I have a 1958 Massey Ferguson 35 and was going through changing the hydraulic oil and came across the situation of not being able to find the filter inside the gearbox. I was worried that it was serviced and someone forgot to put in a new filter. I was struggling looking through the hole where the PTO selector switch plate is... Thank you for your video, it eased my mind.

This tractor is to old to have a filter on the hydraulic pump. The filter came later, in 1962.

Thanks - really helpful. I had to do the PTO seal on our 1959 4Cyl the other day so I dropped the level of the oil by one bucket. It wasn't milky, but the oil was mid brown in colour. When I went to put the oil back in there was quite a lot of silt in the bottom of the bucket so I'm thinking it wants the oil changing, especially as there is no filter (pre 1962). I know that the previous owner had the engine rebuilt, but never did anything to the gearbox, and the previous owner had the tractor since 1970ish, so goodness only knows when it was last changed. I have new boots for the gear selectors, but did you find any O-ring or gasket around the filler cap? It looks like there maybe should be one, but there is nothing present on mine. perhaps I should add one...?
