert on all matters effecting society. im actually saying the opposite, that everyone for whom those not well-versed listen to be expected to not mislead and take the time to actually consume the material in which their claimed authority is supposedly derived from... you got it twisted holmes and the people my criticism is directed at are deserving of it! intellectual cowardice, laziness, and incompetence starts wars and kills millions, people guilty of these traits should not only be criticized but held in vicious unrelenting contempt...

Is a big, big problem with Matt’s take. They aren’t enough white people that ever existed on planet earth to build that level of density. So, you have to depend on non-whites. Even if you can convince them to be second class citizens inside of an elite minority woolly ship, that wouldn’t last more than a few generations due to numbers. The birth rates of white people pacifically and just people living in the western world regardless of their race is a negative birth rate. This goes to say that this book in the eyes of people who more likely would never watch this channel or read Matt’s book, Is that it’s simply white explaining pontification on how to preserve power. Good luck with that fellas.

It's more like having a billion people with all the bad habits of Americans would fuck the world. We waste a huge amount of food, electricity, water, and fuel just as we are. A billion Americans means either a huge wave of deprivation and desperation at home, or an increased drive to overexploit the rest of the world to make ourselves comfortable. The true fix to the immigration issue would be to stop interfering with other nations politics, aside from investment and stabilizing missions. Not a lot of immigrants I know would've left if they could Iive at home while making a living wage.

Now, you can with have a stance that these and any folks should be allowed to enter freely, no matter their reason or you support some restrictive regime that treats, especially poor immigrants, like second class citizens and uses hypervigilant security to keep them out.

A direct quote from Mattys book is “we must decide which kind of immigrants to let in”… this is blatantly anti immigration disguised as pragmatic immigration policy. He wants to create an even more classist american state with only the most useful, exploitable, and american-soluble immigrants inside of it.
