December 1985 was one of the most dangerous times in Uganda’s history, for the country was now divided into two. One area was controlled by President Tito Okello’s Military Council government, the other by Yoweri Museveni’s rebel National Resistance Movement. Kampala City was also divided among five allied armies, which could also fight each other. The Military Council was a union of the government army, UNLA and rebel groups that had been fighting the Obote regime. These included Dr. Kayiira’s UFM, Lt. Col. Nkwanga’s FEDEMU, Brig. Ali’s UNRF, Maj. Gen. Lumago’s FUNA along with some other smaller armed groups. Peace talks between Military Council and NRM were going on in Nairobi while fighting was also raging mainly at Katonga Bridge. This is when this press conference took place, amidst accusations that government had imported Sudanese mercenaries called Anya-Nya to help crush Museveni’s NRA. That all these armies later united under the NRM only came after NRA captured power in January 1986, which is another story. For now, here is a dose of the chaos that prevailed during Gen. More than 35ys ago? Long before M7 regime. But Tito Okello was a true nationalist, he called all the Guliras outs for peace talks

The headline does not go together with the headline of the story, I realized there are more than one force here trying to reconcile and talk peace here, so media must learn to be responsible in giving information.

But this. regime was just punicing after seeing that they had remained few in number.

He was a big man(over all boss) and usually, they delicate just like the way Kayira wasn't there himself. They like joining in after thorough assessment of the situation and seriousness of the process.

Anyanya means world war/warriors in Dinka language, similar to wakombozi in Swahili.

Did this group have a resolved agenda at all?

Most of them We're northerners

The reality is that these illirates really wanted peace for Uganda, imagine with all the mad-slingings and labelling, these are the only two generals who invited all fighting forces of Uganda to come together to talk peace and they actually sat down with all of these groups. They told Ugandans that theirs was a transitional goverment of only one year, but one where all Ugandans had to leave their fighting and come out to participate in a democratic process where Ugandans decide. Well, the liberators that we supported in Luwero are the only ones who refused to come out, they hoodwinked the generals and the rest, by demanding for talks outside Uganda, the rest came to Uganda and these two generals sat down with them and gave them the freedom to participate in their govt and daily life. Well, the literate liberators took over power and murdered every single rebel group in the country, including their comrades Kayira (FEDEMU) who had joined the Okellos. Ugandans cheered them, they were the literate liberators and they were the true democrats who came to save us from our past. The past had the best education, the best hospitals, the best civil service and jobs were reflective of all regions of Uganda. But the past was rulled by killers and illitrates who knew nothing. Then why are we crying now, let us enoy the liberation that the litrates borught us. For some of us, the opportunity to sit down as Ugandans as was being advocated by these two illitrate generals will never come back to Uganda, and Ugandans will life to regret this missed opportunity. They were very forgiving and had Uganda at heart.
