To get the correct fluid level you have to fill the 3 liters, then start the engine, and at idle you remove the small screw and let go the excess / add fluid until it stops dripping. Put back the small screw, stop the engine, and you're set. Trying to get the correct level with the engine off or by measuring the liters is incorrect. This has to be done like the wet DSG transmissions, because of the pump that sucks part of the fluid in the system when the engine is on. Good video and info btw.

Thank you! By the way, I decided to negotiate with my BMW dealer and extend my CPO warranty for 2 years. There are some concerns with parts of the i8 having issues resulting in up to $18k to repair. I advise checking out what your dealer has to offer and see if you can have them take a couple thousand off.

Geeze Pat, if I knew ownership and maintenance of an I8 was so simple, I would have bought one. 😉 This upload was fascinating in that who would have thought that you would obtain information on this subject from those that own a Mini Cooper. Thanks Peter! The mid-engine and associated parts are related to the Mini Cooper, only built to perform better. Kind of like how Corvette parts are sometimes beefy Camaro parts. It's just kind of nuts how I have to go digging for information from other cars to learn how to work on this one, sometimes. I think the C8 Corvette is going to have it's own quirks as well and those that tackle the DIY jobs will be trend setters, for sure!

Instead of the Febi or BMW fluid I use Amsoil Signature series ATF. Check it out next time it's a better fluid and still compatible.

Lifetime transmission fluid is a disastrous concept. When I first changed the fluid in the E53 X5 I used to own it was black, at 135,000km. New fluid dramatically improved transmission performance.

I wonder how much you could pump out of the top port and save alot of work with that stiffening plate. Even if you only are getting 2 qts or so, your 10k mi idea might work and save alot of time

The stretch bolts ate not designed to be reused. You got away this time not breaking any of them but if reuse them again you might need to extract some of them.

@@PatsGarageOnline I realized how knowledgeable you are so my comments were not much needed. If I ever need to reuse stretch bolts I usually torque them to the spec but then rotate them additionally only 1/3 of the specified angle. (That is not my approach for head bolts though.)

A couple of questions. Does the fluid fill hole go all the way to the bottom? Could you suck out the fluid and then refill it? Also, why not cut a hole in the stiffening plate where the drain is at?

Unfortunately, there are components getting in the way between the fill hole and the bottom of the pan. I thought about putting a hole in the stiffening plate but also thought it might affect the stiffening adversely or lead to stress cracks so I decided against it.

Hi Pat, I need to change the oil in the differential of my Mini Countryman SE. The catalog says it needs 1,5L of BMW 83 22 2 295 532 Hypoid Axle Oil G1 75W-85. What do you think about using Febi Bilstein 48785 instead?

Definitely read the technical spec sheets on these before you swap. It should specify if it's compatible. I sadly don't have any time to research it right now.

I just looked it up. Aisin makes the transmission in your vehicle. The model numbers are GA6F21AW for the 6 speed and the GA8F22AW for the 8 speed. I don't know what the procedure is for your exact . model, however

Hello, I'm interested in topping up my transmission. I have an issue at redline if I pushed into redline the Trans shifts to next gear and then back down then into the next gear. Sometimes it does that 3 times. Heard that this issue happens on the mini with low fluids. Can I top it up from that top fill hole?

@@thomasbeshaw855 you'd have to remove the small screw inside the drain plug under the transmission. This gives the overflow pipe the ability to allow fluid to drain at the correct level inside the transmission. But you'll want to drive the car or allow the car to idle until transmission is between 35 and 45 degrees Centigrade. With the engine started, operate the foot brake and operate the transmission selector, choosing between P and D a couple times, but allow it to be in P and D for longer than 2 seconds each time. Check to see if oil escapes. If not, add more oil to top hole until it escapes the overflow pipe port under the transmission.

@@PatsGarageOnline im curios about another question. My car now needs a HV battery and something called a battery safety module. BMW is replacing it all under warranty. According to the dealer they are replacing each individual cell. I was trying to determine online if ill get the cells in the newer lci 11.6Kwh. Or if they still make 7.1Kwh. Online its hard to tell i see different part numbers for 2019 and newer labeled as 24AH. Vs the 2016 called 20AH cells.

@@thomasbeshaw855 they will likely install the same capacity battery as your car had. There is no retrofit guide to put the newer modules in an older car.

It's supposed to be lubed for life, but I did the partial change to help extend the transmission life.
