Derrick Smiley I would see if I could keep it running with starting fuild. If you can then you know it’s a fuel issue. If you can’t it’s a fire issue. Hope this helps. Have a good one. May sound silly but make sure it’s full of oil. If it’s a little low it can start then the safety will turn it off.

Good job. Tip I learned awhile back. Run aviation fuel in your equipment, especially generators that get put away and not used regularly. AVGAS is ethanol free and not prone to gumming up carbs. Also, AVGAS has a 5 year shelf life.

My surging fix on a 3500 watt champion. After new fuel, new filters, new carburetor and gaskets, governor adjustment and everything else you can find easily on the internet which may cure the very aggravating problem of engine surging, here was my fix. Get a welding tip cleaner at a cost of 2 to 5 bucks. Remove the carburetor you should have already replaced or cleaned sufficiently and take out the main jet (the one in the middle while looking at the float). Find the tip cleaner that just fits in the jet hole. Start filling out the hole moving the jet in circles to be as even as you can. When you have filed it just enough for the next size up tip cleaner, file with that one about 5 to 10 strokes straight in and out. You are done enlarging the jet hole. Clean the left over fillings out with carb cleaner and reinstall. This fixed my generator and it idles at the correct rpm/hz and handles a load such as a skill saw and small compressor easily with the proper rpm/hz.

It's all about Maintenance! Yup, about 7 months ago we had a nor'easter, loadsa wind an rain, took out power here an there and here!, I went to start up the powerhorse 7.2k and it was a 'no-go' damn I was, well not happy. Apparently in the move to N.E. somehow gas valve partly on and muffed her carb. I had a lot going getting re-located but still I shoulda checked it, had the gen since 2014 and never once had an issue. I do run a maint. check every month and a half to two months, got a calendar hanging up in the shop with dates to do a maint. run and a book I keep the hours in, that is good for the oil, air cleaner service plug and valve lash check. I always use a space heater as a load or a blowdryer, some sort of heat-producing item as I feel the more amps it draws the more it keeps up the residual magnetic field as compared to a 100 watt lamp and it is getting hard to even find those as everything is led. There is talk out there about bonded neutral and floating neutral, meaning that one side of the line in a 120 volt gen-set has one side of the line tied to the frame. then it is 'bonded' where-as if one side of the line is NOT tied to the frame it is a 'floating neutral. Or if the geny delivers 120/240 volts the neutral is the connection between the two windings which may or may not be bonded but which-ever, it has to be labeled on the gen, usually on the panel. I fixed up a cord, yeah the suicide cord to power the house, I had to make sure it was a 4 wire cord, 10 gage for 30 amps so it has a black, red, white and green. I did not give thought when i bot it about what kind of neutral I had, just that the dryer plug is 4 wire and the gen has a 4 wire twist lock. Now some people will say, "You using a suicide cord? u effing crazy? I sed, "let me think about that!" but when u really think about it, ur power goes out in a bad storm, u call the elec. co. who says, "right now ten hours" So u do the 1st right thing by shutting off the 'MAINS' you already know where you will have the gen and u thought enough to make a good shelter or got a canopy for it. then u plug-in at the dryer because there is no power anyway, and it is much safer than plugging into the gen with it running and walking back to the house in the dark with 240 volts swingin' live at the prongs! u got the wife to keep the kidz an pets in a room while you did this so one of the curtain crawlers or family pet did not become a krispee critter. good idea to make a big sign with gen. procedures for the dryer plug area. U don't want to juice a linesman and if they see a poster of how you do this, if it comes to that and maybe a padlock on electric panel, they will think more of you as you are thinking of them. I am NOT an electrician but always liked the volts and amps and having the brains to know this stuff is effing deadly and that it has a ZERO tolerance for ignorance.

I do not know if people don't read instruction manual or if it is in there to drain carb after engine cools with gas valve off. but I think they just flip that nice red switch, the engine shuts down and they think it's all good, not considering this is a gravity-fed system and gas will leave a nice varnish to muff up her carb. These 3500/4000 are all over the place! anyway I heard that having load connected as engine slows down due to running out of fuel is bad for the generator and can cause loss of residual field, so needed to get the generator to produce power. Every few months start her up ! and plug in a blowdryer! doing this ensures gen-set will be ready when U, yes you, need it, and if the ol' gal is not putting out, you found out, hopefully b4 you need her. check brushes after you ran her for a few days str8 and do not forget valve lash adjustments.

I stepped away for a moment, heard a lovely purring coming from across the room!! If I may ask, changing the oil, cleaning the carb, cleaning the ignition... do you ever need to take apart and clean the engine? Also, can you use that 'flexoid" material that you cut, for any and all gaskets? I replaced the carb seals with it and it seems to have done a good job. Still, just trying to diagnose the rough idle... and when you switch it out of neutral, every few second, or I guess like every second, you see the governor arm open throttle and give a rev. Is this normal? Busy fixing an old generator for my parents at the moment. Have already cleaned the carb out once. Every tiny little hole was clogged. The oil was a black sludge. Currently using engine cleaner fuel stabilizer in the petrol. Was thinking of using injection system cleaner but also wondering if I can't use carb cleaner spray in the spark plug ignition chamber 🤔... many thanks for any input. Can't seem to find the right information... Edit: the "sludge" was drained as best I could, just topped up then with a couple bottles of fresh oil..

Thanks for watching and commenting. First thing to do is drain all the dirty gas and oil out. Then put a new inline fuel filter to stop the trash. If you cleaned the carb and run it with out a new filter the trash is right back in the carb. You might could find a new carb on eBay to fit it pretty cheap. Just a thought. Always put. New fuel filter. Cheap insurance.

@@GerraldFarms thanks for the response! I had put in an inline fuel filter but was worried it was limiting the flow. One video suggested soaking the intake filter with oil and wringing it as dry as possible? This seemed like a bad idea... when I took the air filter off, the top of it is slightly soaked in fuel - is this normal? I used a solvent on the sponge and let it air dry, clean... It's like 42°F and dark-out but am going to see as well if I maybe didn't over-tighten a set screw perhaps? Thanks for the response! Keep well, great vid 👍

The spring is on and in good shape. It runs fairly smooth at half throttle until you put a load on it but full throttle it throttles with no load.

Good video overall except for the part where you speed up the most important part, where & how exactly the plug jet comes out, 👍

Martin Berlanga thanks for watching. The first thing I would check if it stopped running is the oil level. It has a low oil shut off. That low oil shut off will get you . It has got me before. I was cleaning the carb several times then my son walked up talking and checked the oil it was just a little low. Added just a little run like a new one. If this doesn’t help give me some more details on what it done when it stopped-how long it set between uses- how old is the gas. Have a good one
