    "Half a loaf is better than no bread." A plug-in hybrid with over 100 km of range is going to spend most of its time without starting the booster engine. It's a step towards an EV. Personally I'd much rather drive a plug-in hybrid than a full EV with EV range limitations as they are and limited recharging options away from home. I think this is the practical application of battery power at the moment.

    HURRAY!! Finally someone with a BRAIN in his head. PHEV pickups are PRECISELY what the world needs, especially in North America, particular in remote regions and during winter. Are you listening Ford and GM??? We don't want your [insert expletive] BEV pickups. So turn them into a PHEV machines with decent city all-EV mileage, and watch your sales eclipse that PS CT. I think for utes and 4wds an erev or phev with a 100-120km range is a good way to start electrification at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, battery energy density and cost as well as charging infrastructure are just not there yet for larger vehicles with ATR tyres especially if they are towing. Looking forward to seeing BYD's Bao 5 and its ute equivalent in Australia.

    Two points. First, if it is an EREV (or EVER) so you usually can't combine the power output. Second, the highway range can be realistic, as that range is from the combustion engine and combustion engines produce best range on the highway.

    I have a Mitsubishi outlander Phev, it's brilliant, I regularly get 90 km of a charge, which I do from my solar/power wall, average 1.5l/100, The main disincentive for a EV is the fact that your range will drop off dramatically if you hit a strong headwind or go up hill,

    I always enjoy your videos Sam but it has become fairly apparent that Chinese prices mean very little in the rest of the World. If any vehicle makes it outside of China, the Chinese understandably try to claw back some margin and thenTaxes, etc increase the price. Especially in Europe and very much in the UK.

    I think it is great you are expanding your perspective to consider other types of vehicles than BEVs ; thought you've touched on hydrogen. One thing that is possible but rarely touched on is a hybrid can use 100% or part ethanol if properly designed or bio diesel which are considered renewable. Brazil has vehicles in use that use very little fossil fuel.

    When analyzing the new plug-in hybrid system that the Hunter - which is based on the Fiat Titano - has received, the big curiosity is that the combustion engine part of the drive is not a petrol engine but a diesel engine. More precisely, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 190 horsepower, assisted by two electric motors - one on each axle. The electric motor on the rear axle is the one that provides all-wheel drive. The battery pack has a capacity of 31.2 kWh and offers an electric range of 180 km...probably CLTC.

    LDV will be having an all electric 'proper' ev pick up coming next year, I have seen pictures of one and it does look very good. I have a Ranger at the mo' plus an mg ev for my around town runabout, if I could have one vehicle instead of 2, it should make more economic sense. To replace my wildtrak they want over $70k NZ. I plug in my mg at home and it costs a pittance to run compared to my diesel, and of course there is no tailpipe emissions. We pick up the grandkids from day care in the mg for that reason.

    This is very good Idea but I think the design can be even more functional by emphasizing ruggedness and modification vs refinement, its to nice looking. IF type of platform could be More like the Toyota IMV O it would dominate the rural developing market as the electrify storage/distribution function and the ability to be charged by solar panels in the country is going to near the value of its use as a vehicle for transporting people a goods to market. It would sell like crazy in southeast Asia. middle east, central Asia , Africa and south America... Also if you can design these types of trucks to easily disassembled and package so then can be transportable via containers it would rapidly expand their market distribution.

  • @Jason-bu9sv
    @Jason-bu9sv3 ай бұрын

    Think of the rural developing world market its not affluent but it will pay for tools that will in time pay for themselves. The rural utility market will do things to your vehicle to make them more useful, they will want to take power direct from the drive train to power pumps, threshers, bailing machines and other equipment make that easy to do so. The rural utility market will haul and tow much more weight then you think possible so build extra rugged and tough frames, suspensions and torque connections. The Rural utility market does not care about air resistance they are moving slow on dirt roads through brush, mud and gravel so make the body panels tough with angles that resist impact damage and are easily removable cause those country folk are going to be taking and adding things to the vehicle.. Make the interior capable of withstand the elements direct like a jeep cause the doors might be removed to carry more cargo..

    Good stuff. Actually I can't find a single channel dedicated to PHEVs and HEVs. I guess they aren't interesting enough, but I'd be happy to see a world that has transitioned to 100% electrification of all kinds. If market share was 40% BEV, 20%PHEV and 40% HEV that would be a great intermediate point before we all follow Norway. And anything that kills diesel asap has to be a good thing, and PHEV in the meantime does exactly that.

    It's an EREV not a PHEV. All wheels, RWD or AWD, are driven by electric motors. The petrol engine charges the battery and that's all it does. It is a foregone conclusion that a pure EV version of this will appear in time. It will be built on the same production line as the EREV because while an EREV is an impure EV it is nonetheless architecturally an EV and not just another hybrid horror. The petrol range extender is only required for long trips - not great but better than a HEV or PHEV. For any pickup owner incapable of releasing their grip on the petrol security blanket this should more than suffice.

    Now make a 'compact' pickup hybrid version... like the old original Ford Ranger, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota. Like many others I was very annoyed about conspiracy to stop making and selling compacts back about 15 years ago. The new so-called Ford Ranger is just F150 in a different suit... and much higher price. Used original Rangers are now selling at half their original price... or more... even with high mileage because people want them. Hopefully the Chinese or maybe Japanese will wake up and realize there is still a huge demand for something other than these parking lot behemoths.

    Can you provide more details about the powertrain? Is this a parallel or serial PHEV, ie., are the wheels driven by a combination of ICE and electric power or are they driven by electric motors only where power comes from the battery only in all electric mode and from ICE powered generator plus battery power in hybrid mode. Both have their pros and cons. I prefer the serial approach (like the Chevy Volt) for its EV like driving characteristics but it is less efficient and more expensive than a parallel hybrid. However a serial hybrid could support electric only driving for 80-90% of the light duty use cases and still be capable of supporting the remaining high load, long range use cases and retain the premium EV like drive characteristics. Stellantis has announced a full size PHEV pickup that will be based around a serial hybrid drive train. GM has moved forward with its own PHEV pickup development to meet this challenge. Presumably also using a serial PHEV approach as they have extensive experience in this area with the Volt.

    @@miraphycs7377 1. Larger battery enables vehicles to use more efficient powertrain that keeps the engine work at optimal condition for longer period. A non-plugin hybrid must periodically start and stop the engine at low speed. During the starting phase it is very inefficient. PHEV can start the engine much less frequently. 2. You can compare Chinese standards because China is phasing out NEDC and switching to WLTC. For example, BYD's Song Plus DM-i PHEV has a NEDC range of 150km and a WLTC range of 116km - about 20% decrease. Therefore, if you see a Chinese vehicle with 150km NEDC range, it is almost certain that this has longer range than a vehicle with 100km WLTC range.

A 25 kW generator would be enough if frugal. Then why is electric drive pretty wimpy? Cost of electric horses is cheap, it’s a great marketing ploy. ** I get it’s Asia, not USA. For a truck, hybrid, I’d advise 50-60 kWh battery (about half of cybertruck 123 kWh) for electric only range to be useful, otherwise it’s ICE. PS. Don’t add the two "power" if it’s a generator - that’s dumb & dumber. Parallel hybrid? Gearbox? Physical drive?
