Changing the Map of Europe Back to 1933

What did Europe look like before the Second World War? This video redraws the map of Europe from 2016 to 1933 while explaining what’s happened.
1933 is only 83 years back in time, but still an entire world away. This is the year of the interwar period when the Nazis took power in Germany, leading to enormous consequences for Europe, that forever altered the political, cultural and geographical landscape of the continent.
ERRATA
• The small island of Lagosta, off the Adriatic coast, is marked as part of 1933 Yugoslavia. It was in fact part of Italy.
• The eastern part of present-day Moldova (the Transnistria region) is merged into 1933 Romania. It should instead be separated and merged with the Soviet Union.
• In northern present-day Morocco, the Tangier International Zone is missing from the 1933 map.
• Spanish Morocco is shown as slighly too large.
• The Dutch province of Flevoland didn't yet exist in 1933, as it was still under water.
• The Franco-Italian border is very slightly off, as Italy in 1914 should include some minor areas of France.

Does anyone think Poland has the most insane border change in history? Stalin literally decided to "move" the entire country a few hundred miles west, not sure if anything else like that ever happened.

Michael Henman There is a logical reason for it. The eastern part of Poland was inhabited by Belarusans and Ukrainians so after the war Stalin gave these regions to the Belarusan and Ukrainian SSR. In exchange he gave Poland Pomerania, Silesia and parts of Eastern Prussia.

  • @sebastianw9749

Michael Henman Eastern Poland was the "poor" ans underdeveloped part of Poland in which Belarussians and Ukranians where the majority of the Population (except for in Vilnius which had 98% Polish population and Lviv which had around 60% Polish population) and the new Polish lands being Masuria, Pomeria and Silesia where part of the Duchy of Poland in the 10th-11th century. There still are areas where Poles make up up to 80% of the population, mainly in Belarus and Lithuania around their borders, and also there are 900,000 Poles or people of Polish descent in Belarus.

2:13 - Slight mistake. Moldova today includes a little sliver of land sandwiched between the River Dniester and its eastern border - Transnistria, which is actually an unrecognized breakaway state, but anyway. Back in 1933, Moldova's (Romania's) border was set at the River Dniester, with Transnistria being part of the Soviet Union. Seeing how narrow the country is, it probably wouldn't even show up on this map, but I just thought I'd point it out.

The thing is, he was a grand duke. A duke has less power and Authority than a King, so he had to become a king. Poland was a KIngdom, so he claimed the title of the king of Poland. He was the King of Poland and Ruled Poland, he had his claim on the Lithuanian throne, but he put his brother there to govern Lithuania. By becoming the King of Poland, he had more authority as he was a king. Because the Only Kingdom in the Personal Union was Poland, Poland was ruling making any other duchy in this sort of united nation. Back then they had a hierarchy, and a King is higher than a duke or a grand duke. If Lithuania was a 'Petty Kingdom' Then Lithuania would be almost at the same level as a normal KIngdom when it comes to the hierarchy in the medieval times. Besides that, if Poland was an Empire and had an emperor, then the title of the Emperor allows to give the titles of KIngs, simply put: Titles did the work, becouse it was a Polish title, Poland had more to say.

How exactly? The Balkans are split with the treaty of Berlin still in effect. Ripe and ready for plunder just as the west wanted them. Bulgaria once the strongest of all is still striped from territories that would have more than doubled it's size today. The Romans are long gone but Bulgaria and Serbia still existed. In Bulgaria's case the goal was to repurpose the assets of a fallen empire create states some with historical identity based on pure fiction then milk them off one by one with the original state they belonged to lacking the strength to intervene. Like a parent who's hands are tied while some adult beats their child in front of their very own eyes. No i don't think they look better.

I think it is hard for someone born in this age and in a country whose borders have not changed significantly by conflict and war to imagine this. People tend to live in the moment and take things for granted and rather static. This kind of change happened a long time ago from out retrospective, they think. But in fact, the world is still changing, and thanks to the Internet in ways that transcend both geographical and political lines. Although, the changes are subtle.

Hungary is too small, Bulgaria too, Yugoslavia is better split up, part of Germany and France should be with the Benelux, no united Ireland, Danzig as a free city, Polish under German control, the middle east and Magreb are fucked up. First of all you can infinitely use this argument until Europe has the same borders it did 1000 years ago, plus imagine the political mess and the violence that would result if something like that were to happen. Look what happened during the Yugoslav wars, that would happen again and no one wants that.

Freek Mulder Nah mate, if you knew the history behind Kosovo you'd agree with me. Kosovo used to be filled with Serbs in the 19th century but mysteriously the Serbian population started to decline as the Albanian population increased. This accelerated in ww2 when genocide was commonplace so the Albanians could continue doing as they wished since Nazi Germany gave them Kosovo and supported the genocide of Serbs. Only in 1998 did it become apparent after the Yugoslav wars that something had gone seriously wrong as Kosovo was now full of Albanians and the Serbs were in danger of being exterminated. Then came the KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) who was a recognised terrorist organisation who tried to kill as many Serbs as possible, if you google a picture of the leader he is holding the severed heads of Serbs. Serbia wasn't very happy with this and sent in forces to stop them which was met with fights and the Albanians decided to take the piss and call for help saying they were being ethnically cleansed by Serbs. In comes NATO, bombs the shit out of Belgrade after already being devastated by the wars in early 1990s. Kosovo doesn't deserve to be an independent state because it is built ok the skulls of millions of serbs and if we let it go we lose our historical sites, lots of land, a part of the country we could use for our economy and our Serbs living there. We lose everything the Albanians get it all when they don't deserve it.

There are a ton of miniscule changes thoe. Holland got the Wylerberg hill from Germany after WW2 (being 1 sqk). And Hungary had to give 3 villages to Slovakia/Czechoslovakia in 1947. But 2 things I'm gonna call you out on. 1, you should have adjusted the italian-french border, changed in 1947 (giving 2000~ sq km to France). 2, You showed that Italy got Cres, just south of the Istria peninsula. They did not, only for 2 years during WW2 if I remember correctly. Italy got Istria, Fiume/Rjika, Zara/Zadar and the island of Lastovo at Versailles. Not Cres.

I've consciously omitted very minor changes for the sake of simplicity, such as the Wylerberg hill. The France-Italy swap is an honest mistake on my end, as I assumed the affected territory was smaller than it was, and thus chose to leave it out. Italy did get Cres in the Treaty of Rapallo in 1920. I'm honestly not too happy with the 1914 and 1933 videos; there are too many small mistakes in them. I'm hoping to make new versions at some point, where I can rectify such issues like those you pointed out in your comment.

@@AcademiaCervena 1. Yeah, I think I've talked to you before (maybe the 1914 episode. I'm a subscriber, but I haven't watched your older videos systematic yet.) So, sorry for being a nettroll, lol. Still liked the episode thoe (didn't know Jordan has changed it border). 2. May I get a source on Italy de facto getting the Cres island (not meant to be rude, just interested if I remember a large mistake in my head).

I was searching for «Italy before WW2» maps. Darn, I didn't know. You were right! I feel so stupid now...., lol
