Chalk Painted Kitchen Cabinets 2 Year Update | Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

I painted my kitchen cabinets two years ago. This is an update on what they look like, how they've held up and how I keep them clean.
I painted them with Annie Sloan chalk paint in pure white (which is a mistake I explain. If you plan to use Annie Sloan on your cabinets, do not use Pure White alone as it is very translucent. Annie Sloan's Original White is an ideal choice and what I would use now.) I sealed them with Annie Sloan Floor Lacquer.
*Note: I understand the Magic Eraser is abrasive, and only use it for deep cleans.

Looks beautiful! a little tip I pass along to anyone using whit chalk paint. First do two coats of bin shellac base primer, it fills in the wood grain and then you dont have to do as many coats of chalk paint to get good coverage. Also gives what ever you put on top of it better adhesion. Saves you time and money.

I painted my kitchen cabinets 2 years ago also and I used a kilz primer and GF milk paint. They look beautiful and still brand new, but the white is slightly yellowed. No chips etc. I am now painting my bedroom furniture and discovered BIN and I am in love. This stuff is the truth!

100% agreed. Any paint applied to pre-finished/stained wood will need it (cabinets, doors, trim). I used Zinsser BIN shellack... scuff the surface to break the sheen and two coats primer, then light sand before applying two top coats of your paint. BIN goes on super thin, but covers amazing and dries in 15 minutes, so paint fast to keep a wet edge! Not cheap at ~$75 a gallon, but worth every penny. I too also put a clear protector coat on mine, two coats of satin to hopefully make the surface scratch resistant, especially in areas like the handles that get way more abuse.

I used your method. I cleaned my cabinets with vinegar and warm water n little dish soap. 2 coats chalk white paint...my cabinets were cream. Drys fast so 2 coats polyurethane followed shortly. In 2 sessions of painting over 2 days we were finished. PS i did not use Anne Sloan. Not necessary. Used semi gloss water based paint and ordered chalk paint calcium carbonate additive from Amazon. Combined tgec2 following directions....you save so much. Cabinets are awesome.

This guy has been a painter for decades and is from the old school and only recommends hi gloss, semi-gloss or satin enamel paint. My sister told me that chalk paint is horrible as it chips off like crazy. I LOVE the idea of using a flooring top coat to protect the finish. I hate it and have wanted to paint them from the beginning. I have used regular paint to paint a bathroom cabinet in the past, and it was a LOT of work, so it's great to know the chalk paint is holding up so well. They look beautiful! Great video. Thanks for updating us. What we did with our dark oak cabinets was to degrease with tsp and rinse rinse rinse it off and then sand so you don’t drive the grease into the wood. Sand until you think your done and then sand some more. Two coats of primer allowing a full day between coats to dry. Then two coats of an enamel top coat paint allowing at-least 2 or 3 days to dry between coats. Then let cure couple weeks before putting on hardware and installing. Lots of work but you won’t regret it. We just posted on our channel a 2 and half yr update video on our painting results.

For kitchen cabinets I first scrub all exposed surfaces with TSP and a handled brush (such as for hand washing dishes), and rinse thoroughly. When cooking grim is removed and everything is well rinsed I check for dents and dings that need to be addressed. Paintable wood fillet or auto bondo always works well for me. If handles and knobs are being replaced and the placement is different fill those holes as necessary. Sand, wipe away dust and paint. Only time I sand is when filler or bondo is utilized. I topcoat with water-based satin or matte polycrylic. It's fast-drying so 2 to 3 coats in one day is doable if I start early. I usually apply a total of 4 to 5 coats for cabinets. Same with furniture and bathroom vanities. Another paint that works well for me is both chalk and clay based. D.I.Y. Paint is very thick and requires fewer coats. Two coats except on the most frequently utilized areas. I apply 3 coats to all drawer fronts and the most frequently utilized doors = under the sink, those covering drinking cups/glasses, dishes, etc. Soap & water clean-up, no fumes, saturated color and awesome colors. The D.I.Y. paint color White Swan is stunning on cabinets, I am using it on all my bathroom vanities. They also offer Tarnished Pearl and Beadboard but White Swan remains a lovely white regardless of the lighting or the age of the finish.

Stacey Boling I’m so glad! The floor lacquer was such a great choice for me because I don’t want to go back and Wax once a year. Good luck on your chalk paint adventures!

I've been painting distressed furniture for years but never used chalk paint. I always use "eggshell" latex acrylic and it's tough as nails, washes well, and really needs no protective coat. Before painting, I use candle wax on the edges I want distressed & that cuts way down on the sanding.

Great video on painting cabinets, just want to comment on the magic eraser...It was brought to my attention that they are somewhat like a micro sandpaper, that may be why the edges are worn away. I would not recommend them to clean a chalk painted project unless you want the gradual worn look. Thanks for sharing your process

Decent job if you don't mind the dark showing through and want a more rustic look. If you want a solid finish that will dry tough and not show through, you'll need to use an acrylic or a waterborne alkyd paint. With those, no lacquer required is required but you will need to clean, sand and prime first. These finishes are much more durable though.

Thank you for the update, I have been waiting and watching for one of these videos about chalk paint. I really appreciate it. I also have seen videos where they sand before using chalk paint. If you are going to do all the same things you would do with regular paint, why use chalk paint huh? I agree with you. I've used chalk paint on the cheapest pieces, without sanding, and they turned out better than when I used enamel with all the prep. I think the wax is okay if the piece you are covering is not one that is constantly used, such as kitchen cabinets or like your make up vanity. Excellent video!

For any pure white paint (and some blues), add 1-2 drops of black tint to get rid of the translucent effect and improve coverage. Ceiling paint does not require this step. Thanks for sharing the update on your project!

Thanks for sharing this, especially your suggestion of not using the wax. I do have a suggestion for you. Using the magic eraser is very abrasive. That’s why the paint has the wood is showing through. I would switch to a sponge or cloth with a mild soap like Murphy’s Oil Soap to keep from scratching through the finish.

The magic eraser is like a mild sandpaper. I use the sanitary wipes for daily cleaning and save the magic eraser for stubborn areas. The magic eraser does turn the color of our paint when I use them on the walls. They even took sharpie off a wood cabinet door 3 years after my son decided to “decorate “ with red and green sharpies. They are amazing but too abrasive for regular use on a painted surface.

Your kitchen looks lovely! I am desperate to paint mine and plan on taking a few days off soon to do it. I was planning on using a paint sprayer ....... will the chalk paint work in a sprayer? I am going to do the 50/50 mix like you suggested but I thought the sprayer would save me tons of time and avoid brush marks that would make me crazy lol ....
