Changing the Map of Europe Back to 1914

What did Europe look like on the verge of World War I? This video redraws the map of Europe from 2014 to 1914 while explaining the differences.
ERRATA
• Vatican City was established in 1929 and should not appear on the final 1914 map.
• The central parts of the 1914 German border with Russia are slightly too advanced.
• Germany in 1914 should also include a very small part of present-day eastern Czechia (the so-called 'Hultschiner Ländchen').
• Spanish Morocco is shown as slighly too large.
• The Dutch province of Flevoland didn't yet exist in 1914, as it was still under water.
• The Franco-Italian border is very slightly off, as Italy in 1914 should include some minor areas of France.

Well, Yeah but to Poland, those were simply rebels trying to deflect from the Commonwealth, even further from the direct part of the Polish Crown. It is right that Commonwealth didn't really look at the Ukrainians as a nation, but I wouldn't call protecting Your (because at the time those were Polish) borders a partition. This is one of the biggest problems in Polish-Ukrainian relations alongside with the characters of Ukrainian heroes such as Khmelnitsky, Bandera, that for polish are traitors and murderers and polish heroes like Yarema Vyshnevetsky who is a traitor and genocide-maker for Ukraine. Only at the very end of Polish and Lithuanian independence, there were ideas of creating the Commonwealth of three nations that would include Ukraine as a separate state on the same rights as Poland and Lithuania. An idea that came to minds of our dumb, rotten nobility and administrators far too late.

  • @Agron_ATA

Nontheless You cannot really say that Polish took part in getting rid of the country that was literally a rebel state deflected from Poland.

  • @Agron_ATA

Another ironic thing is the fact that Khmelnitsky was a Catholic Pole that became a traitor seeking revenge on Polish government and Ukrainian hero, while his main enemy, Vyshnevetsky was an Orthodox Ruthenian, who changed religion and begun slaughtering his own kin, which during the rebellion was thought to be great and became a Polish hero (His son was even a king!). I understand Your point though and feel terrible for the fact that my countrymen still tend to say that Ukraine is only "fake country" with no history, while this was one of the reasons why the Commonwealth - which same people say was so great and all-powerful - has fallen.

The Netherlands had a border change, after ww2 they got a hill, Wylerberg, about 1 square kilometer. It was mostly strategic, because if "the Nethelands" controlled that, they could scout abnormous distanses. The Netherlands also temporarily, such did Belgium, many german bordertowns, but they were later given back (except Wylerberg).

Iran also had some redrawings of borders, with Russia and UK. But I don't know if some of these happened after 1914. But Iran did change it's borders in the Iraqi-Iranian war (first gulf war), but only temporalily. The border was set back after a shorter time. Iran also holds some islands in the persian Gulf, which a couple of minor states in UAE say belongs to them. Also, Bahrain was, sorta, part of Iran, but I can't remember if the british freed them from Iran or Qatar from UK in 1916. But they gt freed around the same time.

People born in the old empires, like Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Russian Empire, etc. Kinda crazy to think about, and almost a bit sad that soon there will be none left who were born then.

I live in germany and always went to Austria for skiing, nothing more. I always thought of Austria this small german speaking country right next to Germany, and that‘s it. When I found out that Austria was once one of, if not the strongest force on the European continent, i was mindblown. I now look at Austria on a map and think „wow, that such a small country was once so powerful is unimaginable, but true“, it really fascinates me.

History has a lot of these "the fuck is this map" moments - Medieval Europe was especially messy. Major weird ones : England used to own chunks of modern days Frances coast. Muscovy (Russia before it became Russia) was heckin' TINY for ages then kinda exploded in all directions in the space of a few decades until they became the monsters you see here. Spain was in cut in two, and the east side of it (known as Aragon) owned most of Southern Italy... sorta. And don't even get me started on the fucking holy Roman Empire. Oh and like 'Turkey' (the Ottoman Empire) was just massive for the longest time, as was the ex-Byzatium Empire, which was still around 600 years ago. Yeah - what was basically the Roman empire was still around 600 years ago, KINDA WIERD. Also, there was like dozens of entire country's most people have never heard of that existed. Honestly for anyone intrested in this kind of thing - watch a timelapse of Europe from 0AD to today and it's pretty mind-blowing, it's increadible how long it takes until anything is even remotely reccognisable.

BTW. 1. Wylerberg, a hill about 1 sqk, was part of Germany (prussia) until 1945. 2. The Hlučín region in Czechia, 316.9 square kilometres (122.4 sq mi), was part of Germany (Prussia) until the trety of Versailles, 1919 (effective 1920). 3. The Vatican state, although not large, was at this point part of Italy. 4. Think your borders got broken, a bit, some places. 4a:- such as, I belive you added some extra parts of Elsaß-Lothringen/Alsace-Lorraine, maybe Meuthe-Moselle. But clearly not all of Lorraine, which is a VERY common mistake on those maps. 4b:- You forgot adding Kanalthal/canal valley/Val canale. It was part of Carinthia (A-H), located where the countries of Slovenia, Austria and Italy meet today. 4c:-You forgot adding the Italian-French border, that changed in 1947 (think it was something about 2 000 sqk, but couldn't find the exact number right now. But I have found it before* 4d:-Bulgaria got a small portion of land, at Svilengrad (at the turkish border) after ww1 (either the trety of Neilly-sur-seine, or in the traty of Lausanne). 4e:-Sazan/Saseno, the only major island Albania has today. It's a bit complicated, it was officially part of Greece until 1913/1920. Then it was officially part of Albania from 1913-1920. And it was officially (by some countries), and de facto part pf Italy from 1913/1914/1920-1947. So a bit hard, and it is only 6 sqk. 4f:-Moldova-Romania's border does not match up to the 1914 border. Stalin took some islands from Romania in 1940, which Romania never got back. 4g:-Hungary ceded three villages to Slovakia after WW2. Not a big change, but a change. Then I have three changes, which I see no way you shouldn't have mentioned, but still changes. 1, Spain and France have an island which they are letting the other have for 6 months, before they get it back and then it continues. Pretty interesting story. 2, Some countries do give each others some lands sometimes, often due to river changing patterns. As example Norway-Russia's borders (which we have an agreement to change every 10 or 15 years, and noone do get bigger or smaller), the borders of Poland and Slovakia and Belarus (but they do not matter on this map, of course. Since eastern Poland is part of Russia and southern Poland is in Austria-Hungary. The newest border change just happened, between Belgium and "The Netherlands". First ever, I believe. Basicly, a river changed pattern, so "The Netherlands" got two small penisnulas while Belgium got one big (and "The Netherlands" got most out of it. But all in all, a good video. Only missed minimal changes, the biggest only being around "a municipality".

Thanks! I've consciously omitted changes that would be too small to be visible (such as Wylerberg, although maybe the French-Italian change would have been). I'm not familiar with your 4b and 4d points. Would you feel like enlightening me about them?

  • @sanderskovly7641

    @sanderskovly7641

Well, 4b is pretty simple, but there's not good information in english. But you could either search up Val Canale/Kanalthal on wikipedia, if you speak another language than english. Or you could search up Tarvisio (the biggest village/town in the valley). In short, Austria lost some land after ww1. Today Italy controlls "Trentino alto Adige", which prior was a part of Tyrol in Austria, and Trieste and sum land around it where Italy meets Slovania and the sea. But Italy also controlls another separated, small area, which belonged to Austria, more specifix Carinthia. If you see at this video, stop it at 0:52 (not 53!). kzread.info/dash/bejne/hoxms5t8Y9Paeso.html Then you see two light green areas, which borders "the italian peninsula". The large are, trentino alto adige (Süd Tirol and Trentino), which the smaller part, northeast on it, is "Canal Valley", here called Tarvisio (it's largest town). 4d, I have never quite understood (or cared), why was transfered to Bulgaria. The Neuilly-sur-seine treaty was considered too harsh by the entente, so they wanted to give a symbolic area to Bulgaria. But here you have a link to read about it, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Neuilly-sur-Seine But, quite annoying, the english version uses like the only version where you can't see the area. So I recommend you to search "Neuilly-sur-seine treaty" and go to images to see (it is clearly marked with another colour, between Edirne and Svilengrad).
