You're a crafty fella. Thanks for the ideas on this! My 89 Vettes got some seals that are going. ARG.

It's strange how hard the person has to look for information like this. What I see done differently everywhere, and what I've been told everywhere, makes this job confusing. I've been told if it's leaking it needs new valve guides. I've been told to only use the O-rings. I've been told to use the O-rings and an umbrella seal but only on the intake side because the exhaust heat will destroy the umbrella seal. I've been told that if you use both seals, it won't get enough oil to lubricate the valve stem. I've also been told to just using the umbrella. I've been told to get Viton seals, did I heard pros and cons for different reasons. ......ah crap, ill just buy a new engine and be done with it. 😁 Thanks for the video 👍

Part of why it's called an art. If you were a real hot rodder you'd know you can only drink certain brands of beer when doing the job and only certain kinds of BBQ chicken for lunch! for real though i depends on the engine and context and use case. in the case of my astro van aside from factory "updates" and a hotrod radiator it's all stock. if the guides are worn i'm sure new seals will help so far but, it well enough before, it's preventative maint for a vehicle from 2001, rubber doesn't last forever.

Cool idea bud. Some helpful tips... maybe, valve spring compressor tool 2.0 don't cut the end off the wrench just bend it. Tip 2 use a length of old spark plug wire in the spark plug hole push it in till it stops coiling oh make sure the piston is at TDC compression. Way faster and safer and no need for an air compressor 😊 but I like what you did here great video

Can you put each cylinder to tdc and use the piston to hold the valves up?

quarter inch or three eights nylon cord works also. just pack it into your cylinder head and leave some sticking out to pull when finished

I might be underthinking it.... but why did you fight with the o-ring AFTER putting the spring back in place? I don't see anything that would prevent you from putting that o-ring where it needs to be in the first place and then setting the spring on top of it and compressing/installing keepers. Something i'm missing ?

May be a dumb question to some but why dont u put the O Ring on before u drop the Spring back on ?

You can take a compression tester tool and fit an air compressor to the quick connect nipple and pressurize the cylinder with air. That’s what he did basically.

That's what the air hose to spark plug adapter is for. You put compressed air into the cylinder you are working on, and the air keeps the valve closed while you do your work.

recenty got changed by liana's valve seal by holding valve with rope method....in air pressure scene you need to hold engine permanently to void engine turning as there will be cinstant air pressure on piston while in rope method you will be more easy with execution ... you must find a video with rope method on you tube ... it is easy

Usually the umbrella seals are for the exhaust- the rubber with the clamp ring are for intakes- hope you didn’t just get them swapped.

Will this work with a 2013 hyundai sonata? They replaced the motor at 153k and its at 171k and the valve guide seals are bad. Smokes like a bitch on almost every start

Put a drill on the valve. Spin it a few times to clean up the valve seat. Not much, just enough to get the job done.

Bc if it does have a leak then it would drop the valves. Would also have to turn engine over to build pressure again. With the compressor set up, he should hold a constant pressure regardless if it was leaking or not
