Maybe the reason Chaotic fans prop up the “4Kids Lawsuit” story isn’t just because research is hard, but because they don’t want to accept that the product they have so much nostalgia for just… didn’t catch on.

It's one of those shames when you learn your niche series you like as a kid wasn't actually that popular. So you make up reasons for it's unpopularity instead of accepting that you were a big fan in a really small fanbase.

Well, this was unexpectedly sobering. But I think I can offer some insight on why the lawsuit theory might’ve caught on so damn much in the surviving Chaotic fandom despite not actually being true. My brother and I were both huge fans of the show and card game, and for me in particular it was an outright special interest/hyperfixation. So, perhaps unfortunately for me, I was under no delusions about how popular it Chaotic wasn’t, because I desperately kept searching for someone IRL besides my brother who even knew it existed, and was forced to resign myself to online friends. I *knew* Chaotic was only moderately successful, for a while I’d try to drag anyone who’d lend an ear into engaging with it so it could keep going. When I started seeing it advertised outside of 4kids I thought it was about to finally really catch on and was excited, only for Chaotic to seemingly vanish off the face of the earth out of nowhere. And it did feel really sudden, while I had trouble finding people who liked it, I didn’t have trouble finding the cards at least in stores like Target. The selection was small but they were there. And then all of a sudden they just, weren’t. I was confused for a long time, but eventually I just concluded that it just wasn’t popular enough. I was still a teenager at the time and talking to strangers online was scary, and when Chaotic vanished I ended up drifting away from the forums because there wasn’t new content to make the online interaction worth the risk. I was sad about it but eventually I had to move on. For the longest time while I was absolutely critical of 4kids and their localization being nothing more than a polite term for censorship, I never really saw them as evil for that. They weren’t the only ones guilty of that crap at the time, they were just the particularly extreme and *stupid* examples. Chaotic however was always the one thing I couldn’t help but give them credit for. And then about a decade after the fact I start watching retrospective videos from creators I *thought* were trustworthy and I “find out” about this supposed lawsuit, yeah I did turn on 4kids because Chaotic *was* the one good thing I thought they did, and then it seemingly turns out they screwed Chaotic over right when it counted most. And thinking they screwed Chaotic over was what made me jump on the ‘4kids is evil’ bandwagon. This comment is getting too long but Chaotic very much has a special place in my heart regardless of its quality, because it’s what led me to discover a passion for storytelling, I went from hating English with a burning passion, to writing being one of my biggest creative outlets. I might not be who I am today if Chaotic had never existed, so thinking 4kids basically killed the franchise out of greed just immediately evaporated the tentative amount of good will I had. But now that it’s being all laid out, yeah, this really does go to show why you need to think critically about everything, *including criticism.* I am feeling a little red faced for being so easily swayed out of the most logical conclusion without even thinking to check the sources. All that said, it still doesn’t change how much fondness I have for this series. And I do hope Bryan Gannon gets the revival off the ground, I do think the lore aspect is actually one of its biggest selling points. I got into the game because I loved how it felt like I was getting peaks into a whole different world through the cards, the creatures felt alive in a way that a lot of other card game monsters just don’t. And I hope the show gets revived with the animation and art direction it deserves. My only opinion with the game is that we spent ages trying to find a copy of the stupid thing, only to realize too late our Wii had freaking died and couldn’t read discs anymore. If they ever try to make another one I hope they do more justice to the exploration aspect, since “learning” about Perim is probably one of the main drives to engage with this franchise.

In reality, none of this was true. No such bug exists, and none of the coding for the bug to happen exists in the game. Though there was a fandom joke about Gandhi loving nukes, it came from the fact that opposing AIs in early games would add "Our words are backed with NUCLEAR WEAPONS!" to their communications once they researched the technology, and people thought it was funny to see Gandhi say that. Gotta love how despite all its flaws and its sad fate, for everyone who experienced it, this thing is still stuck in a dark corner of the mind, just waiting to be remembered. From a non-american (alo Brasil) perspective, the show popped up at night in an obscure channel alongside Yu-Gi-Oh GX, Dinosaur King and Inazuma Eleven (one of these is not like the others), and so I had friends who were aware of it to a degree before it just fell off the map. Years later, I scroll through KZread and find full episodes being posted and it feels like an SCP broke containment and exposed itself so it couldn't be dragged back into the box again. Truly, Chaotic will live forever.

One Piece makes sense, but lets not act like there just misunderstood angels who were cast down. They have there problems. Im not blaming one guy either, rather the company as a whole. I was OBSESSED with Chaotic as a kid I loved this game! On DS The motion controls killed it for me because it’s hard to point at the creatures with the wiimote when they keep bobbing up and down and don’t stop attacking I really hope we get a continuation of the show someday

I adored Dracco Heads as a kid to the point where I even owned that weird music CD, yet somehow never realized that this Chaotic thing were supposed to be their Successor. I can certainly see why I never saw a connection, as this is a far cry from the charmingly goofy cartoon blobs of the original run.

I was introduced to Chaotic through the show and really liked it, and while I did learn about the card game years later I never played it, nor do I remember seeing any stores stocking them. I especially didn't know so many video games existed of it. I had always wondered what happened to it and now I do. As for the lawsuit I only vaguely remembered it but it's been so long I'd pretty much forgotten about it entirely. Interesting to know it was false though. Hopefully the series can make a good comeback in the future as it's pretty unique honestly. Regardless though thanks for the video, I learned a lot. P.S. Regarding the games scanning mechanic and how it handles monsters, believe it or not that's actually lore accurate as in the show there was an instance where Tom needed to scan Maxxor again after losing the copy he had, but when he did he got the version of him that was in an unstable and fear filled state at the time.

This series really came and went when I grew up with 4Kids and the game you're talking about really speaks to how done dirty it was but hey glad it has a future maybe, also its very shocking to see Project X Zone be used in not only music but in actual footage as despite me actively hating on that series much like RadicalSoda does with Sonic Forces, I am glad it does keep popping up

Yeah I figured this comment was made before watching the video lol. Sorry that Chaotic just never really caught on. I believe I was already a teen or preteen and therefore "too cool" for these collectible toys/games. Definitely seemed pretty ambitious with it's story telling. I do like the concept of the same creatures having varying stats as well. At least there may be hope for it in the future.

The funniest part about this entire thing to me specifically is that they renamed the one guy Maxxor, so every time I hear his name I just go "holy shit it's popular youtuber max0r" Great vid, as always, but hearing that name briefly took me out. Like, spiritually. I felt like I left my body for a split second.

If you're looking to discuss more 4kids properties that were surprisingly popular for a time but just kinda went away after a while but are still big with circles, how about Ultimate Muscle? The show that's actually a sequel show to a japan only series that's got a continuation going on in Netflix this year(next month, even!) Here's a fun bit of trivia that I am 90% sure you'll enjoy digging into, it was so much more popular in the west than in the east that when 4kids ran out of footage, they commissioned an entire season to keep it going. Let me repeat that: 4Kids took money out of their own pockets to commission the animation studio to adapt an entire season's worth of content so they can have the final battle between the hero and his edgy rival.

Yeah, the lawsuit is absolute bullshit
