Chainsaw Garden Harvest | Can We Beat the Heat?

Welcome back to "That 1870s Homestead"! I'm Rachel, and today I’m tackling my morning chores early to beat the summer heat. With temperatures soaring into the mid-90s, I'm trying to get all my garden tasks done by 10:30 AM. Join me as I spray on some bug repellent and head out to pick strawberries and blueberries, water the garden, and tend to our adorable baby chickens. We've recently mixed our baby meat chickens with the laying hens, and it's going surprisingly well-they’re all getting along great!
I’m also dealing with the heat by planning to move the meat chickens into their own tractor once they’ve fully feathered. In the garden, I'm pulling out the broccoli plants and saving the greens for canning, which has become a staple in our new eating routine. I’ll share my tips on how to make the most of your garden produce, including how to use the often-overlooked broccoli leaves.
As I move from chore to chore, I'll talk about managing the farm stand, balancing all these tasks, and ensuring that our farm operates smoothly-even during a heatwave. I’ll show you some of the beautiful blooms in our garden, from bachelor's buttons to delphiniums, and share a few tricks on growing and pollinating peppers. It’s a busy but rewarding morning here at the homestead, and I’m excited to bring you along for the journey!

My big suggestion is to install a normal water faucet on a 4x4 post at the garden door. Feed the line from the house, with the same hose and leave it ON. I recommend using steel jacketed water hoses to connect to the faucet. It’s light and durable. Advantage: You can connect things and turn them on at the garden faucet. And you can daisy chain other remote faucets using splits. Disadvantage: You have an above ground hose you’ll have to move to mow around. But you could bury it. You essentially have the same thing with a ball cock shut off valve at the end of the hose. But with the faucet, it’ll be a normal faucet conveniently at ~ 3’ off the ground. I’ve done that. It’s nice having a faucet on me deck and in remote areas.

Instead of closing the farm stand when it’s hot.. u can just put fresh produce for anyone who is stopping by to buy.. instead of having it completely empty
